The Study on The Identification Model of Friend or Foe on Helicopter by using Binary Classification with CNN

  • There has been difficulties in identifying objects by relying on the naked eye in various surveillance systems. There is a growing need for automated surveillance systems to replace soldiers in the field of military surveillance operations. Even though the object detection technology is developing rapidly in the civilian domain, but the research applied to the military is insufficient due to a lack of data and interest. Thus, in this paper, we applied one of deep learning algorithms, Convolutional Neural Network-based binary classification to develop an autonomous identification model of both friend and foe helicopters (AH-64, Mi-17) among the military weapon systems, and evaluated the model performance by considering accuracy, precision, recall and F-measure. As the result, the identification model demonstrates 97.8%, 97.3%, 98.5%, and 97.8 for accuracy, precision, recall and F-measure, respectively. In addition, we analyzed the feature map on convolution layers of the identification model in order to check which area of imagery is highly weighted. In general, rotary shaft of rotating wing, wheels, and air-intake on both of ally and foe helicopters played a major role in the performance of the identification model. This is the first study to attempt to classify images of helicopters among military weapons systems using CNN, and the model proposed in this study shows higher accuracy than the existing classification model for other weapons systems.

  • 군용 IFF(Identification Friend or Foe)는 전자적인 수단으로 항공기와 군함 등에 암호화된 신호를 보내어 돌아오는 응답 신호의 여부로 그 항공기나 군함 등이 아군인지 적군인지 여부를 식별하는 장치를 말한다. 즉 IFF 송신기에서 송신한 암호를 상대 IFF 응답기에서 바르게 해석, 변조해서 보내게 되면 그 IFF를 갖고 있는 항공기 등을 아군이라고 판단하는 시스템이다.

  • In actual battlefield environment, IFF radar plays an important role in distinguishing friend or foe targets and assigning unique identification code to management. Performance of IFF radar is greatly affected by radio environment including atmosphere and terrain, target maneuvering and operation mode. In this paper, M&S tool is consisted of interrogator(IFF radar) and answering machine(target) for radar performance analysis. The wave propagation model using APM(Advanced Propagation Model) and radar actuator system were modeled by considering beam waveform of individual operation beam mode. Using this tool, IFF radar performance was analyzed through two experimental results. As a result, it is expected that performance of IFF radar can be predicted in the operational environment by considering target maneuvering and operation beam mode.

Airborne radio communications, navigation, and identification equipments are characterized by user's many quantitative and qualitative requirements. These equipment look like simple test and evaluation, but they have many complex factors.   • Active radar reflector may be less familiar, since their uses have been limited to military applications, especially the enhancement of the effective radar cross-sections of missile test range in the drone aircraft and missiles. Perhaps the most widely-blown applications of radar transponders are Identification Friend or Foe(IFF) and its civilian counterpart, secondary surveilliance radar for Air Traffic Control(ATC), and most recently, as Search And Rescue Transponder(SART) in the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System(GMDSS). Since it happens frequently accidents on the sea, the problems of the contamination more seriously considered. The conventional navigation buoy and utilities are not sufficient to maintain the safety of the sea and thus new structured concept must be considered. Therefore, this paper propose and implement the active radar reflector with a enhanced structure. The results are shown that the performance of the system is significantly improved comparing with the conventional utilities.

  • 본 논문에서는 차세대 무인 군사 로봇에 활용할 수 있는 적군 및 아군 식별 수단으로 군복의 색깔을 이용한 기법을 제안한다. 이 기법은 전장지역의 군사로봇이 할 수 있는 피아식별법 중에 하나로 로봇에 부착되어 있는 카메라 외에 추가적으로 가져야 하는 장비가 필요 없기 때문에 추가비용 없이 효과적으로 적군을 포착할 수 있다. 군복의 색깔 차이를 식별하기 위해서는 먼저 HOG(Histogram of Oriented Gradients) 기법을 이용하여 사람을 검출한 다음, 이후 검출된 사람영역에 대하여 인체 비율을 고려해서 추출한 상의 부분의 색깔 데이터를 받는다. 이때 색공간은 HSV 공간으로 하여 조명의 변화에 덜 민감하도록 하였다. 북한 군복 색깔 영역의 pixel들만 추출하여 이진화를 한 후, 상의 전체 픽셀에 대한 개수 비율을 계산한다. 비율이 임계값 보다 높을 경우 적으로 인식한다.

Analysis of Optimum Antenna Placement Considering Interference Between Airborne Antennas Mounted on UAV (무인항공기 탑재 안테나 간 간섭을 고려한 안테나 최적 위치 분석)

  • In this paper, the optimum antenna placement is analyzed by considering the interference between airborne antennas mounted on the unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV). The analysis is implemented by selecting the antennas that the distance and operational frequency band between airborne antennas is close to each other among the omni-directional antennas. The analyzed antennas are the control datalink, TCAS(Traffic Collision & Avoidance System), IFF(Identification Friend or Foe), GPS(Global Positioning System), and RALT(Radar ALTimeter) antennas. There are three steps for the optimum antenna placement analysis. The first step is selecting the antenna position having the optimum properties by monitoring the variation of radiation pattern and return loss by the fuselage of UAV after selecting the initial antenna position considering the antenna use, type, and radiation pattern. The second one is analyzing the interference strength between airborne antennas considering the coupling between airborne antennas, spurious of transmitting antenna, and minimum receiving level of receiving antenna. In case of generating the interference, the antenna position without interference is selected by analyzing the minimum separation distance without interference. The last one is confirming the measure to reject the frequency interference by the frequency separation analysis between airborne antennas in case that the intereference is not rejected by the additional distance separation between airborne antennas. This analysis procedure can be efficiently used to select the optimum antenna placement without interference by predicting the interference between airborne antennas in the development stage.

  • This study aims at providing a methodology for retaining international technology competitiveness, marketable industry, and sustainable promising technology in a field of new growth engine industry such as national unmanned aerial vehicle industry. We draw a result by analysing with tools such as KrKwic, Excel, NetMiner, presenting methods of a Social Network Analysis, sub-group analysis, and cognitive map analysis based on patent data in a field of unmanned aerial vehicle industry. As a result, some future promising technologies are prospected as what worths concentrated investment, such as 'pilot control tech', 'identification of friend or foe tech'.

  • In this paper, I present the design of Operational Flight Programs(OFPs) on a Multi-Core based Mission Computer(MC) for the optimized performance of the OFPs on Multi-Core based MC. The program assigned as tasks on Multi-Core environment can be scheduled by designing with the use of OpenMp, which is the standard for parallel programming. This paper also describes the differences between Multi-Core Program(MCP) on the technique and Single-Core Program(SCP) in terms of performance aspect. The new proposed design technique is applied to the Integrated Up-Front Control OFP(IUFC OFP) on General Processor Module where Multi-Core based. This paper describes the Multi-Core design technique for the optimized performance of the IUFC OFP, which display and control flight data(Navigation, Communication, Identification Friend or Foe) to pilot.
