In the middle-resolution remote sensing, the Ground Sampled Distance (GSD) that the detector senses and samples is generally larger than the actual size of the objects (or materials) of interest, and so several objects are embedded in a single pixel. In this case, as it is impossible to detect these objects by the conventional spatial-based image processing techniques, it has to be carried out at sub-pixel level through spectral properties. In this paper, we explain the sub-pixel analysis algorithm, also known as the Linear Spectral Mixing (LSM) model, which has been experimented using the Hyperion data. To find Endmembers used as the prior knowledge for LSM model, we applied the concept of the convex geometry on the two-dimensional scatter plot. The Atmospheric Correction and Minimum Noise Fraction techniques are presented for the pre-processing of Hyperion data. As LSM model is the simplest approach in sub-pixel analysis, the results of our experiment is not good. But we intend to say that the sub-pixel analysis shows much more information in comparison with the image classification.

In this study, a multivariate analysis model of partial least square regression (PLSR) was developed to predict the moisture content of green peppers using hyperspectral imaging (HSI). In HSI, illumination is essential for high-quality image acquisition and directly affects the analytical performance of the visible near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (VIS/NIR-HSI) system. When green pepper images were acquired using a direct lighting system, the specular reflection from the surface of the objects and their intensities fluctuated with time. The images include artifacts on the surface of the materials, thereby increasing the variability of data and affecting the obtained accuracy by generating false-positive results. Therefore, images without glare on the surface of the green peppers were created using a polarization filter at the front of the camera lens and by exposing the polarizer sheet at the front of the lighting systems simultaneously. The results obtained from the PLSR analysis yielded a high determination coefficient of 0.89 value. The regression coefficients yielded by the best PLSR model were further developed for moisture content mapping in green peppers based on the selected wavelengths. Accordingly, the polarization filter helped achieve an uniform illumination and the removal of gloss and artifact glare from the green pepper images. These results demonstrate that the HSI technique with a polarized lighting system combined with chemometrics can be effectively used for high-throughput prediction of moisture content and image-based visualization.

The objective of this study was to estimated nitrogen content and chlorophyll using RGB, Hyperspectral sensors to diagnose of nitrogen nutrition in apple tree leaves. Spectral data were acquired through image processing after shooting with high resolution RGB and hyperspectral sensor for two-year-old 'Hongro/M.9' apple. Growth data measured chlorophyll and leaf nitrogen content (LNC) immediately after shooting. The growth model was developed by using regression analysis (simple, multi, partial least squared) with growth data (chlorophyll, LNC) and spectral data (SPAD meter, color vegetation index, wavelength). As a result, chlorophyll and LNC showed a statistically significant difference according to nitrogen fertilizer level regardless of date. Leaf color became pale as the nutrients in the leaf were transferred to the fruit as over time. RGB sensor showed a statistically significant difference at the red wavelength regardless of the date. Also hyperspectral sensor showed a spectral difference depend on nitrogen fertilizer level for non-visible wavelength than visible wavelength at June 10th and July 14th. The estimation model performance of chlorophyll, LNC showed Partial least squared regression using hyperspectral data better than Simple and multiple linear regression using RGB data (Chlorophyll R2: 81%, LNC: 81%). The reason is that hyperspectral sensor has a narrow Full Half at Width Maximum (FWHM) and broad wavelength range (400-1,000 nm), so it is thought that the spectral analysis of crop was possible due to stress cause by nitrogen deficiency. In future study, it is thought that it will contribute to development of high quality and stable fruit production technology by diagnosis model of physiology and pest for all growth stage of tree using hyperspectral imagery.
Plant water deficiency during drought season causes physiological stress and can be a critical indicator of forest fire vulnerability. In this study, we attempt to analyze the spectral characteristics of water stressed vegetation by using the laboratory measurement on leaf samples and the canopy reflectance spectra extracted from satellite hyperspectral image data. Leaf-level reflectance spectra were measured by varying moisture content using a portable spectro-radiometer. Canopy reflectance spectra of sample forest stands of two primary species (pine and oak) located in central part of the Korean peninsula were extracted from EO-l Hyperion imaging spectrometer data obtained during the drought season in 2001 and the normal precipitation year in 2002. The preliminary analysis on the reflectance spectra shows that the spectral characteristics of leaf samples are not compatible with the ones obtained from canopy level. Although moisture content of vegetation can be influential to the radiant flux reflected from leaf-level, it may not be very straightforward to obtain the spectral characteristics that are directly related to the level of canopy moisture content. Canopy spectra form forest stands can be varied by structural variables (such as LAt, percent coverage, and biomass) other than canopy moisture content.
The analysis of hyperspectral characteristics of materials near the South Han River has been conducted using riverside area measurements by drone installed hyperspectral sensors. Each spectrum reflectance of the riverside materials were compared and analyzed which were consisted of grass, concrete, soil, etc. To verify the drone installed hyperspectral measurements, a ground spectrometer was deployed for field measurements and comparisons for the materials. The comparison results showed that the riverside materials had their unique hyperspectral band characteristics, and the field measurements were similar to the remote sensing data. For the classification of the riverside area, the K-means clustering method and SVM classification method were utilized. The supervised SVM method showed accurate classification of the riverside area than the unsupervised K-means method. Using classification and clustering methods, the inherent spectral characteristic for each material was found to classify the riverside materials of hyperspectral images from drones.
As the number of spectral bands of high spectral resolution data increases, the capability to detect more detailed classes should also increase, and the classification accuracy should increase as well. Often, it is impossible to access enough training pixels for supervise classification. For this reason, the performance of traditional classification methods isn't useful. In this paper, we propose a new model for classification that operates based on decision fusion. In this classifier, learning is performed at two steps. In first step, only training samples are used and in second step, this classifier utilizes semilabeled samples in addition to original training samples. At the beginning of this method, spectral bands are categorized in several small groups. Information of each group is used as a new source and classified. Each of this primary classifier has special characteristics and discriminates the spectral space particularly. With using of the benefits of all primary classifiers, it is made sure that the results of the fused local decisions are accurate enough. In decision fusion center, some rules are used to determine the final class of pixels. This method is applied to real remote sensing data. Results show classification performance is improved, and this method may solve the limitation of training samples in the high dimensional data and the Hughes phenomenon may be mitigated.

