Strategic Management of Royalty System in the National R&D Programs for Industrial Technology (국가연구개발사업의 기술료 제도 개선: 산업 기술개발사업을 중심으로)

  • Industrial Technology Development Program enables the recipient to set up technology infrastructure and to facilitate technology diffusion. In return, government charges royalty from the program recipient. However, the current royalty system is not in the effective form. This study analyzes the various aspects of royalty collection methods applied to the Industrial Technology Development Program and recommend the following: (1) employ the combination of fixed amount royalty and running royalty with predetermined portion of revenue generated, (2) adjust the royalty collection duration by applying product life cycle, and (3) devise new program to link extra-gain from royalty collection with commercialization and other means to increase the effectiveness of research and development activities.

Implementing a POP System using Similarity Evaluation Method (유사도 평가 방법론을 이용한 POP 시스템의 구현)

  • A POP system, which collects manufacturing data from the shop floors and supply them to higher level systems, should be maintained and upgraded according to the change of production environment such as new product introduction. This situation leads to the need of a cost-effective system development methodology. In this paper, a methodology based on the classification and the similarity comparison of manufacturing processes is proposed. In this, a new product is classified according to the similarity of its manufacturing processes, which enables recycling of existing system modules. The proposed methodology has been tested in the case of an electronics parts manufacturing company, where a POP system is implemented. The result shows that the proposed methodology can save time and efforts for system implementation.

Effect of the Design Management Strategy on the Industrial Craft Product Purchase Intention (디자인 경영 전략이 산업공예 제품 구매의도에 미치는 영향)

  • As craft is representing the historical culture of one country based on the old cultural characteristics and traditions of the regions in our life and is also representing the contemporary cultural culture, the interest in the crafts is becoming bigger and bigger as days pass by. However, despite this potentiality for growth, the craft that we encounter is not reflecting the ever-changing environment of the times, is failing to go beyond the folk art industry level of 1970s to 1980s. Although most of the industrial craft corporations have highly developed craft technology, but the products are not sublimated into marketable products. Also, so far schemes for development of industrial craft have not been many and studies on industrial craft in a sense of the design management have not been performed. Accordingly, this study intends to survey the effect of the design management strategy on the industrial craft product purchase intention in the industrial craft. The main contents comprehended in the study process are as follows. The design management strategy affects the industrial craft product purchase intention. Among the lower elements of the design management strategy, which are cost reduction-oriented design strategy, image-oriented design strategy and the market-oriented design strategy, the image-oriented design strategy and the market-oriented design strategy showed to affect the industrial craft product purchase intention. Especially, the image-oriented design strategy showed to affect the industrial craft purchase intention more than the market-oriented design strategy does.

An Empirical Analysis of Industrial Design′s Functional Role in the Causal Model of Quality Competitiveness : Korean Manufacturing Sector (품질경쟁력 인과모형 하에서 산업디자인의 기능적 역할에 관한 실증적 분석 : 한국 제조업 부문을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study are two the first is to identify the positioning of product design and analyze its functional relationship with product development, manufacturing, marketing and sales in the comprehensive competitiveness evaluation model ; and the second is to estimate the determinants of QCI(quality competitiveness index), analyze the impact of product design on QCI, and compare the aforementioned results for the seven industrial sectors and the five product patterns. For this empirical analysis, this study surveyed 400 Korean manufacturing firms during August-October 2003. The major empirical findings are summarized as follows : First, the hypothesis on the positive effect of product design on QCI is accepted at a highly significant level (p < 0.001) for all : the manufacturing sector, seven industrial sectors, and five product categories. Second, the correlation analysis and factor analysis lead to the result that the effect of product design on QCI is estimated to be relatively very low, in comparison to those of product functionality and basic performance on QCI. These findings imply that Korean manufacturing sector has been still in the prematured stage at which product design has not played an important role yet. This study concludes that product design in line with other functions (product development, manufacturing, marketing, and sales) should make a good contribution to the improvement of QCI in the future.

