  • In Korean coastal areas, land reclamations are main development projects that should be based on environmental impact assessment(EIA), because those human interventions can change coastlines, damage tidal flats, and pollute adjacent areas to threat seafood safety and devaluate overall ecosystem service value. Existing procedures of the EIA for land reclamation projects were diagnosed and evaluated to enhance them. Problems were identified in the designation of survey areas, the consistency in survey sites and periods, the standardization of survey methods and reports, the confidence of survey results and the verification of predictions. Lack of integration was noticeable and could be improved by synthesizing different assessments from topography geography, marine physics, marine chemistry and marine biology. We suggest that successful precautionary marine environment management requires readjusting the cost of EIA, recruiting experts in marine environment, constructing database and establishing specialized assessment system.

  • In this study, comparison of theoretical solutions with experimental results is examined through fracture conditions for the case of float glasses subjected static loading. The range of fracture generation limits and critical penetration energies are solved according to the impactor mass under the high velocity, and analytical method of fracture strength and penetration strength are presented. Also, fracture patterns are investigated according to impact velocities. The results obtained from this study are as follows ; 1) Radial cracks are generated from the loading point regardless of plate thickness in the case of the plate subjected to the static loading. In the case of high-speed impact, dimensions of ring cracks become to smaller and length of radial cracks becomes shorter with the rapidity of impact velocity. 2) Kinetic change volume of collision after/before is constant regardless of velocities over the range of critical penetration velocity. 3) Although the same impact energy is working, the critical penetration energy is increased with the shorter of impactor mass. 4) Although the same impact energy is working, the penetration fracture of lighter Impactor mass is generated more than that of heavier impactor mass, and the impulse of lighter impacter mass appear more than that of heavier impactor mass. Therefore, the penetration fracture in the case of greater impulse is generated earlier regardless of the of the dimensions of Impact loading.

  • The structural integrity of a dual-purpose metal cask currently under development by the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) was evaluated, through numerical simulations and a model test, under high-speed missile impact reflecting targeted aircraft crash conditions. The impact conditions were carefully chosen through a survey on accident cases and recommendations from literature. In the impact scenario, a missile flying horizontally hits the top side of the cask, which is freestanding on a concrete pad, with a velocity of 150 m/s. A simplified missile simulating a commercial aircraft engine was designed from an impact loade-time function available in literature. In the analyses, the dynamic behavior of the metal cask and the integrity of the containment boundary were assessed. The simulation results were compared with the test results for a 1:3 scale model. Although the dynamic behavior of the cask in the model test did not match exactly with the prediction from the numerical simulation, other structural responses, such as the acceleration and strain history during the impact, showed very good agreement. Moreover, the containment function of the cask survived the missile impact as expected from the numerical simulation. Thus, the procedure and methodology adopted in the structural numerical analyses were successfully validated.

  • The Korean New Car Assessment Program (KNCAP) is a program to evaluate the safety of automobiles. In the safety assessment method, there are frontal collision, partial frontal collision, side collision, pillar collision, and left stability in the collision safety category. Among them, Korean in-depth analysis data shows that there are a lot of side collision accidents and it is necessary to protect them. This study will analyze the side collision accident that occurred in actual traffic accident based on Korea In-Depth Accident Study (KIDAS) and investigate the effect of center airbag on passenger in under side collision. In addition, with simulated side collision scenarios in the various side impact directions, it was investigated how the center airbag affects the driver and passenger in terms of kinematic and injury levels.

  • In this study, we adopt the strength variation (equation omitted) of electromagnetic waves by their distance. The location of antenna emitting electromagnetic waves is moved to its opposite side and the distance between human body and antenna is secured more. Therefore, the cellular phone designed in this study can reduce the impact of electromagnetic waves absorbed in local part of human body (in particular, head) and then can have competitiveness in the world market facing the regulations.

  • Experimental studies were performed to investigate the injury potential of BB pellets through gelatine based simulants. In order to record BB pellet movements penetrating into the target simulant, a high-speed video camera was used. In this study the first investigation involved the effects on concentrations, homogeneity and gelation times of the gelatine simulant. The second investigation involved the penetration depth of the pellets to the simulant by different distances between the BB gun and the simulant. The final one is associated with impact velocity, threshold velocity and penetration depth of the pellets by different kinetic energies of the BB gun. Results provided the basis in assessing the injury potential of BB pellets.
