  • We present a self-localization method for mobile robots using vertical line features of indoor environment. When a 2D map including feature points and color information is given, a mobile robot moves to the destination, and acquires images from the surroundings having vertical line edges by one camera. From the image, vertical line edges are detected, and pattern vectors meaning averaged color values of the left and right regions of the each line are computed by using the properties of the line and a region growing method. The pattern vectors are matched with the feature points of the map by comparing the color information and the geometrical relationship. From the perspective transformation and rigid transformation of the corresponded points, nonlinear equations are derived. Localization is carried out from solving the equations by using Newton's method. Experimental results show that the proposed method using mono view is simple and applicable to indoor environment.

  • The research on the avoidance of the large-obstacles such as a wall, a large box, etc. using ultrasonic sensors has been generally progressed up to now. But the mobile robot could meet a small-obstacle such as a small plastic bottle, a small sphere, and so on in its designated path, and could be disturbed by them in the locomotion of the mobile robot. So, it is necessary to research on the avoidance of a small-obstacle. In this paper, a robot's small-obstacle perceiving system was designed and fabricated by arranging four ultrasonic sensors on the plastic plate to avoid small-obstacles. The system was installed on the upper part of the mobile robot with the slope angles between $40.7^{\circ}$ and $23.3^{\circ}$ to a horizontal line and the dynamic characteristic test of the robot was performed. As the result, it was confirmed that the mobile robot with the system could avoid small-obstacles in indoor environment safely.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for a mobile robot to estimate a specific location of a service provision target using a beacon-tag for the purpose of providing location-based services (LBS) to users in an indoor environment. To estimate the location, the irregular characteristics and error factors of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) generated from the beacon are analyzed, and the distance conversion function is derived from the RSSI data extracted by applying a Gaussian filter. Then, the distance data converted from the plurality of beacons estimates an indoor location through a triangulation technique. After that, the improvement in the location estimation is analyzed by applying the temporal confidence reasoning technique. The possibility of providing a LBS of a mobile robot was confirmed through a location estimation experiment for a plurality of designated locations in an indoor environment.

  • We implement an educational indoor autonomous mobile robot system that integrates LiDAR sensing information with RGB-D camera image information and exploits the integrated information. This system uses the existing sensing method employing a LiDAR with a small number of scan channels to acquire LiDAR sensing information. To remedy the weakness of the existing LiDAR sensing method, we propose the 3D structure recognition technique using depth images from a RGB-D camera and the deep learning based object recognition algorithm and apply the proposed technique to the system.

  • Recently, with the development of service robots and with the new concept of ubiquitous world, the position estimation of mobile objects has been raised to an important problem. As pre-liminary research results, some of the localization schemes are introduced, which provide the relative location of the moving objects subjected to accumulated errors. To implement a real time localization system, a new absolute position estimation method for a mobile robot in indoor environment is proposed in this paper. Design and implementation of the localization system comes from the usage of active beacon systems (based upon RFID technology). The active beacon system is composed of an RFID receiver and an ultra-sonic transmitter: 1. The RFID receiver gets the synchronization signal from the mobile robot and 2. The ultra-sonic transmitter sends out the traveling signal to be used for measuring the distance. Position of a mobile robot in a three dimensional space can be calculated basically from the distance information from. Three beacons and the absolute position information of the beacons themselves. In some case, the mobile robot can get the ultrasonic signals from only one or two beacons, because of the obstacles located along the moving path. Therefore, in this paper, as one of our dedicated contribution, the position estimation scheme with less than three sensors has been developed. Also, the extended Kalman filter algorithm is applied for the improvement of position estimation accuracy of the mobile robot.

  • It is very important for a mobile robot to estimate its current position With precise information about the current position, the mobile robot can do path-planning or environmental map building successfully. In this paper, a position estimation method using one color image is presented. The mobile robot(K2A) takes an image of a corridor and searches for the door and pillar, which are the given landmarks. The color information is used to distinguish the landmarks. In order to represent the presence of the landmarks, Image Mode is defined. This method adopts Kullback information distance. If a landmark is detected, with the color information, the mobile robot identifies the vertical line of the landmark and its crossing point and an experimental navigation is performed.

  • This paper presents a design for the novel suspension mechanism of a two-wheeled mobile robot having two casters which is used for indoor environment. Although the indoor environment is less rough than the outdoor one, the fixed caster mechanism has some problems such as causing the robot to be immovable because robot's driving wheels do not have contact with the ground. Therefore, we tried installing a spring-damper suspension mechanism to keep driving capability and to remove pitching phenomenon. However, this suspension mechanism also has the problem, which the robot body inclined by disturbances does not return to the initial position. To deal with above problems and to accomplish desired performances, we designed the Multilayered Suspension Mechanism, which has springs and dampers working partially according to the inclined angle and angular velocity of robot body concerned with pitching. To analyze design, the equations of motion describing their dynamics were developed. Using the equations, simulation results show the improved performance. We confirm the usefulness of the Multilayered Suspension Mechanism by construction and test of a actual prototype.

  • In this paper we present a cleaning robot system for an autonomous mobile robot. Our robot performs goal reaching tasks into unknown indoor environments by using sensor fusion. The robot's operation objective is to clean floor or any other applicable surface and to build a map of the surrounding environment for some further purpose such as finding the shortest path available. Using its cleaning robot system for an autonomous mobile robot can move in various modes and perform dexterous tasks. Performance of the cleaning robot system is better than a fixed base redundant robot in avoiding singularity and obstacle. Sensor fusion using the clean robot improves the performance of the robot with redundant freedom in workspace and Map-Building. In this paper, Map-building of the cleaning robot has been studied using sensor fusion. A sequence of this alternating task execution scheme enables the clean robot to execute various tasks efficiently. The proposed algorithm is experimentally verified and discussed with a cleaning robot, KCCR.

  • This paper proposes a hierarchical roadmap (HRM) and its construction process to efficiently represent navigable areas in an indoor environment. HRM is adopted to solve the path-planning problems of mobile robots in indoor environments. HRM has a multi-layered graphical structure that enables it to abstract and cover navigable areas using a smaller number of nodes and edges than a probabilistic roadmap. During the incremental process of constructing HRM, information on navigable areas is abstracted using a sonar gridmap when the mobile robot navigates an unexplored area. The HRM-based planner efficiently searches for paths to answer queries by reducing the search space size using the multi-layered graphical structure. The benefits of the proposed HRM are experimentally verified in real indoor environments.

  • Recently, many researchers have developed various service robots, in which the position estimation and path following of mobile objects have been raised an important problem. We should know where a mobile robot so that there are many introduced localization and path following schemes. In this paper, we propose an efficient localization algorithm for the precise localization of a mobile robot with the glaser stream sensor. We use the glaser stream sensor for following a given path in indoor environments. Since the glaser stream sensor utilizes precise optical motion estimation technology, we can achieve high speed motion detection and high resolution. The experimental results show that the glaser stream sensor may be a good sensor for many indoor service robots.
