  • A flame detector responds either to radiant energy visible to the human eye or outside the range of human vision. Such a detector is sensitive to glowing embers, coals, or flames which radiate energy of sufficient intensity and spectral quality to actuate the alarm. An infra-red detectors can respond to the total IR component of the flame alone or in combination with flame flicker in the frequency range of 5 to 30 Hz. A major problem in the use of infrared detectors receiving total IR radiation is the possible interference of solar radiation in the infrared region. When detectors are located in places shielded from the sun, such as vaults, filtering or shielding the unit from the sun's rays is unnecessary. In this study, we proposed method for redue a false alarm with using filtering & sensor technology for distinguish of causes of raise a false alarm and pure flame.

  • An efficient calibration algorithm for mobile robot localization using infrared range finder is proposed. A calibration is important to guarantee the performance of other algorithms which use sensor data because it is pre-process. We experimentally found that the infrared range finder PBS-03JN has error characteristics depending on both distance and scan angle. After obtaining 2-D grid error characteristic data on distance and scan angle, we proposed a simple and efficient calibration algorithm with a 2-D piecewise linear function set. The performance of our proposed calibration algorithm is verified by experiments and simulation.

Heat Source Identification Technique of Aircraft and Flare using 2-color Detectable Infrared Sensors (복수 대역 감지 적외선 센서를 이용한 항공기와 플레어의 열원 식별 기술)

  • Present guided missiles are equipped with infrared seeker to find the infrared sources radiating from target plane and then chase, which results in an improvement of the hitting success rate when in striking target objects. To interrupt the chases from the guided missile, the target plane spreads the flare, avoiding the missile attracts. Our research is to develop a 2-color infrared identification technique to discern the flare and real thermal source from target plane. Considering flare radiation properties and EM atmosphere transmission rates, two channels were selected, in which main channel (MC) was in a range of 3.7 μm∼4.8 μm and auxiliary channel (AC) in 1.7 μm∼2.3 μm. A 2500K heat source was used for an artificial flare source, while a 570K heat source was utilized for airplane infrared source in experimental testing. Two infrared sensors detectable only at each chanel were employed in order to measure the voltage ratio from two channels, identifying the flare and real target plane via comparison the voltage ratio. Several experimental conditions were imported in order to prove that our proposed 2-color infrared identification technique is very efficient way to discern heat sources from aircraft and flare, demonstrating that our proposed technique is very promising means for our force’s InfraRed Counter Counter Measure (IRCCM) in order to countermeasure opposite force’s InfraRed Counter Measures (IRCM).

Performance Analysis of Object Detection Neural Network According to Compression Ratio of RGB and IR Images (RGB와 IR 영상의 압축률에 따른 객체 탐지 신경망 성능 분석)

  • Most object detection algorithms are studied based on RGB images. Because the RGB cameras are capturing images based on light, however, the object detection performance is poor when the light condition is not good, e.g., at night or foggy days. On the other hand, high-quality infrared(IR) images regardless of weather condition and light can be acquired because IR images are captured by an IR sensor that makes images with heat information. In this paper, we performed the object detection algorithm based on the compression ratio in RGB and IR images to show the detection capabilities. We selected RGB and IR images that were taken at night from the Free FLIR Thermal dataset for the ADAS(Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) research. We used the pre-trained object detection network for RGB images and a fine-tuned network that is tuned based on night RGB and IR images. Experimental results show that higher object detection performance can be acquired using IR images than using RGB images in both networks.

  • This paper presents a multiple target tracking system using target feature information. In the proposed system, the state of target is defined as its kinematic as well as feature : the kinematic includes a location and a velocity; the feature contains the image correlation between a prior target and a current measurement. The feature information is used for generating the validation matrix and association probability of joint probabilistic data association (JPDA) algorithm. Through the Kalman filter, the target kinematic is updated. Then the tracking information is cycled by the track management algorithm. The system has been evaluated using the images obtained from Electro-Optics/ InfraRed (EO/IR) sensor. It is verified that the proposed system can reduce the complexity burden of JPDA process and can enhance the track maintenance rate.

  • This study focuses on automatic image registration between multiple IR images using simple preprocessing method and modified local feature extraction algorithm. The input images were preprocessed by using the median and absolute value after histogram equalization, and it could be effectively applied to reduce the brightness difference value between images by applying the similarity of extracted features to the concept of angle instead of distance. The results were evaluated using visual and inverse RMSE methods. The features that could not be achieved by the existing local feature extraction technique showed high image matching reliability and application convenience. It is expected that this method can be used as one of the automatic registration methods between multi-sensor images under specific conditions.

