Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the volumetric characteristics of mucous retention cysts(MRCs) in the maxillary sinus and to analyze potential associations of MRCs with dentoalveolar pathologies. Materials and Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans exhibiting bilateral maxillary sinuses that were acquired from January 2016 to February 2019 were initially screened. A total of 227 scans(454 sinuses) that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included. The presence, location, and volumetric characteristics of the diagnosed MRCs were evaluated on CBCT images using the 3D-Slicer software platform. The presence of MRCs was correlated with potential influencing factors including age, sex, and dentoalveolar pathology. For MRCs located on the sinus floor, factors with a potential impact on the volume, surface, and diameter were analyzed. Results: An MRC was present in 130 (28.6%) of the 454 sinuses. Most MRCs were located on the sinus walls and floor. The mean MRC volume, surface, and diameter were 551.21±1368.04 mm3, 228.09±437.56 mm2, and 9.63±5.40 mm, respectively. Significantly more sinuses with associated endodontically treated teeth/periapical lesions were diagnosed with an MRC located on the sinus floor. For MRCs located on the sinus floor, endodontic status exhibited a significant association with increased volume, surface, and diameter. Conclusion: Periapical lesions might be a contributing factor associated with the presence and volume of MRCs located on the sinus floor. The 3D-Slicer software platform was found to be a useful tool for clinicians to analyze the size of MRCs before surgical interventions such as sinus floor elevation procedures.

The size of an optical surface can significantly affect the performance of an optical system, and high spatial frequency errors have a greater impact. Therefore, it is crucial to measure the surface figure error with high frequency. To address this, a new method called rotational prism stitching interferometer (RPSI) is proposed in this study. The RPSI is a type of stitching interferometer that enhances spatial resolution, but it differs from conventional stitching interferometers in that it does not require the movement of either the mirror tested or the interferometer itself to obtain sub-aperture interferograms. Instead, the RPSI uses a beam expander and a rotating Dove prism to select particular sub-apertures from the entire aperture. These sub-apertures are then stitched together to obtain a full-aperture result proportional to the square of the beam expander's magnification. The RPSI's effectiveness was demonstrated by measuring a 40 mm diameter spherical mirror using a three-magnification beam expander and comparing the results with those obtained from a commercial interferometer. The RPSI achieved surface testing results with nine times higher sampling density than the interferometer alone, with a small difference of approximately 1 nm RMS.

Scanning white-light interferometry is an important measurement option for many surfaces. However, serious profile measurement errors can be present when measuring free-form surfaces being highly curved or tilted. When the object surface slope is not zero, the object and reference rays are no longer common path and optical aberrations impact the measurement. Aberrations mainly occur at the beam splitter in the interference objective and from misalignment in the optical system. Both effects distort the white-light interference signal when the surface slope is not zero. In this paper, we describe a modified version of white-light interferometry for eliminating these measurement errors and improving the accuracy of white-light interferometry. Moreover, we report systematic errors that are caused by optical aberrations when the object is not flat, and compare our proposed method with the conventional processing algorithm using the random ball test.

This paper describes the test results and nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete T-beams strengthened by bonded steel plates under increasing static loading conditions. The first part of this paper discusses the flexural tests on five T-beams, including the test model design (based on similarity principles), test programs, and test procedure. The second part discusses the nonlinear numerical analysis of the strengthened beams, in which a concrete damage plasticity model and a cohesive behavior were adopted. The numerical analysis results are compared with experimental data and show good agreement. The area of bonded steel plate and the anchor bolt spacing were found to have an impact on the cracking load, yield load, and ultimate load. An increase in the area of steel plate and a reduction of the anchor spacing could significantly improve the cracking and ultimate loads and decrease the damage of the beam.

Subsets pipelines are exposed to several potential risks of damage due to corrosion, soil instability, anchor impact and other hazards. One of the main risk factors for the safety of a subsea pipeline is its free spanning. This paper examines the safety of subsea pipelines with free span under axial compressive load. The variation of allowable lengths of dynamic free span is examined for generalized boundary conditions. The free span is modelled as a beam with an elastic foundations and the boundary condition is replaced by linear and rotational springs at each end. A dynamic free span curve is obtained with a function of non-dimensional parameters and can be used usefully for the design of subsea pipelines with a free span. A case study is carried out to introduce the application method of the curve.

