  • In this paper, we present an exact and general expression involving two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions for the bit error rate (BER) of hierarchical MPSK with I/Q phase and amplitude imbalances over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. First we derive a BER expression for the k-th bit of hierarchical 4, 8, 16-PSK signal constellations when Gray code bit mapping is employed. Then, from the derived k-th bit BER expression, we present the exact and general average BER expression for hierarchical MPSK with I/Q phase and amplitude imbalances. This result can readily be applied to numerical evaluation for various cases of practical interest in an I/Q unbalanced hierarchical MPSK system, because the one- and two-dimensional Gaussian Q-functions can be easily and directly computed usinB commonly available mathematical software tools.

  • The I/Q unbalance which is generated by non-ideal components such as a $90^{\circ}$ phase shifter and I/Q filters is an inevitable physical phenomenon and leads to performance degradation when we implement a coherent two-dimensional (2-D) modulation/demodulation system. This paper provides an exact and general expression for the SEP(symbol error probability) of DVB-S2 system with I/Q phase and amplitude unbalance over AWGN channel. Coordinate rotation and shift techniques used to redefine a received signal are key mathematical tools. In conclusion, the derived result is expressed as a linear combination of the 2-D Gaussian Q-functions.

  • In this paper, we propose a practical implementation method of a soft bit decision expression for an R-QAM (Gray coded Rectangular Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) signal based on the Max-Log-MAP algorithm. The parameters of the soft decision expression for the practical implementation can be obtained with simple arithmetic functions associated with some deterministic parameters such as a received value, distances between symbols, and the order of modulation on a signal space. Also, we analyze the performance of an iterative decoding scheme for the QAM signal with I/Q phase unbalance. The unbalance results from the non-ideal characteristic of components such as a phase shifter between in-phase and quadrature paths for quadrature modulator/demondulator.

  • The quality loss of a X-band transmitter has been derived by means of MC simulation. The transmitter as a payload of LEO(Low Earth Orbit) satellite is capable of the down transmission the image data of hundreds Mbps generated from the Electro-Optical Instrument in real time. The parameters such as data asymmetry amplitude unbalance, phase unbalance, wave shaping and channel interference are included in the quality loss simulation Assuming that normally distributed gaussian noise is simply added to the channel, the quality loss of 0.7 dB has been obtained through this simulation based on a 95% confidence interval. The obtained quality loss can be applied to the link budgets as an additional loss item.