Low cost, highly sensitive and selective electrochemical detection of arsenic (III) using silane grafted based nanocomposite

  • Novel silane grafted bentonite was obtained using the natural bentonite as precursor material. The material which is termed as nanocomposite was characterized by the Fourier Transform Infra-red (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The surface imaging and elemental mapping was performed using Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM/EDX) technique. The electroanalytical studies were performed using the nanocomposite electrode. The electroactive surface area of nanocomposite electrode was significantly increased than the pristine bentonite or bare carbon paste based working electrode. The impedance spectroscopic studies were conducted to simulate the equivalent circuit and Nyquist plots were drawn for the carbon paste electrode and nanocomposite electrodes. A single step oxidation/reduction process occurred for As(III) having ΔE value 0.36 V at pH 2.0. The anodic stripping voltammetry was performed for concentration dependence studies of As(III) (0.5 to 20.0 ㎍/L) and reasonably a good linear relationship was obtained. The detection limit of the As(III) detection was calculated as 0.00360±0.00002 ㎍/L having with observed relative standard deviations (RSD) less than 4%. The presence of several cations and anions has not affected the detection of As(III) however, the presence of Cu(II) and Mn(II) affected the detection of As(III). The selectivity of As(III) was achieved using the Tlawng river water sample spiked with As(III).

Development of Real-Time Vision Aided Navigation Using EO/IR Image Information of Tactical Unmanned Aerial System in GPS Denied Environment (GPS 취약 환경에서 전술급 무인항공기의 주/야간 영상정보를 기반으로 한 실시간 비행체 위치 보정 시스템 개발)

  • In this study, a real-time Tactical UAS position compensation system based on image information developed to compensate for the weakness of location navigation information during GPS signal interference and jamming / spoofing attack is described. The Tactical UAS (KUS-FT) is capable of automatic flight by switching the mode from GPS/INS integrated navigation to DR/AHRS when GPS signal is lost. However, in the case of location navigation, errors accumulate over time due to dead reckoning (DR) using airspeed and azimuth which causes problems such as UAS positioning and data link antenna tracking. To minimize the accumulation of position error, based on the target data of specific region through image sensor, we developed a system that calculates the position using the UAS attitude, EO/IR (Electric Optic/Infra-Red) azimuth and elevation and numerical map data and corrects the calculated position in real-time. In addition, function and performance of the image information based real-time UAS position compensation system has been verified by ground test using GPS simulator and flight test in DR mode.

Improvement of Cloud-data Filtering Method Using Spectrum of AERI (AERI 스펙트럼 분석을 통한 구름에 영향을 받은 스펙트럼 자료 제거 방법 개선)

  • The National Institute of Meteorological Research (NIMR) has operated the Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectrometer which is the Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) in Anmyeon island, Korea since June 2010. The ground-based AERI with similar hyper-spectral infrared sensor to satellite could be an alternative way to validate satellite-based remote sensing. In this regard, the NIMR has focused on the improvement of retrieval quality from the AERI, particularly cloud-data filtering method. The AERI spectrum which is measured on a typical clear day is selected reference spectrum and we used region of atmospheric window. We performed test of threshold in order to select valid threshold. We retrieved methane using new method which is used reference spectrum, and the other method which is used KLAPS cloud cover information, each retrieved methane was compared with that of ground-based in-situ measurements. The quality of AERI methane retrievals of new method was significantly more improved than method of used KLAPS. In addition, the comparison of vertical total column of methane from AERI and GOSAT shows good result.

Application of Seasonal AERI Reference Spectrum for the Improvement of Cloud data Filtering Method (계절별 AERI 기준 스펙트럼 적용을 통한 구름에 영향을 받은 스펙트럼 자료 제거방법 개선)

  • The Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) which is the Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectrometer has been operated by the National Institute of Meteorological Research (NIMR) in Anmyeon island, South Korea since June 2010. The ground-based AERI with similar hyper-spectral infrared sensor to satellite could be an alternative way to validate satellite-based remote sensing. In this regard, the NIMR has focused on the improvement of Cloud data Filtering Method (CFM) which employed only one reference spectrum of clear sky in winter season. This study suggests Seasonal-Cloud data Filtering Method (S-CFM) which applied seasonal AERI reference spectra. For the comparison of applied S-CFM and CFM, the methane retrievals (surface volume mixing ratio) from AERI spectra are used. The quality of AERI methane retrieval applied S-CFM was significantly more improved than that of CFM. The positive result of S-CFM is similar pattern with the seasonal variation of methane from ground-based in-situ measurement, even if the summer season's methane is retrieved over-estimation. In addition, the comparison of vertical total column of methane from AERI and GOSAT shows good result except for the summer season.
