  • Purpose: Underlying bone sclerosis is frequently observed in clinical settings when oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) invades the jaw bone. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and characteristics of underlying bone sclerosis in patients with OSCC. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the computed tomographic (CT) images of 131 patients who underwent mandibulectomy between January 2012 and December 2015 to treat OSCC. The presence, degree, and extent of underlying bone sclerosis were assessed on CT images and correlated with the following imaging patterns of bone invasion: cortical invasion, medullary invasion with a smooth margin, and medullary invasion with an irregular margin. The chi-square test was used to determine the relationships between the variables. Results: The prevalence of underlying bone sclerosis on CT images was 70.1% (47 of 67). The prevalence was 85.7% (42 of 49) in patients with medullary invasion, but it was 27.8% (5 of 18) in patients with only cortical invasion, indicating a significant increase in the prevalence of underlying bone sclerosis in patients with medullary invasion (P<.05). Aggressive patterns of bone invasion were associated with increases in the degree and extent of the underlying bone sclerosis(P<.05). Conclusion: More than two-thirds of OSCC cases with bone invasion showed underlying bone sclerosis. On CT images, reactive sclerosis in the remaining margin of the alveolar bone should not be used as the primary means to differentiate periodontal inflammatory lesions from those resulting from OSCC.

  • Purpose : This study was performed to compare the diagnostic ability of conventional intraoral radiographs with that of digital subtraction image and to assess the quantifying ability of digital subtraction image for simulated apical root resorption Materials and Methods : Conventional intraoral radiographs and digital images of ten sound maxillary central incisors and those with simulated apical root resorption were taken with varying horizontal and vertical angulations of the x-ray beam. The diagnostic accuracy to detect the lesion was evaluated on conventional intraoral radiographs and digital subtraction images by ROC analysis. The amount of simulated apical root resorption was also estimated on the reconstruction images by Emago/sup (R)/ and compared with actual amount of tooth loss using paired t-test. Results: The diagnostic accuracy of conventional intraoral radiographs to detect the apical root resorption was low (ROC area = 0.6446), and the sensitivity and the specificity of digital subtraction images were 100%, respectively. The calculated amounts of apical root resorption showed no statistically significant difference with the actual amounts of the lesion (p>0.05). Conclusion: Digital subtraction radiography is powerful tool to detect the small apical root resorption, and quantitative analysis of small amounts of the lesion can be evaluated by digital subtraction radiography.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the impacts of adolescents' body images, attachment to parents, attachment to peers, and resilience on life satisfaction. The participants were 1449 adolescents selected from six junior-high schools. T-tests and stepwise multiple regression were conducted for data analysis. Major findings of this study were as follows: 1) There were gender differences in body images, peer attachment, and life satisfaction. 2) Adolescents' body images and degree of resilience were significant predictors of life satisfaction. 3) Attachment to parents was a significant predictor of life satisfaction, but peer attachment was not significant.

  • In this paper, we describe an error concealment techniques based on image inpainting for the image impairments due to the packet loss. Image inpainting is to remove or restore the damaged sections from the images, which is usually old images, paintings, or video films. Inpainting has a long history which goes back to the era when the paintings come out. Manual inpainting is no more used, and we can use digital inpainting for the digitally impaired images and video sequences. In this paper, we review the error concealment techniques for the packet loss recovery and propose our inpainting based image impairment recovery scheme for video communication over packet networks.

  • The volume holographic memory system suffers from the crosstalk noise. We study use of error correction coding(ECC) and angular multiplexing for digital holographic memory(DHM) system. The analog image is encoded to binary images by ECC. Binary images are stored using angular multiplexing in DHM. The retrieved binary images are decoded by ECC. The bit error-rate is measured for perspective of the DHM system.

  • With advancements in satellite technology, interest in target detection and identification is increasing quantitatively and qualitatively. Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) images, which can be acquired regardless of weather conditions, have been applied to various areas combined with machine learning based detection algorithms. However, conventional studies primarily focused on the detection of stationary targets. In this study, we proposed a method to identify moving targets using an algorithm that integrates sub-aperture SAR images and cosine similarity calculations. Utilizing a transformer-based deep learning target detection model, we extracted the bounding box of each target, designated the area as a region of interest (ROI), estimated the similarity between sub-aperture SAR images, and determined movement based on a predefined similarity threshold. Through the proposed algorithm, the quantitative evaluation of target identification capability enhanced its accuracy compared to when training with the targets with two different classes. It signified the effectiveness of our approach in maintaining accuracy while reliably discerning whether a target is in motion.

  • This study analyzed the visual images covering 'the changes of weather' in elementary science textbooks by 2007 curriculum revision from a perspective of linguistics. The findings showed that there were inclined to increasing in terms of ideational and textual metafunctions. It meant that the informative images were increased and the form of images became more abstractive. It also showed an increase in terms of interpersonal metafunctions. It was interpreted as decreasing the ratios of images inducing epistemological detachments and increasing images help familiarity and involvement between images and readers. These results showed that the visual images of 'the changes of weather' in 2007 revised elementary science textbook were professionally, technical, and abstractive in terms of the contents and formality. And these trends of images were complemented by the involvement and familiarity of images in the aspect of interpersonal metafunctions.

  • The coefficients of variation obtained from three typical vegetation indices of eight levels of multi-spatial resolution images in urban areas were employed to identify the optimum spatial resolution in terms of maintaining information quality. These multi-spatial resolution images were prepared by degrading 1 meter simulated, 16 meter ADEOS/AVNIR, and 30 meter Landsat-TM images. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Perpendicular Vegetation Index (PVI) and Soil Adjusted Ratio Vegetation Index (SARVI) were applied to reduce data redundancy and compare the characteristics of multi-spatial resolution image of vegetation indices. The threshold point on the curve of the coefficient of variation was defined as the optimum resolution level for the analysis with multi-spatial resolution image sets. Also, the results from the image segmentation approach of region growing to extract man-made features were compared with these multi-spatial resolution image sets.

  • In this paper, a 3D coordinates acquisition method for a mechanical assembly is developed by using multiview X-ray images. The multi-view X-ray images of an object are obtained by a rotary table. From the rotation transformation, it is possible to obtain the 3D coordinates of corresponding edge points on multi-view X-ray images by triangulation. The edge detection algorithm in this paper is based on the attenuation characteristic of the X-ray. The 3D coordinates of the object points are represented on a graphic display, which is used for the inspection of a mechanical assembly.
