  • This paper presents new coherent and non-coherent detection methods for the IEEE 802.15.4a low-rate ultra-wideband physical layer with forward error correction (FEC) coding techniques. The coherent detection method involving channel estimation is based on the correlation characteristics of the preamble signal. A coherent receiver uses novel iterated selective-rake (IT-SRAKE) to detect 2-bit data in a non-line-of-sight channel. The non-coherent detection method that does not involve channel estimation employs a 2-bit data detection scheme using modified transmitted reference pulse cluster (M-TRPC) methods. To compare the two schemes, we have designed an IT-SRAKE receiver and a MTRPC receiver using an IEEE 802.15.4a physical layer. Simulation results show the performance of IT-SRAKE is better than that of the M-TRPC by 3-9 dB.

  • The GTS(Guaranteed Time Slot) of IEEE802.15.4 standard, which is the contention free access mechanism, has some problems such as the limited number of deployed devices, the low channel utilization and the service confirm delay. The proposed Cyclic-CFA(Contention Free Access) scheme is a modified polling algorithm that allows a large number of devices to be served Contention Free Access without polling packets. The Cyclic-CFA scheme improves the channel utilization dramatically and also reduces service delay time.

  • Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) are becoming increasingly important to solve the issue of health care. IEEE 802.15.6 is a wireless communication standard for WBANs, aiming to provide a real-time and continuous monitoring. In this paper, we present our development of a modified Markov Chain model and a backoff model, in which most features such as user priorities, contention windows, modulation and coding schemes (MCSs), and frozen states are taken into account. Then we calculate the normalized throughput and average access delay of IEEE 802.15.6 networks under saturation and ideal channel conditions. We make an evaluation of network performances by comparing with IEEE 802.15.4 and the results validate that IEEE 802.15.6 networks can provide high quality of service (QoS) for nodes with high priorities.

  • In this paper, we propose a scheme that tunes the backoff period for enhancing the system throughput with estimating the number of devices in IEEE 802.15.4 slotted carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) networks. Since each device does not sense the channel always in IEEE 802.15.4 slotted CSMA/CA networks, a personal area network (PAN) coordinator is used to estimate the number of active devices. The PAN coordinator broadcasts an optimal backoff period for the estimated number of devices through a beacon frame. In order to estimate the number of devices in run time, a simple moving average filter is utilized. We show the performance of our proposed scheme in terms of the estimated number of devices and the system throughput. The simulation results show that our proposed scheme can obtain higher system throughput than the IEEE 802.15.4 standard.

  • This paper proposes hidden-node aware grouping (HAG) algorithm to enhance the performance of institute of electrical and electronics engineers (IEEE) 802.15.4 networks when they undergo either severe collisions or frequent interferences by hidden nodes. According to the degree of measured collisions and interferences, HAG algorithm dynamically transforms IEEE 802.15.4 protocol between a contention algorithm and a contention-limited one. As a way to reduce the degree of contentions, it organizes nodes into some number of groups and assigns each group an exclusive per-group time slot during which only its member nodes compete to grab the channel. To eliminate harmful disruptions by hidden nodes, especially, it identifies hidden nodes by analyzing the received signal powers that each node reports and then places them into distinct groups. For load balancing, finally it flexibly adapts each per-group time according to the periodic average collision rate of each group. This paper also extends a conventional Markov chain model of IEEE 802.15.4 by including the deferment technique and a traffic source to more accurately evaluate the throughput of HAG algorithm under both saturated and unsaturated environments. This mathematical model and corresponding simulations predict with 6%discrepancy that HAG algorithm can improve the performance of the legacy IEEE 802.15.4 protocol, for example, even by 95% in a network that contains two hidden nodes, resulting in creation of three groups.

  • This paper presents BER, FER performance comparison, especially on PHY mode of IEEE 802.15.4g and IEEE 802.11 under AWGN channel through a simulation, which is communication method using identical frequency bandwidth in M2M environment. This considers suitable communication method of required parameter. It is advantageous that FSK method is used in situations where the system require low complexity and inexpensive structure. And OFDM method is considered for system performance. Further, when the high throughput and various traffic characteristics of the system are required, it can be considered that the method of IEEE 802.11 OFDM PHY mode is used.

  • IEEE 802.15.3 HR-WPAN is designed to enable wireless connectivity of high-speed, low-power, low-cost multimedia-capable portable consumer electronic devices. For quality of service, the standard specifies the use of TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access). However, during low contention TDMA gives much lower channel utilization and higher delays than CSMA (Carrier Sensing Multiple Access) because in TDMA, a node can transmit only during its scheduled time slots whereas in CSMA, nodes can transmit at any time as long as there is no contention. By mixing CSMA and TDMA, Hybrid MAC becomes more robust to timing failures, time-varying channel conditions, slot assignment failures and topology changes than a stand-alone TDMA.

  • WBAN(Wireless Body Area Network) operating around the human body aims at medical and non-medical service at the same time. and it is the short-range communication technology requiring low-power, various data rate and high reliability. Various studies is performing for IEEE 802.15.4, because IEEE 802.15.4 can provide high compatibility for operate WBAN among communication standard satisfiable these requirements. Meanwhile, in the case of coexisting many IEEE 802.15.4-based WBAN, signal interference and collision are the main cause that is decreasing data reliability. but IEEE 802.15.4 Standard does not consider about coexistence of many networks. so it needs improvement. In this paper, To solve about this problem, identify coexistence problem of IEEE 802.15.4-based WBAN by preliminary experiments. and propose a scheme to mitigate the reliability decrease at multiple coexistence WBAN. The proposed scheme can be classified in two steps. The first step is avoidance to collision on the CFP through improving data transmission. The second step is mitigation collision through converting channel access method. Proposed scheme is verified the performance by performing comparison experiment with Standard-based WBAN.

  • IoT has been consistently used in various fields such as smart home, wearables, and healthcare. Since IoT devices are small terminals, relatively simple wireless communication protocols such as IEEE 802.15.4 and ISO 18000 series are used. In this paper, we designed the 802.15.4q 2.4 GHz TASK physical layer. Physical protocol data unit of TASK supports bit-level interleaving and shortened BCH encoding. It is spread by unique ternary sequences. There are four spreading factors to choose the data rate according to the communication channel environment. The TASK physical layer was designed using verilog-HDL and verified through the loop-back test of the transceiver. The designed TASK physical layer was implemented in a fpga and tested using MAXIM RFICs. The PER was about 0% at 10 dB SNR. It is expected to be used in small, low power IoT applications.
