  • In this paper, we analyse and present electro-mechanical dynamic characteristics of a micro-machined vibrating silicon ring gyroscope which can measure angular velocities about three orthogonal axes. The ring gyroscope has a ring connected to the gyroscope main body by support-ligaments which are arranged with cyclic symmetry. The natural modes of its vibration can be distinguished into the in-plane motion and the out-of-plane motion which are coupled by the gyro-effect due to the notation of the gyroscope main body. The motions of the ring are electro-statically derived, sensed and balanced by electrodes. The equations of motion are formulated. The scheme of angular velocities sensing by force-to-rebalance method is presented. The dynamic characteristics of a ring gyroscope are calculated and compared.

Vibration analysis for tapered thick plate subjected to in-plane stress is presented in this paper. Finite element analysis of rectangular plate is done by use of rectangular finite element with 8-nodes. Analysis conditions of tapered thick plate are as follows each. The ratio of in-plane stress to critical load is varied with $0.2\sigma_{cr}$, $0.4\sigma_{cr}$, $0.6\sigma_{cr}$. The Winkler parameter is 0, 10, 100, 1000, the shear foundation parameter is 0, 10 and the taper ratio is 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8.

  • Free non-linear vibration of a rotating thin ring with a constant speed is analyzed when the ring has both the in-plane and out-of-plane motions. The geometric non-linearity of displacements is considered by adopting the Lagrange strain theory for the circumferential strain. By using Hamilton's principle, the coupled non-linear partial differential equations are derived, which describe the out-of-plane and in-plane bending, extensional and torsional motions. The natural frequencies are calculated from the linearized equations at various rotational speeds. Finally, the computation results from three non-linear models are compared with those from a linear model. Based on the comparison, this study recommends which model is appropriate to describe the non- linear behavior more precisely.

  • In this paper, we present the principle of virtual work, from which the exact non-linear equations of motion of a rotating ring can be derived, by using the theory of finite deformation. For a thin ring of which the effect of variation in curvature across the cross-section is neglected, the radial displacement and the extensional stress are determined from the principle of virtual work at the steady state where the ring is rotating with a constant angular velocity. And also we formulate systematically the governing equations concerned to the in-plane vibrations and the out-of-plane vibrations at the disturbed state by using the principle of virtual work which is expressed with the disturbed displacements about the steady state. The formulated governing equations are classified by four models along the cases of considering or neglecting all or partly the secondary effects of flexural shear, rotary inertia, circumferential extension, and twist inertia. The natural vibrations of thin rings are analyzed, and its results are compared and discussed.

  • As a major component of a power plant, a turbine generator must have sufficient reliability. Longer blades have lower natural frequency, thereby requiring that the design of the shaft and blade takes into account the coupling of the blade vibration mode, nodal diameter k=0 and k=1 with vibration of the shaft. The present work analyzes the coupling of the translation motion of the shaft with in-plane vibration of the blades with k=1 modes. At a rotational speed ${\Omega}_1=|{\omega}_s-{\omega}_b|$, the resonance of the blades has a relatively large amplitude. A violent coupled resonance was observed at a rotational speed ${\Omega}_2=|{\omega}_s+{\omega}_b|$. Resonance in blade vibration at ${\Omega}_1=|{\omega}_s-{\omega}_b|$ was experimentally confirmed.

  • In this paper, we present the equations of motion by which the natural vibration of a rotating annular disk can be accurately analyzed. These equations are derived from the theory of finite deformation and the principle of virtual work. The radial displacements of annular disk which is rotating at constant angular velocity are determined by non-linear equations formulated using 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction. The equations of the in-plane vibrations at disturbed state are also formulated using 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction along the number of nodal diameters. They are expressed as in functions of the radial displacements at the steady state and the disturbed displacements about the steady state. In-plane static deformation modes of the annular disk are used as the interpolation functions of 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction. The natural vibrations of an annular disk with different boundary conditions are analyzed by using the presented model and the 3-dimensional finite element model to verify accuracy of the presented equations of motion. Its results are compared and discussed.

  • In order to analyze accurately the vibration of a structure by using the finite element method (FEM), we have to model a analytical structure as a numerical model with many degrees-of-freedom. However, in this case, the FEM needs much computation time and storage. The authors developed the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) for overcoming the drawback of the FEM. In this paper, the authors apply the FE-TSCM to the in-plane vibration analysis of general plates with various shapes. Two numerical examples, a rectangular plate and a triangular plate, are used to compare the results of the FE-TSCM and the FEM. Through the numerical calculation, we confirm that the FE-TSCM can be applied to the in-plane free or forced vibration analysis of the general plates with various shapes and is effective to in-plane vibration analysis of general plates.

  • The present work deals with obtaining the critical buckling load and the natural frequencies of clamped, orthotropic, rectangular thin plates subjected to different linear distributed in-plane forces. An analytical solution is proposed. Using the Ritz method, the dependence between in-plane forces and natural frequencies are estimated for various plate sizes, and some results are compared with finite element solutions and where possible, comparison is made with previously published results. Beam functions are used as admissible functions in the Ritz method.
