  • Growth and changes of electronically conducting polypyrrole (PPy) in the form of thin films polymerized on metal electrodes were investigated by electrochemical and in situ three-parameter ellipsometry methods at the wavelength of 632.8 nm. Although the optical equations produced multiple sets of solution, it was possible to determine a unique set of thickness and the optical constants of a film by auxiliary measurements and/or physical reasoning. The changes in the thickness and the optical properties of the polymers during polymerization and electrochemical oxidation/reduction was successfully followed by the three-parameter ellipsometric technique. The optical properties of the polymers continuously changed as the film grew. The imaginary part of the refractive index of polypyrrole seemed to be dominantly determined by the existence of an absorption band around the visible range.

  • We report on the growth, structural and transport properties of zinc-blende CrAs/GaAs/MnAs/GaAs multilayers on GaAs(001) substrates. Structural analyses using in-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction and exsitu cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy confirmed the realization of a zinc-blende crystal structure. Room temperature Hall measurements reveal that the as-grown multilayer exhibits p-type conductivity with a very low resistivity of $0.052\;\omega{cm}$, a high carrier concentration of $6.2X10^{19}\;cm^{-3}$ and a Hall mobility of $1.8\;cm^2/Vs$. We also observed a clear decrease of the resistivity in samples after low temperature annealing.

  • Two real-time modeling prediction (RMP) schemes are presented in this paper for analyzing the behavior of deep excavations during construction. The first RMP scheme is developed from the traditional AR(p) model. The second is based on the simplified Elman-style recurrent neural networks. An on-line learning algorithm is introduced to describe the dynamic behavior of deep excavations. As a case study, in-situ measurements of an excavation were recorded and the measured data were used to verify the reliability of the two schemes. They proved to be both effective and convenient for predicting the behavior of deep excavations during construction. It is shown through the case study that the RMP scheme based on the neural network is more accurate than that based on the traditional AR(p) model.

  • The study of rock mass behaviour through a numerical analysis is important for the design, construction and maintenance of large rock caverns. The objectives of the numerical analysis are to design reasonably and construct safely the underground structures, to maintain them soundly after construction and to extend them securely for a desired period of time. Methods of numerical analyses included in this case study are the finite element method, the boundary element method, and the distinct element method. The numerical models are purely elastic, elastoplastic, visco-elastic, visco-plastic, easto-visco-plastic and jointed-discontinuous materials. The results of this case study indicate that the rock mass behaviour could be predicted exactly through continuous comparisons of the numerical results with the in-situ measurements.

  • Optical thickness method using double interferometer showed dynamic variations of both mechanical and optical thicknesses. Packing density measured a thickness ratio of before and after pressed single film. Lower swelled thickness of emitting layer in a device and densely packed film had shown better lifetime.

  • In this study, a concrete faced rockfill dam constructed by stages was numerically analyzed, and the numerical results were compared with in situ measurements. The simple incremental elastic and isotropic hyperbolic model was employed to characterize the nonlinear deformation behavior of rockfill material and computational procedure followed construction sequence. A series of large triaxial tests for rockfill material were carried out to obtain mechanical input parameters. According to the analysis results, relative great additional deformation was introduced at the surface of stage-I dam body due to the loading by stage-II construction. The results reveal that numerical analysis can effectively simulate the construction processes, and some meaningful insights about the behavior of CFRD during construction were gained.

  • We employed UV-Ozone treatment method for the fabrication of dense and highly conductive nanoparticle thin films. We demonstrated the UV-Ozone treatment effect on the silver nanoparticle thin films as a function of time and temperature. The capping layers of nanoparticles were decomposed after UV-Ozone treatment and dense nanoparticle thin films were obtained. Moreover, electrical and mechanical properties of the thin films after UV-Ozone treatment were measured by using resistance measurements under tension in an in-situ tensile tester. The initial resistance of nanoparticle thin films was decreased by 82.6% with optimized UV-Ozone treatment condition of $150^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes.

  • This paper presents comparisons of pullout load of concrete with compressive strength of cylinders and cores, pulse velocity, and rebound number. A pullout test, which is a relatively new nondestructive technique, measures with a special tension ram the force required to pullout a specially shaped steel rod whose enlarged end has been cast into a concrete block. In this study 3 concrete mixes(normal strength, high-strength & super-high-strength) were made. From each mix, one 100$\times$70$\times$20 concrete block, 24 cylinders$(\phi10mm)$were casted. Each tests were performed on the concrete blocks at 3, 7, 28, and 91days. The test data shows that the pullout test is superior to the rebond hammer and the pulse velocity measurements on the evaluation of concrete strength. The pullout test is satisfactory for estimating the strength of in situ concrete at both early and late age, and its results can be reproduced with an acceptable degree of accuracy.

  • Computer code was developed to design waveguide gratings based on coupled-mode equations and the transfer matrix formalism. The experimental set-up has been constructed for inscribing Bragg gratings in planar waveguides with a phase mask and uv laser beam, which enables alignment and packaging of grating devices as well as in-situ performance measurements. Bragg grating has been fabricated on silica planar waveguides with 0.75% Germanium concentration and its transmittance spectrum was measured to have 95% reflectance at the peak wavelength. Optical losses as the function of the misalignment were measured and their usage is described.

  • This is a Double-Track Railway tunnel in typical Tae-Gu black and gray shale forming part of the No.1 Line of the Tae-Gu Subway. The main fault zone at tunnel is a moderately to highly weathered and closely jointed zone, 0.5 m wide with associated paralled jointing which is slickensided and fractured. After excavation by blasting, the soft rocks should need to be reinforced with optimal supporting pattern which might be better redesigned through the consideration of the results of in-situ rock measurements at the field. Performances fo the field tests included Point Load Test, Schmidt Hammer Test, and field joint measurement gave the detail data for the optimum support design and safe excavation of the No.1 Line of Tae-Gu Subway at the No.1-7 consturction site adn the safety of this redesigned supports system was analysed by the FDM program FLAC.
