  • An empirical Bayes estimator of the probability of discovering a new species is proposed when some prior information is available on the number f species. The new estimator is shown via simulations to have only a moderate bias and a smaller RMSE than Good's estimator when the species population follows a truncated geometric distribution.

  • Recently, Ryu et al. proposed a multiple target DOA tracking algorithm, which has good features that it has no data association problem and simple structure. But its performance is seriously degraded in the low signal-to-noise ratio. In this paper, a measurement fusion method is presented based on ML(Maximum Likelihood), and the new DOA tracking algorithm is proposed by incorporating the presented fusion method into Ryu's algorithm. The proposed algorithm has a better tracking performance than that of Ryu's algorithm, and it sustains the good features of Ryu's algorithm.

  • In this paper, a set of new complementary quadriphase sequences based on Jacket matrix is proposed. It is with a good zero cross correlation zone and efficiently eliminates the inter-user interferences for CDMA systems. Unlike the conventional complementary sequence designs, the proposed sequences can be easily extended to large odd and even sizes by using a fast linear transform for multi-user communication systems. The computer simulation shows that the proposed sequences have better performance than conventional multi-user spreading CDMA systems using ZCZ sequence.

  • Images are unavoidably contaminated with different types of noise during the processes of image acquisition and transmission. The main forms of noise are impulse noise (is also called salt and pepper noise) and Gaussian noise. In this paper, an effective method of removing mixed noise from images is proposed. In general, different types of denoising methods are designed for different types of noise; for example, the median filter displays good performance in removing impulse noise, and the wavelet denoising algorithm displays good performance in removing Gaussian noise. However, images are affected by more than one type of noise in many cases. To reduce both impulse noise and Gaussian noise, this paper proposes a denoising method that combines adaptive median filtering (AMF) based on impulse noise detection with the wavelet threshold denoising method based on a Gaussian mixture model (GMM). The simulation results show that the proposed method achieves much better denoising performance than the median filter or the wavelet denoising method for images contaminated with mixed noise.

  • This paper proposes a fast motion estimation algorithm based on motion speed and multiple initial center points. The proposed method predicts initial search points by means of the spatio-temporal neighboring motion vectors. A dynamic search pattern based on motion speed and the predicted initial center points is proposed to quickly obtain the motion vector. Due to the usage of the spatio-temporal information and the dynamic search pattern, the proposed method greatly accelerates the search speed while maintaining a good predicted image quality. Experimental results show that the proposed method has a good predicted image quality in terms of PSNR with less search time as compared to the Full Search, New Three-Step Search, and Four-Step Search.

  • From the 90's, the image information retrieval methods have been on progress. As good examples of the methods, Conventional histogram method and merged-color histogram method were introduced. Dey could get good result in image retrieval. However, Conventional histogram method has disadvantages if the histogram is shifted as a result of intensity change. Merged-color histogram, also, causes more process so, it needs more time to retrieve images. In this paper, we propose an improved new method using Adaptive Color Histogram(ACH) in image retrieval. The proposed method has been tested and verified through a number of simulations using hundreds of images in a database. The simulation results have quickly yielded the highly accurate candidate images in comparison to other retrieval methods. We show that ACH's can give superior results to color histograms for image retrieval.

  • The traditional feature extraction algorithms for recognition of communication signals can hardly realize the balance between computational complexity and signals' interclass gathered degrees. They can hardly achieve high recognition rate at low SNR conditions. To solve this problem, a novel feature extraction algorithm based on Holder coefficient was proposed, which has the advantages of low computational complexity and good interclass gathered degree even at low SNR conditions. In this research, the selection methods of parameters and distribution properties of the extracted features regarding Holder coefficient theory were firstly explored, and then interval gray relation algorithm with improved adaptive weight was adopted to verify the effectiveness of the extracted features. Compared with traditional algorithms, the proposed algorithm can more accurately recognize signals at low SNR conditions. Simulation results show that Holder coefficient based features are stable and have good interclass gathered degree, and interval gray relation classifier with adaptive weight can achieve the recognition rate up to 87% even at the SNR of -5dB.

  • The error diffusion algorithm is good for reproducing continuous images to binary images. However the reproduction of edge characteristics is weak in power spectrum an analysis of display error. In this paper an edge enhanced error diffusion method is proposed to improve the edge characteristic enhancement. Spatial gradient information in original image is adapted for edge enhance in threshold modulation of error diffusion. First the horizontal and vertical second order differential values are obtained from the gradient of peripheral pixels(3x3) in original image. second weighting function is composed by function including absolute value and sign of second order differential values. The proposed method presents a good visual results which edge characteristics is enhanced. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the conventional edge enhanced error diffusion by measuring the edge correlation and the local average accordance over a range of viewing distances and the RAPSD of display error.

  • Level control in the steam generator of a nuclear power plant is important process. But, the low power operation of nuclear power plant causes nonlinear characteristics and non minimum phase characteristics (swell and shrink), change of delay. So, we can't lead good results with conventional PID controller. Particularly, the design of controller with constraints is necessary. This paper introduces MPC(Model Predictive Control) with constraints and designs a good performance MPC controller in spite of the input constraints and nonlinear characteristics, non-minimum phase characteristics

  • Purpose: This study was done to describe the health information needs of grandmothers caring for their grandchildren. Methods: Participants in this study was 8 grandmothers caring for their grandchildren entering school. The data were collected through in-depth interviews using a semi-structured questionnaire. The interviews done from March 7 to 9 in 2005. The contents of the interview were analyzed using the inductive content analysis method. Results: 3 main categories emerged from 5 theme clusters and 17 themes. The categories were 'health of grandmother', 'health of grandchildren', and 'health of adult'. Conclusion: In conclusion, it was found that the grandmothers have the variable health management needs of family members. From this study it is proposed that there is a need to develop programs for information of health management of family members and health care to improve their quality of life. Ultimately, a good care environment for children will be good for the children's growth and development.
