Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlations among various radiological parameters used to determine cervical alignment from cervical spine radiographs (X-CS) and cervical spine computed tomography (CT-CS), both within and between modalities. Methods : This study included 168 patients (≤60 years old) without a definite whole spine deformity who underwent CT-CS and X-CS. We measured occipital slope (O-s), C1 slope, C2 slope, C7 slope, sella turcica - C7 sagittal vertical axis (StC7-SVA), spino-cranial angle, T1 slope, and C27-SVA. We calculated the O-C2 angle, O-C7 angle, and C2-7 angle from the measured parameters and conducted correlation analyses among multiple parameters. Results : The intrinsic correlation features among multiple cervical parameters were very similar for both X-CS and CT-CS. The two SVA parameters (C27-SVA and StC7-SVA) were mainly influenced by the upper cervical slope parameters (r=|0.13-0.74|) rather than the lower slope cervical parameters (r=|0.08-0.13|). The correlation between X-CS and CT-CS for each radiological parameter was statistically significant (r=0.26-0.44) except for O-s (r=0.10) and StC7-SVA (r=0.11). Conclusion : The correlation patterns within X-CS and CT-CS were very similar in this study. The correlation between X-ray and CT was statistically significant for most radiological parameters, and the correlation score increased when the horizontal gaze was consistently maintained. The lower cervical parameters were not statistically associated with translation-related parameters (C2-7 SVA and StC7-SVA). Therefore, the upper cervical segment may be a better predictor for determining head and neck translation.
Background: Bronchial asthma is characterized by chronic eosinophilic inflammatory airway disease associated with bronchial hyperresponsiveness and reversible airway obstruction. Bronchial inflammation in asthma may depend in part on the activation of T helper lymphocytes that elaborate proinflammatory cytokines. T helper (Th) lymphocytes can be divided into two categories; Th1 lymphocytes, which secrete IL-2, IL-12 and IFN-$\gamma$, and Th2 lymphocytes, which secrete IL-4, IL-5, IL-6 and IL-10. Th2 lymphocytes appear to induce allergic responses, whereas Th1 lymphocytes induce delayed-type hypersensitivity response. Some infections, such as tuberculosis, cultivate a Th1 immunological environment and inhibit Th2 lymphocytes function. The presence of such infections might inhibit Th2 immune responses and thus protect development of atopic diseases. Method: 15 patients with allergic bronchial asthma, 10 patients with intrinsic bronchial asthma, and 10 healthy volunteers were studied. The serum concentrations of IFN-$\gamma$, IL-12, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-10 were measured by ELISA method and tuberculin skin test was estimated in different groups. Results: The positive response rates of tuberculin test were 46.7% in patients with allergic asthma, 100% in patients with intrinsic asthma and 60% in normal controls. The positive response rates were significantly lower in patients with allergic asthma than those of in patients with intrinsic asthma (p<0.05). Degree of responses to tuberculin test were $12.0{\pm}9.6mm$ in patients with allergic asthma, $18.4{\pm}4.5mm$ in patients with intrinsic asthma and $10.9{\pm}8.8mm$ in normal controls. The degree of responses were significantly reduced in patients with allergic asthma than those of patients with intrinsic asthma (p<0.05). The serum levels of IL-5 in patients with allergic asthma were significantly higher than in patients with intrinsic asthma and normal controls (p<0.05), although it was insignificant. the serum levels of IL-4 and IL-10 in patients with allergic asthma were higher than that of intrinsic asthma and normal controls. The serum levels of IL-12 and IFN-$\gamma$ in patients with allergic asthma and intrinsic asthma were significantly lower than those in normal controls(p<0.05). The serum levels of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and peripheral blood eosinophile counts in patients with allergic asthma were significantly higher than those in normal controls. Peripheral blood esinophil counts had a significant correlation with the serum levels of total IgE, IL-5 and IL-10 in patients with allergic asthma (p<0.05). Conclusion: These results have showed that Th1 lymphocyte functions were lowered and Th2 lymphocyte functions were elevated in patients with allergic asthma than those in normal controls. Suppression of Th1 lymphocyte functions by activation of Th2 lymphocyte might be one of the important aspects of pathogenesis in allergic bronchial asthma.

