  • This study aims to investigate the effects of literary texts as a teaching tool to enhance college students' English communicative competence both in linguistic aspects and affective ones. The control group used only the course book as study material, whereas the target group read four short stories along with it and engaged in a series of follow-up tasks. To measure their English competence, the researcher had both groups take a pre-test and a post-test, compared the results, and analyzed the data using SPSS. The study indicates that though the target students' post-test scores increased, the result failed in reaching a significant level. Nevertheless, reading and discussing literature facilitated the target students' affective aspects of communication. This article points out some other limitations of utilizing literary texts in language teaching and suggests the need for further research to deal with the issues.

  • The term project executed at the university is a learner-centered learning method in which students select their topics, draw up their plans, and produce results by themselves based on the content they have learned during the semester. Through the term-end project of the subjects relating software, students learn various techniques for the programming language and produce the outcomes of their project by the creative program development process. However, non-computer majors who take software course as liberal arts subjects have difficulty in understanding the programming language, so it is necessary to provide feedback from their professor for encouraging students in carrying out their projects smoothly. Therefore, a feedback method by the discussions between a professor and learners that can be applied to the term-end project of programming subject for the non-computer majors is proposed. The proposed method was apply to the actual term-end projects and the meaningful results were confirmed through the analysis of the project processes and outcomes.

  • This study was carried out to investigate effects of soil water content on growth and antioxidative enzymes activity of tomato seedlings during the nursery period. The water stress significantly damages morphological, physiological, and biochemical activities in plants. The seedlings planted with soil on the tray were irrigated and categorized into 3 groups with 30 g, 40 g, and 50 g of plant-soil weight. After then, the changes in weight of the soil and the seedling were measured evey 2 hours for 4 days and the leaf temperature was measured with the thermal-camera at the same time. The antioxidant enzymes were measured to determine the level of stress using all of the seedling samples. The result showed that the decrease of soil weight in the day time was faster than that in the night time, but there was no significant difference in the weight loss of the seedlings and soil among the groups. However, the group with 50 g of wight showed the highest SOD and POD contents. This is considered that the continuously wet soil on the root zone of the seedlings caused more stress for the seedlings. Therefore, it is concluded that the excess moisture content causes stress to stimulate the secretion of antioxidant enzymes, and the effect of stress is required to be analyzed comprehensively using environmental data and also the physiological data that are collected over a longer period.

  • In this study, a new experimental device was developed for measurement of the coefficient of kinetic friction using a photo gate timer system which have advantages of easy and accurate detection of motion. This device, consisting of a side air-guide track and a side friction-free glider, forces a friction sample to move in a straight line without producing unnecessary friction. The new device is compared to two conventional measuring methods of friction for four different friction samples: one is using a camera system and the other is using a force sensor. It is demonstrated that the developed friction device in this study is easier to operate and produces the most accurate and the least deviating results among them. On the basis of these results, we propose that friction experiment using the new friction device is included in general physics experiment, so that engineering students should have a chance to get correct understanding of classical mechanics including friction phenomenon.

  • We live in a global village that requires a language with a genuinely global status as a means of communication. During the twentieth century, English has clearly emerged as the lingua franca owing to both past British political imperialism and the more recent superpower status of the United States. Further contributing to world domination of the English language is the fact that the computer and Internet sprang from the US. Whether you like it or not, you are destined to learn English at least to some extent in order to live in this global village. For the last two decades, one of the most mistaken ideas a number of Korean English teachers have had is that speaking and listening are the primary forms of language, while reading and writing are secondary. In fact, reading is regarded as a skill of much consequence to us since it provides us with access to a huge quantity of information on the Internet, of which at least 80% is written in English. Writing, too, deserves a great deal of attention because we are increasingly called upon to use standard English expressions. As diligent learners of English, we had better not forget the place accorded to language not only as a medium for exchange and constructing information but as a tool for thinking. So we should try to think in English to the point where we have thinking-in-English as a habit, thereby leading to increased familiarity with the language. Such familiarity entails, above all, possessing a command of English.
