  • The structures and mechanical property of the unidirectionally solidified Al-Co eutectic alloy were investigated. Al-Co eutectic alloy was unidirectionally solidified with growth rates(R) between I cm/hr and 10 cm/hr in the induction furnace maintaining the thermal gradient (G) at solid-liquid interface, $32^{\circ}C$/cm. The eutectic microstructure was varied with the growth condition(G/R ratio). When the G/R ratio was larger than $8.5{\times}10^{3}^{\circ}C/cm^{2}/sec$, a lamellar structure was formed, But the G/R ratio was smaller than $8.5{\times}10^{3}^{\circ}C/cm^{2}/sec$, a colony structure was formed. It was found that the interlamellar spacing(${\lambda}$) was dependent on the growth rate(R) with the relationship, ${\lambda}^{2}{\cdot}R=constant$. The microhardness of this eutectic alloy increased with increase in the growth rate.

  • The effects of heat treatments in Al-Si-Mg alloys on the microstructure and hardness have been investigated by the optical microscope, scanning electron microscope(SEM), and Rockwell hardness tester. The materials of various compositions are melted in a vacuum induction furnace under argon atmosphere. Five different Al alloys are prepared from commercial purity aluminium, magnesium and Al-25Si alloy. Two types of aging treatments are performed: i) Isothermal aging of the specimens at $150^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$. ii) Pre-aging of the specimens at $60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$, and followed by final-aging at $170^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$. After the heat treatments, Rockwell hardness are measured with all the specimens.

  • Mg-9wt.%Al and Mg-9wt.%-1.6wt%Zn/SiCp(particle size $40{\mu}m$) metal-matrix-composite specimens were manufactured by rheo-compocasting method, known for its effect of improving the wettability. The ceramic reinforcement particles(SiCp) were dispersed in the semi-solid magnesium alloy matrix slurry being vigorously stirred in a high frequency induction furnace under inert atmosphere. A microstructural study of the dispersed particles in the specimens, prepared under different conditions as regards the time(10min, 20min, 30min) and temperature of the stirring, was made with the aid of optical microscope and SEM. The effect of superheating was also observed. It is revealed that 30 minutes' stirring time of the semi-solid at 40% solid fraction temperature(Mg-9wt.%Al : $590^{\circ}C$, AZ91 : $576^{\circ}C$), as determined by the lever rule, gives a satisfactorily uniform distribution of the particles. The superheating is observed to enhance further the uniformity.

  • This paper aims to investigate the effect of B and Si upon the mechanical properties, microstructure and corrosion resistance of Co-Cr base alloy. Ten groups of alloy ingot ingot with various contents of B and Si were remelted by high frequency electrical induction furnace and cast into tensile specimen of ADA Specification No. 14 Tensile and hardness test were carried out by Amsler and Rockwell hardness tester(R-30N), respectively. The microstructures of specimen were observed by SEM. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. As B content is increased, tensile strength, yield strength and Rockwell hardness number(R-30N) are also increased significantly, while the elongation is decreased significantly. 2. As Si contect os increased, no significant chang in tensile strength is noticed, yield strength is slightly decreased, but Rockwell hardness number(R-30N) is moderately in creased, Elongation marks maxium value with 1% Si content while with more than 1% Si it is decreased. 3. As B content is increased corrosion resistance is decreased and is at best with 1.5% B content. Corrosion resistance is increased with the increase of Si content and the alloys with Si over 3.0% showed corrosion resistance. 4. As B content increased, precipitates are increased in number at grain boundaries. The grain size tends to become coarse with the increase of Si content. 5. Co rich-Cr alloy is present through matrix whereas at the grain boundaries Cr base precipitates are primarily formed.

  • As competition among global automakers intensifies, demand for materials that are better in price and performance is increasing. While steel and plastic materials compete for automotive fuel tanks, plastic materials have advantages such as light weight for automobiles. However, they have high prices. Accordingly, in this paper, four types of Zn-X plated steel sheets, electroplating (X = none, Sn) and galvannealed (X = Fe, Fe-Mg), were manufactured and their applicability as a fuel tank material was evaluated. Nano-composite coating solution with good conductivity was treated on the surface of plated steels using a roll coater and then cured through induction furnace to improve corrosion resistance. Quality characteristics such as corrosion resistance, fuel resistance to diverse gasoline and diesel fuels, and seam weldability were evaluated for the above plated steels. Their properties were compared and analyzed with conventional Zn-Ni electroplating steels. Among the above plated steels, Zn-Fe-Mg galvannealed steels coated with nano-composite coating exhibited better properties than other steels. Detailed experimental results suggest that evenly distributed Mg elements on the coating layer play a key role in the enhanced quality performance.

  • Flicker, also known as voltage fluctuation, is a newest problem of power quality issues, because it is caused by nonlinear loads such as electrical arc furnace and large-scale induction motor, which are country-widely used as the heavy industries of a country develop. An international standard, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61000-4-15, was published in 1997 and revised in 2003. With increasing concerns about flicker, its mitigation methods have been also studied. General countermeasures for flicker are divided into three categories: a) enhancing the capacity of supplying system, b) Series elements including series reactor and series capacitor and c) power electronic devices including static VAR compensator (SVC) and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). This paper introduces how to mitigate the voltage flicker at the point of common coupling (PCC) and presents how to simulate and compare the flicker alleviating effects by each mitigation method, using IEC flickermeter based on the Matlab/Simulink program.

  • Si-cell was prepared with various types owing to the etching times textured by the KOH etching solution. The pn junction for solar cell was prepared on p-type Si wafer by the furnace using the $POCl_3$ and oxygen mixed precursor, and the metalization was done using by the Al back electrode and Ag front electrode. Textured Si surface was etched by the pyramid formation. The efficiency and the fill factor was increased in the Si-cell with a large size of pyramids, because of the series resistances decrease depending on the increasing of the photon absorbance. Increasing of the absorbance occurred the induction of the short current and open voltage, and then the efficiency was increased.

  • The effect of $\beta$-heat treatment on th microstructure, mechanical properties and texture in the nuclear fuel cladding of Zircaloy-4 tubes was chosen at 1000, 1100 and 120$0^{\circ}C$, and the tubes were heat-treated by a high frequency vacuum induction furnace. Morphology of the second phase particles and $\alpha$-grain of as-received tubes were markedly changed by heat treatment. The average sizes of second phase particles of as-received and $\beta$-heat treated tubes were 0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 0.076$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. However, the average sizes of second phase particles were not much changed in the $\beta$-heated temperatures. With increasing heat treatment temperatures, the 0.2% yield strength and the hoop strength were decreased because of changes in preferred orientation as will as $\alpha$-plate width. Heat treated Zircaloy-4 tubes exhibited texture changes but the preferred orientation of grains still remained.
