  • In this study, we built a mock-up of an indoor garden for private use and vertical gardens were installed on the walls of this indoor garden model. The purpose of this study is to examine the types of plants for best fit for growth and nurture in vertical garden and to identify the effects of indoor air quality improvement by these plants. As the result of the experiment, 22 species out of 32 species previously used for indoor garden was selected to be suitable for vertical gardens of a personal indoor garden. 10 species were found to be inappropriate for a personal indoor garden in terms of ornamental value, growth status and maintenance. The effect of plants on reducing CO2 has been proven by many studies. Also, through photosynthesis, plants combine CO2 with water and produce sugars and O2 (oxygen). Everyone accepts this fact. In nature, the production of oxygen is so important that without plants we would soon use it up and die. From the NASA Fact Sheet we know that air contains 20.95% O2 and 0.04% CO2. If you had enough plants in a room to use up all of the all of CO2 and convert it to oxygen, the oxygen levels would increase from 20.95% to 21%. This increase is difficult to detect and would have no effect on humans.

  • Bypass air conditioning systems are divided into three types; outdoor air bypass, mixed air bypass and return air bypass system. Among bypass air conditioning systems, a return air bypass system is more effective than other two systems because it doesn't induce unconditioned outdoor air into conditioned room. The numerical study on the bypass air conditioning system shows this system can maintain indoor RH(Relative Humidity) less than a conventional CAV (Constant Air Volume) air conditioning system by adjusting face and bypass dampers at part load. A simulator was built to compare results of a numerical experiment and those of a simulator experiment. The results of the simulator experiment was nearly same as those of the numerical experiment; when a design sensible load (the ratio of sensible load to total sensible load) was 70 percent (at this time, RSHF=0.7), indoor relative humidity (in case of both numerical experiments and simulator experiments) was maintained below 60% specified by ASHRAE STANDARD 62-1999. The bypass air conditioning system is expected to be applied to many buildings where the Percentage of latent loads or air change tate is high.

  • Safety is a big issue in the construction sites. For safe and secure management, tracking locations of construction resources such as labors, materials, machineries, vehicles and so on is important. The materials, machineries and vehicles could be controlled by computer, whereas the movement of labors does not have fixed pattern. So, the location and movement of labors need to be monitored continuously for safety. In general, Global Positioning System(GPS) is an opt solution to obtain the location information in outside environments. But it cannot be used for indoor locations as it requires a clear Line-Of-Sight(LOS) to satellites Therefore, indoor location monitoring system could be a convenient alternative for environments such as tunnel and indoor building construction sites. This paper presents a case study to investigate feasibility of Wi-Fi based indoor location monitoring system in construction site. The system is developed by using fingerprint map of gathering Received Signal Strength Indication(RSSI) from each Access Point(AP). The signal information is gathered by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, which are attached on a helmet of labors to track their locations, and is sent to server computer. Experiments were conducted in a shield tunnel construction site at Guangzhou, China. This study consists of three phases as follows: First, we have a tracking test in entrance area of tunnel construction site. This experiment was performed to find the effective geometry of APs installation. The geometry of APs installation was changed for finding effective locations, and the experiment was performed using one and more tags. Second, APs were separated into two groups, and they were connected with LAN cable in tunnel construction site. The purpose of this experiment was to check the validity of group separating strategy. One group was installed around the entrance and the other one was installed inside the tunnel. Finally, we installed the system inner area of tunnel, boring machine area, and checked the performance with varying conditions (the presence of obstacles such as train, worker, and so on). Accuracy of this study was calculated from the data, which was collected at some known points. Experimental results showed that WiFi-based indoor location system has a level of accuracy of a few meters in tunnel construction site. From the results, it is inferred that the location tracking system can track the approximate location of labors in the construction site. It is able to alert the labors when they are closer to dangerous zones like poisonous region or cave-in..

  • Spatial information services in indoor space are an im portant application area of GIS as in outdoor space. Unlike in outdoor space, a position in indoor space is specified by a symbolic code such as room number, rather than coordinate. Therefore tracking in indoor space is no longer a prediction of coordinates but a symbolic estimation on the current position of a moving object. In this paper, we propose a framework for tracking moving objects in indoor symbolic space with RFID sensors. First, we introduce the concepts of indoor symbolic space and tracking in indoor symbolic space, and define the accessibility graph for trackable indoor symbolic space. Second, we propose a deployment method of RFID readers and a construction algorithm of accessibility graph for trackable indoor symbolic space. Third, a tracking method is proposed for moving objects in symbolic indoor space with RFID sensors. Finally, we present an implementation exmaple and the result of experiment with real data to validate the proposed method.

