  • This paper presents a new indexing technique, for the fast content-based image browsing and retrieval in a database. By applying the rosette pattern that has more sample lines in the vicinity of center than those m the outer parts, we can get global gray distribution features as well as local positional information. These features are transformed into histogram and used as database indices. From the simulation results, the proposed method clearly shows the validity and the efficiency in respect of memory space as well as a good retrieval performance.

  • In this paper, we present an image retrieval method for improving retrieval performance by fusion of probabilistic method and query point movement. In the proposed algorithm, the similarity for probabilistic method and the similarity for query point movement are fused in the computation of the similarity between a query image and database image. The probabilistic method used in this paper is suitable for handling negative examples. On the other hand, query point movement deals with the statistical property of positive examples. Combining these two methods, our goal is to overcome their shortcoming. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields better performances over the probabilistic method and query point movement, respectively.

  • This paper proposes an efficient photo retrieval system that automatically indexes for searching of relevant images, using a combination of geo-coded information, direction/location of image capture device and content-based visual features. A photo image is labeled with its GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates and direction of the camera view at the moment of capture, and the label leads to generate a geo-spatial index with three core elements of latitude, longitude and viewing direction. Then, content-based visual features are extracted and combined with the geo-spatial information, for indexing and retrieving the photo images. For user's querying process, the proposed method adopts two steps as a progressive approach, filtering the relevant subset prior to use a content-based ranking function. To evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, we assess the simulation performance in terms of average precision and F-score, using a natural photo collection. Comparing the proposed approach to retrieve using only visual features, an improvement of 20.8% was observed. The experimental results show that the proposed method exhibited a significant enhancement of around 7.2% in retrieval effectiveness, compared to previous work. These results reveal that a combination of context and content analysis is markedly more efficient and meaningful that using only visual feature for image search.

  • Symmetry is easily found in animals and plants as well as in artificial structures. It is useful not only for human cognitive process but also for image understanding by computer. Application areas include face detection and recognition, indexing of image database, image segmentation and detection, and analysis of medical images. The method used in this paper extracts edges, and the perpendicular bisector of any pair of selected edge points is considered to be a candidate axis of symmetry. The coefficients of the perpendicular bisectors are accumulated in the coefficient space. Axis of symmetry is determined to be the line for which the histogram has maximum value. This method shows good results, but the usefulness of the method is restricted because the amount of computation increases proportional to the square of the number of edges. In this paper, an acceleration method is proposed which performs $2^{2n}$ times faster than the original one. Experiment on 20 test images shows that the proposed method using level-3 image segmentation performs 63.9 times faster than the original method.

  • Tables and figures in academic literature contain important and valuable information. Tables and figures represent the essence of the refined study, which is the closest to the raw dataset. If so, can researchers easily access and utilize these image data through the search system? In this study, we try to identify user perceptions and needs for image data through user and case studies. Through this study we also explore expected effects and utilizations of image search systems. It was found that the majority of researchers prefer a system that combines table and figure indexing functions with traditional search functions. They valued the provision of an advanced search function that would allow them to limit their searches to specific object types (pictures and tables). Overall, researchers discovered many potential uses of the system for indexing tables and figures. It has been shown to be helpful in finding special types of information for teaching, presentation, research and learning. It should be also noticed that the usefulness of these systems is highest when features are integrated into existing systems, seamlessly link to fulltexts, and include high-quality images with full captions. Expected effects and utilizations for user-centered image search systems are also discussed.

  • Region-based image retrieval techniques, which divide image into similar regions having similar characteristics and examine similarities among divided regions, were proposed to support an efficient low-dimensional color indexing scheme. However, color image segmentation techniques are required additionally. The problem of segmentation is difficult because of a large variety of color and texture. It is known to be difficult to identify image regions containing the same color-texture pattern in natural scenes. In this paper we propose an automatic color image segmentation algorithm. The colors in each image are first quantized to reduce the number of colors. The gray level of image representing the outline edge of image is constructed in terms of Fisher's multi-class linear discriminant on quantized images. The gray level of image is transformed into a binary edge image. The edge showing the outline of the binary edge image links to the nearest edge if disconnected. Finally, the final segmentation image is obtained by merging similar regions. In this paper we design and implement a region-based image retrieval system using the proposed segmentation. A variety of experiments show that the proposed segmentation scheme provides good segmentation results on a variety of images.

  • Scene change detection algorithm, which is very important preprocessing technique for video indexing and retrieval and determines the performance of video database system, is being studied widely. In this paper, we propose a more effective abrupt scene change detection, which is robust to large motion, sudden change of light and successive abrupt shot transitions rapidly. And we also propose a new gradual scene change detection algorithm, which can detect dissolve, and fade in/out precisely. Furthermore, we also propose a representative frame extraction algorithm which performs content-based video summary by novel DCT DC image buffering technique and accumulative histogram intersection measure (AHIM).

  • In this paper, we propose the region-based image retrieval method using JSEG which is a method for unsupervised segmentation of color-texture regions. JSEG is an algorithm that discretizes an image by color classification, makes the J-image by applying a region to window mask, and then segments the image by using a region growing and merging. The segmented image from JSEG is given to a user as the query image, and a user can select a few segmented regions as the query region. After finding the MBR of regions selected by user query and generating the multiple window masks based on the center point of MBR, we extract the feature vectors from selected regions. We use the accumulated histogram as the global descriptor for performance comparison of extracted feature vectors in each method. Our approach fast and accurately supplies the relevant images for the given query, as the feature vectors extracted from specific regions and global regions are simultaneously applied to image retrieval. Experimental evidence suggests that our algorithm outperforms the recent image-based methods for image indexing and retrieval.

  • In this paper, we propose the novel video retrieval algorithm using non-parametric based motion classification in the shot-based video indexing structure. The proposed system firstly gets the key frame and motion information from each shot segmented by scene change detection method, and then extracts visual features and non-parametric based motion information from them. Finally, we construct real-time retrieval system supporting similarity comparison of these spatio-temporal features. After the normalized motion vector fields is created from MPEG compressed stream, the extraction of non-parametric based motion feature is effectively achieved by discretizing each normalized motion vectors into various angle bins, and considering a mean, a variance, and a direction of these bins. We use the edge-based spatial descriptor to extract the visual feature in key frames. Experimental evidence shows that our algorithm outperforms other video retrieval methods for image indexing and retrieval. To index the feature vectors, we use R*-tree structures.

  • Caption information in news videos can be useful for video indexing and retrieval since it usually suggests or implies the contents of the video very well. In this paper, a new algorithm for extracting and recognizing characters from news video is proposed, without a priori knowledge such as font type, color, size of character. In the process of text region extraction, in order to improve the recognition rate for videos with complex background at low resolution, continuous frames with identical text regions are automatically detected to compose an average frame. The image of the averaged frame is projected to horizontal and vertical direction, and we apply region filling to remove backgrounds to produce the character. Then, K-means color clustering is applied to remove remaining backgrounds to produce the final text image. In the process of character recognition, simple features such as white run and zero-one transition from the center, are extracted from unknown characters. These feature are compared with the pre-composed character feature set to recognize the characters. Experimental results tested on various news videos show that the proposed method is superior in terms of caption extraction ability and character recognition rate.