  • Consumer innovativeness is a force that leads to innovative behavior of consumer and it is crucial for companies to understand the innovativeness in association with the new innovative product adoption. The purpose of this paper is to examines the influence of Consumer's inherent innovativeness, product involvement, and product expertise on consumers's vicarious and adoptive innovativeness. For this purpose, the model has been set and examined the influence of consumer innovativeness, product involvement and product expertise on vicarious and adoptive innovativeness. The results revealed that 1) consumer innovativeness would not influence vicarious and adoptive innovativeness, 2) vicarious innovativeness had affect on adoptive innovativeness 3) product involvement had a affect on both vicarious and adoptive innovativeness 4) product expertise had a affect on vicarious innovativeness and yet had no affect on adoptive innovativeness.

  • The Purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of the country image and brand image of product on Chinese consumers' brand attitude and the purchasing behavior. The results of this research are wrapped up as follows : First, the original country image of product is positive related to the product brand image itself. Second, both the country image and brand image of product have positive influences on consumers' brand attitude. Third, Chinese consumers' brand attitude has positive influences on purchasing behavior. Forth, both the country image and brand image of product have positive influences on consumers' purchasing behavior.

Research on the Effects of Knowledge Management Capabilities and Knowledge Sharing Mechanisms on New Product Development Performance in Taiwan's High-tech Industries

  • High-tech industries in Taiwan exist in an environment with diverse product requirements and intense cost reduction and information integration stress. They must develop new operational directions to increase industry competitiveness. Therefore, Taiwan's high-tech industries must continue R&D and creativity, establish knowledge sharing mechanisms and improve new product development (NPD) performance. This research analyzed and explored the influences of knowledge management (KM) and knowledge sharing mechanisms introduced by Taiwan's high-tech industries on new product development performance. The relationship between knowledge management capabilities and NPD performance is studied. This research considers the intervening industry and corporate position variables. Taiwan's high-tech industries have gradually entered the era of IT region integration and application with competitive advantage creation based upon core techniques. The in-depth study of knowledge management and knowledge sharing introduced by the high-tech industry revealed double meanings in academic and practical applications. The research results showed the following: (1) the stronger the knowledge management capabilities of Taiwan's high-tech industries, the more significant the NPD performance. (2) The better the knowledge sharing mechanism in Taiwan's high-tech industries, the more significant the NPD performance. (3) Corporate scale is not necessarily the critical factor in NPD success and the influence of corporate scale on NPD performance did not show significant differences. (4) The stronger the degree of leading corporate techniques, the more significant the NPD performance.

Optimal Operation for Green Supply Chain with Quality of Recyclable Parts and Contract for Recycling Activity

  • This study discusses a contract to promote collection and recycling of used products in a green supply chain (GSC). A collection incentive contract is combined with a reward-penalty contract. The collection incentive contract for used products is made between a retailer and a manufacturer. The reward-penalty contract for recycling used products is made between a manufacturer and an external institution. A retailer pays an incentive for collecting used products from customers and delivers them to a manufacturer with a product order quantity under uncertainty in product demand. A manufacturer remanufactures products using recyclable parts with acceptable quality levels and covers a part of the retailer's incentive from the recycled parts by sharing the reward from an external institution. Product demand information is assumed as (i) the distribution is known (ii) mean and variance are known. Besides, the optimal decisions for product quantity, collection incentive of used products and lower limit of quality level for recyclable parts under decentralized integrated GSCs. The analysis numerically investigates how (1) contract for recycling activity, (ii) product demand information and (iii) quality of recyclable parts affect the optimal operation for each GSC. Supply chain coordination to shift IGSC is discussed by adopting Nash Bargaining solution.

A Study on the Effects of Total Product Liability Activities on Firm Performance (전사적 제조물책임활동이 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to find empirical relationship between PL activities and firm performance. Five categories of PL activities and three performance measures were examined. Using a sample of 135 companies, we found that activities related to TQM practices and manufacturing defect had significant impacts on all three measures of performance. Activities related to design defect, warning defect and sales partially influenced performance measures. The result suggests that performance could be maximized by the mutual organic combination of the product safety efforts with the overall process from design to sales.
