  • The aim of this research is to study the functioning of the peak variations at the end of the rhythmic groups in spoken french. For this purpose, the text '60 Voix, 60 Exercices', published by Hachette in 1988, was selected. This textbook is based on interviews with 60 persons who briefly speak in a monolog from on a subject of their choice. 500 hundred different groups were selected and submitted to the auditory judgment of six informants, three French natives and three Japanese natives who had studied French for at least three years. It was found, first, that there exists a tendency to a change of either rising or tolling intonation compared with the flat one, and second, that the rising intonation obtains a flirty good score of frequency compared with the two other, ones even if the examined sentences do not pertain to the strict classical types of interrogative or exclamative sentences or dialogs, where affectivity is so often an important factor.

  • This thesis describes pronunciation differences of vowel lengths between Koreans and Americans speaking English words and sentences. This study also analizes the reasons for these differences with the help of acoustic instruments. Sixteen sentences and eight words were selected as the experimental material. The informants for this study were 9 males; 3 Americans and 6 Koreans, who were asked to pronounce the test words and sentences five times. In this study, the acoustical analysis to measure duration was done through computer digital techniques. According to the results of the experiment, duration of 8 English vowels pronounced between Koreans and Americans shows very different features. When Koreans pronounce English vowels, the duration of the stressed vowel in the sentence-final position is much shorter than in other positions, such as in the sentence-initial and in word position. On the contrary, when Americans pronounce English vowels, the duration of the stressed vowel in the sentence-final position is much longer than in other positions. If the correlation between length and stress were to be studied in a more detailed manner, it would give fundamental help to the study of relation between stress and length.

  • This study describes the focus in nine structure types of English relative clauses (SS, SO, SP, PS, PO, PP, OS, OO, OP), classified according to the grammatical role of both the head that the relative clause modifies and the gap within the relative clause. The informants for this study are 2 middle school students, 4 high school students in four formal classroom in Korea and 2 native speakers. To obtain the accurate intonation patterns, Visi-Pitch II Model 3300 was used for data analyses. Major findings are as follows: (1) The feature of the intonation in English relative clauses showed prosodic prominence at the head, but the English learners in Korea didn't show prosodic prominence; (2) the fact that all heads have prosodic prominence says that the head in relative clauses has prosodic focus; (3) in the fact that the English learners have flat pitch in the whole sentences, the problem of intonation education is found out.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the acoustic patterns of Japanese /t/ produced by 40 Korean speakers in order to find an effective method of teaching it to Koreans. The experimental data consisted of 400 /t/ phonemes in word initial or non-initial positions of 10 words. Informants were in their twenties and raised in Daejeon and the surrounding area. Results showed that there were distinctive trends in duration and intensity of the major and non-major groups productions. Both groups pronounced the phoneme longer than the native speakers with more open mouths but with less loudness. The formant analysis showed that F1 values of the Japanese /t/ pronounced by Japanese major group were lower than those of the non-major. Its F2 values by the major group were higher than those of the non-major, which would suggest that the Koreans produced the tongue blade in more frontal position than the native speakers.

  • This paper investigated -eullanjira sentence as a kind of construction of the Southwestern dialect in Korea. Five informants were selected to form the main corpus of -eullanjira. Through analyzing the corpus, its semantic, syntactic and morphological characteristics were figured out. Firstly, a view of construction grammar was adopted to capture the semantic and syntactic characteristics of -eullanjira. The construction of -eullanjira was established as "Xdo Yeullanjira Z". Syntactically, -do was found to be a common auxiliary particle, which allowed nouns, adverbs, verbs and adjectives to appear at the position of X, while only verbs and adjectives could appear at the position of Y. Subject-honorific, causative and passive prefinal endings could coexist with Y, while tense and modal prefinal endings could not. Z was an embedded clause, which had the semantic feature of [-DOUBT], meaning 'it should be done undoubtedly'. The formation of -eullanjira was next examined both diachronically and synchronically. It was found there was a conjuntive ending of Middle Korean, corresponding -eullanjira, namely, -landai. Finally, -eullanjira was newly analyzed as [[-eulla-]+[-n-ji-ra]].

  • This study was conducted to examine 10 Belizean teachers' conceptions about the causes of seasonal change. This research was conducted with an integrated method using a open ended written test and an interview which included a drawing. There are four categories, explained by the teachers, as the causes of seasonal changes. They are; climate, rotation of the earth on its axis, revolution of the earth around the sun, and the tilting of earth's axis as it revolves. Most teachers misunderstood that the first of three categories was responsible for seasonal change. Second, it is more effective to use the integrated method shown in this research than to use only a written test when seriously investigating the causes and understanding of seasonal change. Third, 8 out of 10 teachers could not correctly explain the causes of seasonal change. The reasons for seasonal change seemed to be hard for the informants to understand even though it was taught in elementary, middle, high school, and college elective classes.