The maturation and spawning of Black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegeli were investigated using samples randomly collected in the Southern Sea of Korea from March 2007 to February 2008. The FL at 50% sex-changers maturity was estimated to be 26.7 cm. We estimated monthly changes in maturity stages and gonadosomatic index (GSI). The spawning period ranged from March to July, and the peak spawning occurred in May and June. The fecundity (F) was 839,600 eggs at 32.2 cm fork length (FL) to 2,894,913 eggs at 42.0 cm FL, and the relationship between FL and F was expressed as $F=1.264FL^{3.869}$ ($R^2=0.736$). The FL at 50% group maturity was estimated to be 25.8 cm for females and 19.0 cm for males. The sex ratio was 19.9% for female, 20.9% for early sex-changers, 28.7% late sex-changers, 30.5% for male.
This study will evaluate the effect of fermented Morinda citrifolia L. extracts and its marker compounds to provide baseline data for utilizing Morinda citrifolia L. as functional health products. Morinda citrifolia L. and six marker compounds were processed on RAW 246.7 macrophage to test for XTT Cytotoxicity, measure Nitric Oxide and Cyokine formation, and analyze the expression of immune marker genes. Furthermore, LPS and fermented red ginseng extract, a common functional ingredient, are used as positive controls. Our results showed that fermented Morinda citrifolia L and six bioactive compounds did not have any cytotoxic effect in all treatment concentrations and groups. Among six bioactive compounds, SCP and ASE confirmed the formation of NO. In addition, the ASE treatment group showed increased formation of IL-6 and IL-1β and the expression of iNOS and TNF-α. Also, fermented Morinda citrifolia L extract activated the macrophage by enhancing the production of nitric oxide (NO), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β, and the expression of COX2 compared to Morinda citrifolia L. extracts. The result of the study showed that Fermented Morinda citrifolia L. (Noni) and marker compound enhance the innate immunity activity and suggested that the bioactive compound could be applied as a marker compound. Thus, Fermented Morinda citrifolia L. (Noni) could be used as functional food material to develop immunity-enhancing products, and highly functional marker compounds can be utilized as the effective components.
In this study, the extract of Cinnamomum yabunikkei leaves were investigated for the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative activities and their active constituents were identified. In the anti-inflammatory tests using LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells, the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO) without causing cell toxicity. In addition, the EtOAc fraction reduced expression of iNOS protein and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β). Upon the anti-oxidative studies by DPPH and ABTS+ radicals, potent radical scavenging activities were observed in the EtOAc fraction. Five phytochemicals were isolated from the extract of C. yabunikkei leaves; (4S,5R)-4-hydroxy-5-isopropyl-2-methylcyclohex-2-enone (1), methoxy-(3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)ethanediol (2), afzelin (3), nicotiflorine (4) and narcissin (5). As far as we know, compounds 1-5 were isolated for the first time from this plant. In the anti-inflammatory tests for the isolates, compound 1, 3, 4 and 5 were determined to decrease NO production without causing cell toxicity. Furthermore, compound 1 reduced expression of iNOS protein and exhibited potent inhibitory activities of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6). Based on these results, it was suggested that the extract and isolated compounds from C. yabunikkei leaves could be potentially applicable as natural source for pharmaceutical and/or cosmetic ingredients.
