  • BACKGROUND: Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) has been proposed for sustainable agriculture and food security in an agricultural ecosystem disturbed by climate change. However, scientific approaches to local agricultural ecosystems to realize CSA are rare. This study attempted to evaluate the weather condition, rice production, and greenhouse gas emissions from the rice cultivation in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do to fulfill CSA of the rice cultivation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Over the past 3 years (2017~2019), Chucheong rice cultivar yield and methane emissions were analyzed from the rice field plot (37°13'15"N, 127° 02'22"E) in the Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services located in Gisan-dong, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. Methane samples were collected from three automated closed chambers installed in the plot. The weather data measured through automatic weather station located in near the plot were analyzed. CONCLUSION(S): The rice productivity was found to vary with weather environment in the agricultural ecosystem. And methane emissions are high in a favorable weather condition for rice growth. Therefore, it is necessary to minimize the trade-off between the greenhouse gas emission target for climate change mitigation and productivity improvement for CSA in a local rice cultivation.

  • An agricultural drones are gradually increasing in utilization due to economic efficiency, and consist of a main frame in charge of flying spray system in charge of moving pesticide to control targets. Therefore, the environment and characteristics of crops should be considered when controlling pesticides using drones and conditions such as systematic flying altitude of flight, speed, and spray time should be changed accordingly. However, pest control work using agricultural drones has different spray effects depending on level the operation proficiency and spray impact. In addition, there are variations in operating standards and control efficiency for agricultural drones, which hinder the distribution of agricultural control drones in the field of pest control work. Therefore, this study attempts to identify the spraying characteristics of agricultural drones, apply the effective spraying time, interval and experimentally verify the system that can calculation of spray area compared to previous studies. Through this experimental verification, it is intended to apply the optimal control process by minimizing the obstacles to pest control work by applying the operation method and systematic figures to agricultural drones.

  • As the world population growth and economy develops, the importance of eco-friendly organic waste resource treatment and up-cycling increases. Black soldier fly (BSF) (Hermetia illucens) treats organic waste resources that allows it to be recycled as a feed resource. In this study, we analyzed the nutrients composition, amino acid, and fatty acids of BSF larvae fed three agricultural by-products, namely apple pomace, mandarin waste, and oriental melon waste (mainly generated in South Korea). The highest BSF larvae crude protein and amino acid content was obtained in those fed mandarin waste compared with the other two diets (apple pomace and oriental melon waste). BSF larvae fed apple pomace had the highest crude fat, fatty acid, and lauric acid content compared with the other BSF larvae. Furthermore, all crude protein and fat content of BSF larvae fed the three agricultural by-products exceed that of the original agricultural by-products.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the properness, effectiveness and sustainability on the large-scale environment-friendly agricultural districts (LEAD). For this, we survey 11 public officers who manage the LEAD. Most of them aware necessities of LEAD project. They have a higher satisfaction and think that the project affect ripple effect and contribution on environment-friendly agriculture. Main performance expected of the LEAD project is a spread of natural circulation agriculture in connection with cultivation and stockbreeding. For continuance of environment-friendly agriculture after the project, it is necessary to find markets of products. Also policy making related with environment-friendly agricultural technique is required. The results of this study show that the LEAD project need a modification based on field and change of agricultural issues.

  • Productivity and environmental conservation in nowadays trade-off and serious problem in agriculture. Precision farming is developing for solving the trade-off problem using systems approach and variable management. The systems approach is attributed to aiming at information-oriented agriculture, environmental-friendly sustainable agriculture, and complex system optimization . The variable management is composed of describing variability , variable-rate technology and decision support system. Three levels of technology development and three farming strategies are introduced for having a prospect. Describing the variability is the first step to promote it. Precision farming could be available for small scale farming as well as big scale farming. Paddy field precision farming will undergo in its distinctive way.

  • This study aims to explore field cases of social farming programs for the youth's rural in-migration and to suggest the political and practical directions of the initiative of social farming in Korea. Two cases of social farm were selected and one operators and two participants of each farm were interviewed. The results are as follows. First, the participants had a firm priority that social farming is based on farming activities and places, and recognized it as the practice of embracing socially vulnerable groups. Second, the hosts were running their social farms based on their own understanding of social farming, which turns out to show different characteristics of the program. Third, the participants joined the program with the motivation of having an experience of rural life, exploration of career paths, and a need a need of community settlement, restructuring their experiences. Based on these results, the direction of social farming for youth's rural in-migration was suggested.

  • This study explores the development process of an farmers' group in Asan City that now plays an important role in the development of organic farming of the region. While increase in income in general may be one of main purposes making farmers join or form a group, the farmers group in Asan, instead, has tried to form a cooperative of local organic farmers. In doing so, they experienced a lot of difficulties and leant by trial and error. As a result, the farmers' group has recently developed in terms of business and organisational growth. The growth is not merely due to the growth of organic food markets but also due to the strong internal ties and trust that made possible to expand into food processing as well as to do social and cultural activities fur the rural residents. It implies that trust and cooperative identity between farmers should be the most important thing to be locally embedded farmers groups in a specific region.

  • To address complex solutions to tack1e the cost rise with the increasing of the prices of crude oil, and to lower warming gas discharge in agricultural sector in line with the framework Convention on Climate Change, we need to net only develop the methods of simply reducing energy use ratio, but also effectively energize resources discharged in the course of agricultural production aimed at enabling repealed farming, and develop systems to reinvest such energy into agricultural production and apply them to actual farming. To that end, specifically, we need to reduce the energy cost in agricultural production, and produce and harness bio gas that makes it possible to stabilize the continued supply of energy. Thus, in this research, we seek to discuss energy use volume and warming gas discharge, and the characteristics of bio gas and its use methods alike, in agricultural sector, and thus present methods for environment-friendly and continual development in agriculture.

  • In this study, an analysis was performed using the growth data and environment data of Korean melon farmers to confirm the influence of environmental factors variables on fruit weight of Korean melon. The analysis results can be summarized as follows. First, it was confirmed that humidity and temperature were recognized as the most important factors among the core factors of korean melon farm production management. Second, The correlation analysis of fruit weight and environmental factors showed a statistically significant soil temperature, internal humidity. Third, The Pooled OLS model estimation results showed that the estimation coefficient for soil temperature is (-), and the estimation coefficient for soil temperature square is (+), indicating that optimal control temperature exists.

  • This study analyzes the impact of Import beer demand on Anti-Japanese sentiment. Recently anti-Japanese sentiment heightened by the media was found to be drastically reducing the consumption of Japanese beer in the domestic imported beer market. Thus, the study used the import demand function of imported beer to analyze the impact of the 'Priming Effect' on the consumption of imported beer by anti-national sentiment, indicating a significant drop in Japanese beer consumption in other countries. Therefore, this study used the imported beer import demand function by country to analyze the impact of the priming effect on imported beer consumption according to anti-national sentiment. As a result, in the case of imported beer consumption in other countries, it was estimated that indirect consumption substitution occurred considerably.
