  • The five spedes of genus Iksookimia from Korea were investigated by electron microscopes to clarify the adhesive membranes on zona radiata. In the late vitellogenic stage the adhesive membranes could be classified into three form as follows: 1) villous form of Iksookimia koreensis, I pumila, and I. hugowolfeldi, 2) cotton-shaped form of I. longicorpus, and 3) vine-shaped form of I. choii. And although I. koreensis, I pumila, and I. hugowolfeldi possessed the same villous form, It was evident that fine structure of the zona radiata varied according to spedes. The adhesive membranes and fine structures of zona radiata in Iksookimla showed a species specificity related to closely their habitats and spawning properties.

  • Egg development and early life history of Korean southern spine loach, Iksookimia hugowolfeldi, were observed in the present study. Eggs were obtained after injecting females with 0.5 mL/kg of Ovarprim. Eggs were artificially fertilized using the dry method in the laboratory. Number of spawned eggs were $1,933{\pm}530per$ individual. Mature eggs were slightly adhesive with light yellowish coloring, and they measured $1.35{\pm}0.03mm$ in diameter. Hatching of the embryo occurred 56 h (50%) after fertilization at water temperature $25^{\circ}C$, and newly hatched larvae were averaged of $5.6{\pm}0.18mm$ in total length. At 5 days after hatching, larvae averaged $7.8{\pm}0.31mm$ in total length and their yolk sacs had been completely absorbed. Beginning at 15 days after hatching, the fish entered the juvenile stage and reached $13.2{\pm}0.87mm$ in total length. At 100 days after hatching, the band patterns and external form of juvenile were similar to those of adults, and they averaged $49.2{\pm}4.29mm$ in total length.

  • The microhabitat of Iksookimia hugowolfeldi was surveyed in two sites, Geogeum Island and Jangheung. I. hugowolfeldi in Geogeum Island inhabits mainly pool. This water system consists of sand and cobble and has a shallow water (0.1~0.8 m depth) with slow currents (0.1 m/s). 0+ years old inhabits pool consist of sand and lives in a less than 0.3 m depth. I. hugowolfeldi in Jangheung population inhabits mainly pool consists of sand and cobble and lives in a shallow water (0.1~0.8 m depth) with slow currents (0.1 m/s) compared to the stream of Geogeum Island. With some different fish species, sympatric species collected at Geogeum Island and Jangheung population are 7 species in 4 family identically in the two sites.

  • The morphometry and morphology of the olfactory organ of the southern king spine loach Iksookimia hugowolfeldi were investigated by stereo microscopy and statistical analysis. Its external morphology consists of two holes, the anterior and posterior nostrils. The anterior nostril (0.35~0.53 mm in diameter) forms tubular process protruding vertically from each side of the snout. The posterior nostril (0.32~0.68 mm in major diameter) is a eye-like hole parallel to the skin. Internally, the rosette structure is set with 14 to 21 lamellae and medium raphe on the inner floor. In morphometry, its lamellar number (male vs. female; 18±1.8 vs. 17±1.6, P<0.05) and lamellar number to standard length ratio (24.2±1.3% vs. 21.7±2.5%, P<0.05) was larger in male than female. The lamellar number and standard length have high correlation in male (P<0.001) but not in female (P=0.170). It seems that such characteristics of the olfactory organ of I. hugowolfeldi are related to its bottom-dwelling life which digs and takes a rest under sand and sexual dimorphism by a distinct degree in olfactory dependence for reproduction of each sex.

  • The freshwater fish fauna for the whole water system of Geogeumdo Island was surveyed at a total 10 sites from March 2018 to February 2019. During the surveyed period, 13 species belonging to 5 families and 4 orders were collected. Cyprinidae (68.84%) and Gobiidae (18.21%) were the dominant family, and the dominant species was Zacco temminckii (53.71%), and the subdominant species was Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (10.78%). Kichulchoia brevifasciata (1.27%) that endangered species were found in this study, but the habitat was confirmed in one site in Sinpyeongcheon compared to previous literature. Three endemic species of Korea were found in this island such as Iksookimia hugowolfeldi (5.07%), Liobagrus somjinensis (2.99%) and K. brevifasciata (1.27%). According to analysis of fish community structure based on average diversity, evenness index, dominance and richness indices in Geogeumdo Island were 1.666, 0.649, 0.645 and 1.713, respectively.