This Study was designed to investigate the effect of Sunkihwalhyul -Tang extract(SHT) on the change of cerebral hemodynamics [regional cerebral blood flow(rCBF), pial arterial diameter(PAD) and mean arterial blood pressure(MABP)] in normal and cerebral ischemic rats, and further to determine the mechanisms of action of SHT on hemodynamics. In addition, this study was designed to investigate whether SHT inhibits lactate dehydrog enase(LDH) activity in neuronal cells and cytokines production in serum of cerebral ischemic rats. The results were as follows 1. SHT significantly increased rCBF and PAD in a dose-dependent manner, but MABP was not changed by injecting SHT. These results suggest that SHT significantly increases rCBF by dilating PAD. 2. The SHT-induced increase in rCBF was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with indomethacin(IDN, 1 mg/kg, i.p.), an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase and methylene blue(MTB, $10{\mu}g/kg$, i.p.), an inhibitor of guanylate cyclase. 3. The SHT-induced dilation in PAD was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with IDN and MTB. 4. The SHT-induced some increase in MABP was significantly increased by pretreatment with IDN. These results suggest that the mechanism of action of SBT is mediated by guanylate cyclase. 5. Both rCBF and PAD were significantly and stably increased by SHT(10 mg/kg, i.p.) during the period of cerebral reperfusion, which contrasted with the findings of rapid and marked increase in control group. 6. SBH significantly inhibited LDH activity in neuronal cells. These results suggest that SHT prevents the neuronal death. 7. In cytokine production in the senlm drawn from femoral artery 1 hr after middlecerebral arterial occlusion, sample group showed significantly decreased production of IL-1$\beta$ production, decreased production TNF-$\alpha$ and increased Production of IL-10 compared with control group. 8. In cytokine production in the serum drawn femoral artery 1 hr after reperfusion, sample group showed significantly decreased production of IL-1$\beta$ and TNF-$\alpha$ as wellas significantly increased production of IL10 compared with control group. These results suggest that SHT mediated by guanylate cyclase has inhibitive effect on the brain damage by inhibiting LDH activity, IL-1$\beta$ and TNF-$\alpha$ production, and by accelerating IL-10 production. The present author thinks that SHT has an anti-ischemic effects through the improvement of cerebral hemodynamics and inhibitive enects on the brain damage.

Although ginseng marc is a by-product obtained during manufacturing of various commercial ginseng products and has been routinely discarded as a waste, it still contains considerable amounts of potential bioactive compounds, including saponins and polysaccharides. Previously, we reported that ginseng oligosaccharides derived from ginseng marc polysaccharides by enzymatic hydrolysis exert immunostimulatory activities in macrophages and these activated macrophages are in turn able to inhibit the growth of skin melanoma cells by inducing apoptosis. In the present study, a more detailed investigation of the immunostimulatory activity and underlying action mechanisms of an enzymatic hydrolysate (GEH) containing these oligosaccharides derived from ginseng marc polysaccharides was performed. The levels of proinflammatory cytokines and anti-inflammatory cytokines were measured in GEH-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages using RT-PCR analysis and ELISA. The expression levels of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) and TLR4, Dectin-1, and MerTK were measured by RT-PCR analysis or western blot analysis, and the phagocytic activities of GEH-challenged bone marrow-derived macrophages toward apoptotic Jurkat cells were assayed using fluorescence microscopy. GEH induced the production of both proinflammatory cytokines $TNF-{\alpha}$ and IL-6, and anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 in RAW 264.7 cells. The expression of the TLR2 and MerTK mRNAs was increased upon GEH treatment. Phagocytosis of apoptotic Jurkat cells was enhanced in GEH-treated macrophages. Based on the results, this enzymatic hydrolysate (GEH) containing oligosaccharides exerts immunostimulatory effects by maintaining the balance between M1 and M2 cytokines, facilitating macrophage activation and contributing to the efficient phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Therefore, the GEH could be developed as value-added, health-beneficial food materials with immunostimulatory effects.
The surface solar radiations were calculated and analyzed with spatial resolutions (4 km and 1 km) using by GWNU (Gangneung-Wonju National University) solar radiation model. The GWNU solar radiation model is used various data such as aerosol optical thickness, ozone amount, total precipitable water and cloud factor are retrieved from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), MTSAT-1R satellite data and output of the Regional Data Assimilation Prediction System(RDAPS) model by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), respectively. The differences of spatial resolutions were analyzed with input data (especially, cloud factor from MTSAT-1R satellite). And the Maximum solar radiation by GWNU model were found in Andong, Daegu and Jinju regions and these results were corresponded with the MTSAT-1R cloud factor.