  • This study was performed on a questionnaire survey of 500 people about their awareness for indoor air pollution, and measured efficiency of air cleaner which can remove the CO and air-borne particulate of ETS(Environmental Tobacco Smoke) in air clean chamber. The room-size cleaner for measuring indoor air contaminants has been applied to evaluation of two different air cleaner such as the mechanic air cleaner with hepafilter(HPA) and the electrostatic air cleaner with metal plate. The measuring experiment was carried out in a chamber by sampling the air. The results obtained were as follows; As respondents are having their 90% of daytime indoors a day, and 38% of them can feel indoor air pollutions degrees directly by their sense of smell, For the installation of indoor pollution control equipment, 34% of all respondents installed air cleaner because of the problem of economical charge and almost respondents was not satisfied the trust of ability purified indoor air pollutants. In the experimental results, it was found that more than 95% of CD and air-borne particulate of ETS were removed within 20 minutes. The reaction kinetics of removal pollutants was verified as the pseudo-first order, Finally, it appeared that the room-sire air cleaner can be applied to new technology for removing indoor air contaminants.

  • In this paper, we propose indoor location tracking method using RSSI(Received Signal Strength Indicator) value received from BLE(Bluetooth Low Energy) beacon. Due to the influence of various external environmental factors, it is very difficult to improve the accuracy in indoor location tracking. In order to solve this problem, we propose a novel method of reducing the noise generated in the external environment by using a double Gaussian filter. In addition, the value of the RSSI signal generated in the BLE beacon is different for each device. In this study, we propose a method to allocate additional weights in order to compensate the intensity of signal generated in each device. This makes it possible to improve the accuracy of indoor location tracking using beacons. The experiment results show that the proposed method effectively decrease the RSSI deviation and increase location accuracy. In order to verify the usefulness of this study, we compared the Kalman filter algorithm which is widely used in signal processing. We further performed additional experiments for application area for indoor location service and find that the proposed scheme is useful for BLE-based indoor location service.

  • This paper presents a Bluetooth and pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR)-based indoor fusion localization approach (BtPDR) using smartphones. A Bluetooth and PDR-based indoor fusion localization approach can localize the initial position of a smartphone with the received signal strength (RSS) of Bluetooth. While a smartphone is moving, BtPDR can track its position by fusing the localization results of PDR and Bluetooth RSS. In addition, BtPDR can adaptively modify the parameters of PDR. The contributions of BtPDR include: a Bluetooth RSS-based Probabilistic Voting (BRPV) localization mechanism, a probabilistic voting-based Bluetooth RSS and PDR fusion method, and a heuristic search approach for reducing the complexity of BRPV. The experiment results in a real scene show that the average positioning error is < 2m, which is considered adequate for indoor location-based service applications. Moreover, compared to the traditional PDR method, BtPDR improves the location accuracy by 42.6%, on average. Compared to state-of-the-art Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) fingerprint + PDR-based fusion indoor localization approaches, BtPDR has better positioning accuracy and does not need the same offline workload as a fingerprint algorithm.

  • Although various studies about indoor positioning systems, such as beacon and Wifi, have been conducting for indoor positioning of workers at construction sites, these systems have limitations in terms of accuracy or economics. To overcome these limitations, geomagnetic field sequence-based indoor positioning technology can be a good alternative. However, it is necessary to correct the geomagnetic field near the construction material stocking area since the geomagnetic field can be distorted near construction materials such as rebars. Therefore, this study conducted an experiment for identifying correction range of geomagnetic field near the construction material stocking area. It was analyzed that the geomagnetic field should be corrected up to 60cm in the horizontal direction from the stocking point if the height of stocking area for rebars is 40cm or more. This study can be used for important reference for development of geomagnetic field sequence-based indoor positioning technology suitable for construction sites.

  • Recently the building is introducing the indoor water space. Thermal environment change with the introduction. Consequently, this study shows how water space in the public facility affects the indoor environment. We had put our experiment to measure the humidity and temperature differences in different distances of water space. The result of this study is as follows. First, We found that even though there's a water space, it makes no big change in temperature by different distance. The temperature was only maintained by a cooler. Second, As there's a water space, the humidity was affected by within 1.5 m of it. Through our experimental result, we have started our study to make a water space effective.
