  • Wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSANs) enhance the existing wireless sensor networks (WSNs) by equipping sensor nodes with an actuator. The actuators work with the sensor nodes and perform application-specific operations. The WSAN systems have several applications such as disaster relief, intelligent building, military surveillance, health monitoring, and infrastructure security. These applications require capability of reliable data transfer to act responsively and accurately. Biologically inspired modeling techniques have received considerable attention for achieving robustness, scalability, and adaptability, while retaining individual simplicity. In this paper, an epidemic-inspired algorithm for data dissemination with delay constraints while minimizing energy consumption in WSAN is proposed. The steady states and system stability are analyzed using control theory. Also, simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme provides desirable dissemination delay and energy saving.

  • Global Environment Laboratory at Yonsei University in Seoul ($37.57^{\circ}N$, $126.95^{\circ}E$) has carried out the ozone layer monitoring program in the framework of the Global Ozone Observing System of the World Meteorlogical Organization (WMO/GAW/GO3OS Station No. 252) since May of 1984. The daily measurements of total ozone and the vertical distribution of ozone amount have been made with the Dobson Spectrophotometer (No.124) on the roof of the Science Building on Yonsei campus. From 2004 through 2006, major parts of the manual operations are automated in measuring total ozone amount and vertical ozone profile through Umkehr method, and calibrating instrument by standard lamp tests with new hardware and software including step motor, rotary encoder, controller, and visual display. This system takes full advantage of Windows interface and information technology to realize adaptability to the latest Windows PC and flexible data processing system. This automatic system also utilizes card slot of desktop personal computer to control various types of boards in the driving unit for operating Dobson spectrophotometer and testing devices. Thus, by automating most of the manual work both in instrument operation and in data processing, subjective human errors and individual differences are eliminated. It is therefore found that the ozone data quality has been distinctly upgraded after automation of the Dobson instrument.

  • Multi-culturalization in our society may be the cause of many problems, but if appropriately dealt with, diversity brought on by multi-culturalization could resolve chronic abuses in education and create a new culture, thereby contributing greatly to national development. The purpose of this study was to examine the current research on multi-cultural education and to provide a normative orientation to multi-cultural education. The literature research was conducted between March 2008 and September 2009. The followings are the findings of this study. First, the results reveal that the appropriate target of a multi-cultural society should not be assimilation, but rather, multi-culturalism. Multi-culturalism has greater adaptability, and the key lies in its respect for human rights, its strengthening of multi-cultural capacity, and its consideration for the minority by moving toward corporate multi-culturalism that aims for equality in results. Second, the first form of multi-cultural education emphasizes neutrality and argues that it is the best way to respect different cultures. This form of multi-cultural education emphasizes neutrality toward "sameness." In this context, sameness means equality of the rights of human beings. The other form of multi-cultural education emphasizes diversity and argues that it is the best way to respect different cultures. It focuses on the recognition of particularity. But it reveals its shortcomings when it excludes interaction not only between an individual and the culture, but also between the insider and outsider of the culture and its social institutions. Thus, multi-cultural education for mutual understanding is suggested. Third, it has been found that pure homogeneous nationalism must be destroyed, but nationalism needs to transform itself rather than be abolished in a globalized and multi-cultural society. Moreover, on behalf of pursuing open nationalism, the self-transformation of nationalism is advisable, in order to for it to overcome its antagonistic and exclusive nature.

  • Fiber-reinforced polymer composites, which are made by combining a continuous fiber that acts as reinforcement and a homogeneous polymeric material that acts as a host, are engineering materials with high strength and stiffness and a lightweight structure. In this study, a shape memory alloy(SMA) reinforced composite actuator is presented. This actuator is used to generate large deformations in single lightweight structures and can be used in applications requiring a high degree of adaptability to various external conditions. The proposed actuator consists of numerous individual laminas of the glass-fiber fabric that are embedded in a polymeric matrix. To characterize its deformation behavior, the composition of the actuator was changed by changing the matrix material and the number of the glass-fiber fabric layers. In addition, current of various magnitudes were applied to each actuator to study the effect of the heating of SMA wires on applying current.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to enhance adaptability in a dialogue system using the reinforcement learning that reduces response errors by trials and error-search similar to a human dialogue process. The adaptive dialogue strategy means that the dialogue system improves users' satisfaction and dialogue efficiency by loaming users' dialogue styles. To apply the reinforcement learning to the dialogue system, we use a main-dialogue span and sub-dialogue spans as the mathematic application units, and evaluate system usability by using features; success or failure, completion time, and error rate in sub-dialogue and the satisfaction in main-dialogue. In addition, we classify users' groups into beginners and experts to increase users' convenience in training steps. Then, we apply reinforcement learning policies according to users' groups. In the experiments, we evaluated the performance of the proposed method on the individual reinforcement learning policy and group's reinforcement learning policy.

  • This study proposes the suggested amount of clothing (SAC) and examines the preferred amount of clothing (PAC) for thermal comfort in mild cold conditions. Six male and nine female college students were systematically exposed to mild cold conditions by reducing the amount of clothing (Step I, 1.2clo ${\rightarrow}$ Step II, 1.0clo ${\rightarrow}$ Step III, 0.8clo ${\rightarrow}$ Step IV, 0.7clo). The subjects were then asked to adjust the amount of clothing to attain overall thermal comfort until they maintained thermal comfort for 10 minutes without changing the amount of clothing (Step V). The experiment was carried out in a climatic chamber at $19.5^{\circ}C$, 50%R.H. Body composition was measured and individual cold climate adaptability was surveyed before starting the experiment. Rectal temperature ($T^{re}$), skin temperature ($T_{sk}$), and oxygen consumption ($\dot{V}O_2$) were measured and the overall thermal sensation was voted in each step. PAC was obtained from the garments weight selected by each subject in Step V. SAC was proposed based on the change of oxygen consumption (${\Delta}\dot{V}O_2$). As a result, males showed higher $\bar{T}_{sk}$ and greater $O_2$ than females (p<.01). SAC obtained from $\dot{V}O_2$ were 652.0 (SE 3.9) g/$m^2$ for males and 766.0 (SE 2.5) g/$m^2$ for females and it was significantly different between groups (p<.01). PAC of males and females were 1.6 and 1.5 times heavier than SAC. In conclusion, females were more sensitive to the cold stress and recommended larger amount of clothing than males.