Recently, UV pulse laser is widely used in micro machining of the research, development and industry field of IT, NT and BT products because the laser short wavelength provides not only micro drilling, micro cutting and micro grooving which has a very fine line width, but also high absorption coefficient which allows a lot of type of materials to be machined more easily. To analyze the dynamic deformation during a very short processing time, which is nearly about several tens nanoseconds, the commercial Finite Element Analysis (FEA) code, LS-DYNA 3D, was employed for the computitional simulation of the UV laser micro machining behavior for thin copper material in this paper. A finite element model considering high strain rate effect is especially suggested to investigate the micro phenomena which are only dominated by mechanically pressure impact in disregard of thermally heat transfer. From these computational results, some of dynamic deformation behaviors such as dent deformation shapes, strains and stresses distributions were observed and compared with previous experimental works. These will help us to understand micro interaction between UV laser beam and material.
In recent years, polymer concrete based on polyester resin have been widely generalized and the research of polymer concrete have been actively pursued by the technical innovations. Polymer concrete is a composite consisting of aggregates and an organic resin binder that hardens by polymerization. Polymer concrete are stronger by a factor of three or more in compression, a factor of four to six in tension and flexural and a factor of two in impact when compared with portland cement concrete. In view of the growing use of polymer concrete, it is important to study the physical characteristics of the material, emphasizing the short term properties as well as long term mechanical behavior. If polymer concrete is to be used in flexural load-bearing application such as in beam, it is imperative to understand the deformation of the material under sustained loading conditions. This study is proposed to empirical and mechanical model of polymer concrete tension creep using long-term experimental results and mathematical development. The test results showed that proposed model has been used successfully to predict creep deformations at a stress level that was 20 percent of the ultimate strength and viscoelastic behavior of recycled-PET polymer concrete is linear of stress level up to 30 percent. It is expected that the present model allows more realistic evaluation of varying stresses in polymer concrete structures with a constant loading.
Thin-walled mental tubes under lateral crushing are desirable and reliable energy absorbers against impact or blast loads. However, the early formations of plastic hinges in the thin cylindrical wall limit the energy absorption performance. This study investigates the energy absorption performance of a simple, light and efficient energy absorber called the ring stiffened tube. Due to the increase of section modulus of tube wall and the restraining effect of the T-stiffener flange, key energy absorption parameters (peak crushing force, energy absorption and specific energy absorption) have been significantly improved against the empty tube. Its potential application in the offshore blast wall design has also been investigated. It is proposed to replace the blast wall endplates at the supports with the energy absorption devices that are made up of the ring stiffened tubes and springs. An analytical model based on beam vibration theory and virtual work theory, in which the boundary conditions at each support are simplified as a translational spring and a rotational spring, has been developed to evaluate the blast mitigation effect of the proposed design scheme. Finite element method has been applied to validate the analytical model. Comparisons of key design criterions such as panel deflection and energy absorption against the traditional design demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design in blast alleviation.
Accurate modeling of contact interface in bolted joints is crucial in predicting the dynamic behavior for bolted assemblies under external load. This paper presents a contact pressure distribution based non-uniform virtual material method to describe the joint interface of assembly structure, which is connected by sparsely distributed multi-bolts. Firstly, the contact pressure distribution of bolted joints is obtained by the nonlinear static analysis in the finite element software ANSYS. The contact surface around bolt hole is divided into several sub-layers, and contact pressure in each sub-layer is thought to be evenly. Then, considering multi-asperity contact at the micro perspective, the relationship between contact pressure and interfacial virtual material parameters for each sub-layer is established by using the fractal contact theory. Finally, an experimental platform for the dynamic characteristics testing of a beam lap structure with double-bolted joint is constructed to validate the efficiency of proposed method. It is found that the theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental results by impact response in both time- and frequency-domain, and the relative errors of the first four natural frequencies are less than 1%. Furthermore, the presented model is used to examine the effect of rough contact surface on dynamic characteristics of bolted joint.

Various computer-based simulation tools such as 3D-CAD and CAE systems are widely used to design automotive body structure at the early phase of design. Designers must search the optimal solution that satisfies a number of performance requirements by using their tools and a trial-and-error approach. In the previous three reports, a set-based design approach has been proposed for achieving design flexibility and robustness while capturing designer's preference, and its effectiveness has been illustrated with a simple side-door impact beam design problem and real vehicle side-door structure design. This report presents the development of integrated 3D-CAD and CAE system, and the applicability of our proposal for obtaining the multi-objective satisfactory design solutions by applying to an automotive front-side frame.
