  • A new model which requires one branch of main curves for the model calibration is developed based on the assumption that the weighting factor accounting for the pore blockage effect against air entry, $P_a({\theta})$, in Mualem's Model III-1 has a linear relation to the dimensionless pore radius r. The proposed model simulates experimental data more accurately than existing models which require one branch of main curves for the model calibration. Previous study showed that Model III-1 is the most appropriate model among domain models which require two branches of main curves for the model calibration. In comparison of the proposed model with Model III-1, both simulate hysteresis curves with almost the same accuracy. The proposed model can be applied efficiently in analyzing the unsaturated flow.

  • Objective : To analyze the relationship of concomitant foraminallumbar disc herniation (FLDH) with postoperative leg pain after microdecompression for extraforaminallumbar disc herniation (EFLDH) at the L5-S1 level. Methods : Sixty-five patients who underwent microdecompression for symptomatic EFLDH at the L5-S1 level were enrolled, According to the severity of accompanying FLDH, EFLDH was classified into four categories (Class I : no FLDH; Class II : mild to moderate FLDH confined within a lateral foraminal zone; Class III : severe FLDH extending to a medial foraminal zone; Class IV : Class III with intracanalicular disc herniation). The incidence of postoperative leg pain, dysesthesia, analgesic medication, epidural block, and requirement for revision surgery due to leg pain were evaluated and compared at three months after initial surgery. Results : The incidences of postoperative leg pain and dysesthesia were 36.9% and 26.1%, respectively. Pain medication and epidural block was performed on 40% and 41.5%, respectively, Revision surgery was recommended in six patients (9.2%) due to persistent leg pain, The incidences of leg pain, dysesthesia, and requirement for epidural block were higher in Class III/IV, compared with Class I/II. The incidence of requirement for analgesic medication was significantly higher in Class III/IV, compared with Class I/II (p=0,02, odds ratio=9,82). All patients who required revision surgery due to persistent leg pain were included in Class III/IV. Conclusion : Concomitant FLDH seems related to postoperative residual leg pain after microdecompression for EFLDH at the L5-S1 level.

  • Recently, the researches for air pollutant control technologies have been performing in Korea, while considering an one of the latest main topics as problems on air pollutant control. However, it is difficult to investigate emission amount of air pollutant by passenger cars, because of lack of the domestic information about mobile source; the number of research institutes are less in the whole. Especially, the informations on registered numbers and emissions of motorcycles are less. Thus, in this study, the analysis that is based on experimental results was conducted for finding out source profiling and emission characteristics on motorcycles exhaust. For these experiments, the domestic motorcycles were chosen and evaluated by EURO III standard. From the result, controlled pollutants (CO, HC, NOx) were met to EURO III, but low displacement motorcycles showed a higher incomplete combustion reaction than that of 250 cc motorcycles. Additionally, uncontrolled pollutants (BTEX and 1,3-butadiene) were decreased with increasing a displacement of motorcycles. However, the emission trend of aldehydes was not followed that of those; the formaldehyde ratio increased upto approximately 33%, with increasing a displacement of motorcycles. In the future, it would be used to support the CAPSS as basic data of Korea.

  • Binary interactions may have significant impact on Pop III stellar evolution. Pop III single star evolution indicates that for primary masses less than $20M_{\odot}$, no significant binary mass transfer would occur before core helium exhaustion. We perform binary system evolution for various primary masses ($20M_{\odot}$ < $M_1$ < $60M_{\odot}$) and initial periods under same mass ratio $M_2/M_1=0.9$, and follow the evolution and mass transfer of the primary star. If binary mass transfer occurs during post main sequence, the primary star does not evolve into naked helium star and still contain significant hydrogen in the envelope. During the post mass transfer phase, the primary star evolves redward, and does not become sufficiently hot to enhance the number of ionizing photons, compared to the case of single star evolution for a given initial mass. This result implies that primary stars of massive Pop III binary systems would have little contribution to the reionization in the early universe. Given the large hydrogen content ($0.326-1.793M_{\odot}$), the primary stars that underwent stable mass transfers would explode as a Type IIb supernova, and it would be difficult for Pop III binary stars to produce Type Ib/c supernovae that look similar to those found in the local universe.

  • Solvent extraction experiments were carried out to recover and separate Ru(III) from aqueous hydrochloric acid media using TBP and Cyanex923. The efficiency of the extraction was studied under various experimental conditions, such as concentration of HCl and NaCl, concentration of extractant in the organic phase and temperature. The extraction behavior of metal impurities, such as Pt, Bi, Sn, Fe, Pb and Cu in mixed solutions was examined. From the experimental studies, it was found that the Cyanex923 resulted in higher extraction percentage of Ru than TBP. However TBP was more effective for the separation of Ru and Pt, Bi, Sn in mixed solutions than Cyanex923.

  • Database servers that are used to provide multimedia information services in World Wide Web(WWW) environment have to support the access control mechanism that allows authorized users to access the constructed databases. In this paper, we define an authorization model as well as authorization policies to enforce the proper access control on databases in the BADA-III object-oriented database server and propose an access evaluation algorithm. Also we implement this model and the algorithm in the BADA-III database server. Considering the service environment of the WWW, we expect that database service providers can simply and effectively protect their data using the proposed model.

  • Facilities with high risk of a disaster or requiring continuous safety management are designated as class-III facility. In order to designate a class-III facility, it is evaluated based on the safety status of the facility, the risk to the building users, and the number of years elapsed of the facility, etc. and this shall be referred to the actual condition survey for the designation of a class-III facility. In the actual condition survey conducted to designate the safety status is calculated by the checklist based on the evaluation scores consisting of five stages each item, and is evaluated in three stages by 'good', 'careful observation', and 'designated review' through the average of the combined scores. Currently, the actual condition survey being conducted applies only structural stability, and the risk factors such as damage to the finish, the risk of cracking, and the type and weight of major structures are not included in the checklist for the actual condition survey, so even if experts think it is dangerous, scores cannot be reflected. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the problems of checklist of the actual condition survey for the designation of class-III facility and to propose an improvement plan for the checklist for the actual condition survey.

  • The kinetics of ruthenium(III) chloride catalyzed oxidation of butanone and uncatalyzed oxidation of cyclohexanone by cerium(IV) in sulphuric acid medium have been studied. The kinetic rate law(I) in case of butanone conforms to the proposed mechanism. $$-\frac{1}{2}\frac{d[Ce^{IV}]}{dt}=\frac{kK[Ru^{III}][butanone]}{1+K[butanone]}$$ (1). However, oxidation of cyclohexanone in absence of catalyst accounts for the rate eqn. (2). $$-\frac{1}{2}\frac{[Ce^{IV}]}{dt}=\frac{(k_1+k_1K^'[H^+])[Ce^{IV}][Cyclohexanone]}{1+K_3[HSO_4^-]}$$ (2) Kinetics and activation parameters have been evaluated conventionally. Kinetically preferred mode of reaction is via ketonic and not the enolic forms.

  • Apolipophorin III (apoLp-III) is a protypical exchangeable apolipoprotein that is abundant in hemolymph of many insect species. Its function lies in the stabilization of low-density lipophorin particles (LDLp) crossing the hemocoel in phases of high energy consumption to deliver lipids from the fat body to the flight muscle cells. But, recent studies with naive Galleria mellonella-apoLp-III gave first indications of an unexpected role of that protein in insect immune activation (Niere et al., 1999). (omitted)