This study calculated vegetation indexes such as SR, NDVI, SAVI, and LAI to figure out correlations regarding vegetation by using high resolution KOMPSAT-2 images and LANDSAT images based on the forest biomass distribution map that utilized field survey data, satellite images and LiDAR data and then analyzed correlations between their values and forest biomass. The analysis results reveal that the vegetation indexes of high resolution KOMPSAT-2 images had higher correlations than those of LANDSAT images and that NDVI recorded high correlations among the vegetation indexes. In addition, the study analyzed the characteristics of hyperspectral images by using the COMIS of STSAT-3 and Hyperion images of a similar sensor, EO-1, and further the usability of biomass estimation in hyperspectral images by comparing vegetation index, which had relatively high correlations with biomass, with the vegetation indexes of LANDSAT with the same GSD conditions.

Seed viability is one of the most important parameters that is directly related with seed germination performance and seedling emergence. In this study, a hyperspectral imaging (HSI) system having a range of 1000-2500 nm was used to classify viable watermelon seeds from nonviable seeds. In order to obtain nonviable watermelon seeds, a total of 96 seeds were artificially aged by immersing the seeds in hot water ($25^{\circ}C$) for 15 days. Further, hyperspectral images for 192 seeds (96 normal and 96 aged) were acquired using the developed HSI system. A germination test was performed for all the 192 seeds in order to confirm their viability. Spectral data from the hyperspectral images of the seeds were extracted by selecting pixels from the region of interest. Each seed spectrum was averaged and preprocessed to develop a classification model of partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The developed PLS-DA model showed a classification accuracy of 94.7% for the calibration set, and 84.2% for the validation set. The results demonstrate that the proposed technique can classify viable and nonviable watermelon seeds with a reasonable accuracy, and can be further converted into an online sorting system for rapid and nondestructive classification of watermelon seeds with regard to viability.
South Korea is pushing for the advancement of crop production technology to achieve food self-sufficiency and meet the demand for safe food. A medium-sized satellite for agriculture is being launched in 2023 with the aim of collecting and providing information on agriculture, not only in Korea but also in neighboring countries. The satellite is to be equipped with various sensors, though reference data for ground information are lacking. Hyperspectral remote sensing combined with 1st derivative is an efficient tool for the identification of agricultural crops. In our study, we develop a system for hyperspectral analysis of the ground-based reflectance spectrum, which is monitored seven times during the cultivation period of three soybean crops using a PSR-2500 hyperspectral sensor. In the reflection spectrum of soybean canopy, wavelength variations correspond with stages of soybean growths. The spectral reflection characteristics of soybeans can be divided according to growth into the vegetative (V)stage and the reproductive (R)stage. As a result of the first derivative analysis of the spectral reflection characteristics, it is possible to identify the characteristics of each wavelength band. Using our developed monitoring system, we observed that the near-infrared (NIR) variation was largest during the vegetative (V1-V3) stage, followed by a similar variation pattern in the order of red-edge and visible. In the reproductive stage (R1-R8), the effect of the shape and color of the soybean leaf was reflected, and the pattern is different from that in the vegetative (V) stage. At the R1 to R6 stages, the variation in NIR was the largest, and red-edge and green showed similar variation patterns, but red showed little change. In particular, the reflectance characteristics of the R1 stage provides information that could help us distinguish between the three varieties of soybean that were studied. In the R7-R8 stage, close to the harvest period, the red-edge and NIR variation patterns and the visible variation patterns changed. These results are interpreted as a result of the large effects of pigments such as chlorophyll for each of the three soybean varieties, as well as from the formation and color of the leaf and stem. The results obtained in this study provide useful information that helps us to determine the wavelength width and range of the optimal band for monitoring and acquiring vegetation information on crops using satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
In this paper, a new spectral unmixing based target detection algorithm is proposed which adopted Iterative Error Analysis as a tool for extraction of background endmembers by using the target spectrum to be detected as initial endmember. In the presented method, the number of background endmembers is automatically decided during the IEA by stopping the iteration when the maximum change in abundance of the target is less than a given threshold value. The proposed algorithm does not have the dependence on the selection of image endmembers in the model-based approaches such as Orthogonal Subspace Projection and the target influence on the background statistics in the stochastic approaches such as Matched Filter. The experimental result with hyperspectral image data where various real and simulated targets are implanted shows that the proposed method is very effective for the detection of both rare and non-rare targets. It is expected that the proposed method can be effectively used for mineral detection and mapping as well as target object detection.
