We treat the problem of channel estimation and interference cancellation in multiuser ultra-wide-band (UWB) communication systems over multipath fading channels. The UWB system under consideration employs a random time-hopping impulse radio format. We develop a channel estimation method based on linear weighted algorithm. An iterative channel estimation and interference cancellation scheme is proposed to successively improve the receiver performance. We also consider systems employing multiple transmit and/or receive antennas. For systems with multiple receive antennas, we develop a diversity receiver for the wellseparated antennas. For systems with multiple transmit antennas, we propose to make use of Alamouti’s space-time transmission scheme, and develop the corresponding channel estimation and interference cancellation receiver techniques. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the performance of various UWB receiver techniques developed in this paper.

This paper describes a high data rate proximity transmitter design for high resolution smartphone-mirrored display applications. A 2 Gb/s transmitter is designed with a low transmission power of -70 dBm/MHz and a wide bandwidth of nearly 3 GHz. A digital pre-correction method is employed in the transmitter to mitigate the inter-symbol interference problem. A carrier-based digital pulse shaping and a reconfigurable digital envelope generation methods are employed for robust operation by utilizing 20 phases from a 2 GHz phase-locked loop. A 6.5-9.5 GHz transmitter implemented in 65 nm CMOS achieves the maximum data rate of 2 Gb/s, consuming only 7.6 mW from a 1 V supply.

In this paper, we introduce an low complexity and low power IR-UWB (impulse radio ultra wideband) baseband transceiver for wireless sensor network. The proposed baseband, implemented by TSMC 0.18um CMOS technology, has a simple structure in which a simplified packet structure and a digital synchronizer with 1-bit sampler to detect incoming pulses are used. Besides, clock gating method using gated clock cell as well as customized clock domain division can reduce the total power consumption drastically. As a result, the proposed baseband has about 23K digital gates with an internal memory of 2Kbytes and achieves about 1.8mW@1Mbps power consumption.

This work presents an Internet of Things (IoT) system for home energy management based on a custom-designed Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband (IR-UWB) transceiver that targets a generic and multi-standard control system. This control system enables the interoperability of heterogeneous devices: it integrates various sensor nodes based on ZigBee, EnOcean and UWB in the same middleware by utilizing an ad-hoc layer as an interface between the hardware and software. The paper presents as a first the design of the IR-UWB transceiver for a portable sensor node integrated with the middleware layer, and also describes the receiver connected to the control system. The custom-designed low-power transmitter on the sensor node is fabricated with 130 nm CMOS technology. It generates a signal with a 1.1 ns pulse width while consuming $39{\mu}W$ at 1 Mbps. The UWB sensor node with a temperature measurement capability consumes 5.31 mW, which is lower than the power level of state-of-the-art solutions for smart-home applications. The UWB hardware and software layers necessary to interface with the control system are verified in over-the-air measurements in an actual office environment. With the implementation of the presented sensor node and its integration in the energy management system, we demonstrate achievement of the broad flexibility demanded for IoT.

This paper has proposed a 3~5 GHz IR-UWB low power transmitter for range detection application. Proposed transmitter which has been implemented in a $0.13{\mu}m$ CMOS technology is all digital circuit that consist of simple digital logic. this feature insure low complexity and low power consumption. In addition, center frequency can be changed by adopting voltage controlled delay cell for avoiding existing another radio frequency in UWB low band. Proposed circuit consume only 10pJ/b from 1.2 V supply voltage. The simulation results show 3.3~4.3 GHz center frequency controllability, -51 dBm/MHz maximum output power and is satisfied with FCC regulation.

This paper presents a novel respiration rate estimation method based on joint amplitude and time of arrival (TOA) using impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar signals. Through analysis of the affect of body-rocking, it is shown that body-rocking information does not distort the respiration rate and exists at integer multiples of the body-rocking rate from the respiration rate. Based on the analysis, the convolution of the temporal sequence of the maximum amplitude and that of the TOA is proposed. The analysis results show that the frequency components of respiration are improved more than 10dB compared with those obtained using other existing methods.

This paper presents a novel apnea detection and respiration rate estimation method using impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar. The proposed method utilizes amplitude, time of arrival, and power in the selected band. The experimental results show that respiration rate can be estimated accurately using proposed method. And, it is shown that the selectivity between apnea and respiration can be improved more than 50 dB using the proposed method.
A new modulation scheme called multicoded-pulse position modulation (MC-PPM) is proposed for an ultrawideband (UWB) impulse radio communication system. The multicoded signal is generated by using several orthogonal codes for transmitting data simultaneously. Then, each multi-level value of the multicoded signal is converted to pulse position which results in not only an improved data rate, but also a processing gain in reception, delivering the power-efficient benefit of PPM and guaranteeing the low pulse energy for UWB systems. We notice that the modulation of multi-level values of the multicoded signal to pulse position is more efficient in terms of achievable data rate than the modulation of transmitting data based on other PPM schemes within given bandwidth and pulse energy. Therefore, as a performance measure, we focus on the achievable data rate (link capacity) of the proposed scheme and analyze it theoretically. Through simulation, we compare the link capacity of the MC-PPM scheme and other PPM schemes, such as M -ary PPM and multiple PPM. With the fixed bandwidth and same pulse energy condition, the UWB system based on the proposed MC-PPM scheme shows good link capacity and an increased data rate as L increases, which is contrary to other PPM schemes.

A fully integrated single ended IR-UWB receiver is implemented using 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The UWB receiver adopts the non-coherent architecture, which simplifies the RF architecture and reduces power consumption. The receiver consists of single-ended 2-stage LNAs, S2D, envelope detector, VGA, and comparator. The measured results show that sensitivity is -80.8 dBm at 1 Mbps and BER of $10^{-3}$. The receiver uses no external balun and the chip size is only $1.8{\times}0.9$ mm. The consumed current is very low with 13 mA at 1.8 V supply and the energy per bit performance is 23.4 nJ/bit.

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a noncoherent OOK (On-Off Keying) UWB (Ultra Wide Band) system based on power detection with noise power calibration and noise power windowing for ubiquitous sensor network applications in typical indoor wireless channels. Utilizing noise power calibration and noise power windowing, the current noise information can be initially or adaptively provided to determine suitable detection threshold value for signal demodulation. Simulation results show that the noncoherent OOK UWB system using noise power calibration achieves good BER (Bit Error Rate) performance which is favorably comparable to that of the system using the ideal adaptive threshold, while maintaining simple receiver structure. However, despite the serious loss of the data transmission rate, the performance improvement by noise power windowing is not so remarkable. furthermore, these performance results are similarly maintained in BEE 802.15 Task Group 3a UWB indoor channel model, and it is also revealed that the BER performance can be significantly improved by increasing the pulse repetition rate.
