  • This research empirical explores impacts of performance information use of decision makers in distributing financial resources. Based on theoretical review and previous researches, we organized three scenarios of general public administration, economic policy, and environmental policy and investigated the difference in budget distribution between measured information and simple information of success or failure by randomly divided experimental and control groups who are not experienced bureaucratic processed. The results indicate that experimental group judge by using performance information with numeric indicators and has more diversified patterns than control group. We suggest that repeated experiments including bureaucratic members to reduce bias of expertness and generalize the decision making models using performance information in future researches.

  • Primary pulmonary artery sarcoma is a rare malignant tumor arising from the pulmonary artery. Diagnosis of primary pulmonary artery sarcoma is quite difficult and the conditon is often misdiagnosed as a more common disease, such as a pulmonary embolism. PET can help in diagnosing a pulmonary artery sarcoma due to the increased uptake of $^{18}F-FDG$ in the area of the tumor. However, the poor anatomic resolution of PET has limited its clinical applications in pulmonary vascular disease. The recently developed PET/CT is the fusion of PET and CT that improves the anatomical resolution of PET. We report a case of a primary pulmonary artery sarcoma mimicking a pulmonary embolism that was diagnosed with PET/CT and confirmed with a surgical resection.

  • Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis is a rare disorder that is characterized by personality changes, irritability, depression, seizures, memory loss and dementia, and is commonly associated with small cell lung cancer. The cause is unknown but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder that develops secondary to a carcinomatous process. We report a patient with the clinical feature consistent with limbic encephalitis. A 64-year-old women developed disorientation, memory loss and general weakness. She was diagnosed with NSCLC (adenocarcinoma) with a brain metastasis 1 year earlier and was treated with radiation and chemotherapy. Although the lung mass and brain metastatic lesions had improved, the brain T2-weighted MRI showed high signal intensity in the right temporal region. This lesion consisted of with limbic encephalitis and was negative to the other viral and immune markers. The patient's symptoms did not improve after steroid treatment. Our case demonstrated that a NSCLC (adenocarcinoma) also can be associated with paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis.

  • Korean fir(Abies koreana E.H.Wilson 1920), endemic tree species of Korean peninsula, is considered as vulnerable and endangered species to recent rapid environmental changes such as land use and climate change. There are limited activities and efforts to find natural habitats of Korean fir for conservation of the species and habitats. In this study, by applying SDMs (Species Distribution Models) based on climate and topographic factors of Korean fir, we developed Korean fir's predicted distribution model and explored novel natural habitats. In Mt. Shinbulsan, Youngnam region and Mt. Songnisan, we could find korean fir's two novel habitat and the former was the warmest($13^{\circ}C$ in annual mean temperature), the driest(1,200mm~1,600mm in annual rainfall) and relatively low altitude environment among Korean fir's habitats in Korea. The result of SDMs did not include mountain areas of Gangwon-do as habitats of A. nephrolepis, because there were different contributions of key habitat environment factors, summer rainfall, winter mean temperature and winter rainfall, between A. koreana and A. nephrolepis. Our results raise modification of other distribution models on Korean fir. Novel habitat of Korean fir in Mt. Shinbulsan revealed similar habitat affinity of the species, ridgy and rocky site, with other habitats in Korea. Our results also suggest potential areas for creation of Korea fir's alternative habitats through species reintroduction in landscape and ecosystem level.

  • This research was performed to investigate the effects of the supplementation of multi-extracts of mori folium (MF) and of exercise on blood lipid profiles and tissue differentiation in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The animal groups consisted of a normal-control group, a STZ-control group, three STZ-induced diabetic groups supplemented ad libitum with various amounts of MF extracts (MF-720, MF-360, and MF-180 groups), and a STZ-induced diabetic group supplemented with MF-360 combined with exercise; eight male Sprague-Dawley rats, 4 weeks old, were assigned to each experimental group and were raised in the laboratory for a 10 week experimental period. The MF supplementation group showed a significant reduction in levels of serum total cholesterol and triglyceride compared to the STZ-control group. HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly increased in the MF supplementation group compared to STZ-control group. The ratio of HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol was significantly higher in MF supplementation group compared to the STZ-control group. The Atherogenic Index (AI) values in the MF supplementation groups were found to be significantly lower than in the STZ-control group. Serum AST and ALT levels were significantly reduced in the MF-supplementation groups compared to the STZ-control group. Total cholesterol level in the liver tissue was significantly decreased in the MF-360 group and in the MF-360 + exercise group compared to the STZ-control group. In immunohistochemical staining of the pancreatic islets of the MF-supplemented groups, a significantly higher number of insulin-immunoreactive cells were observed compared to the STZ-control group. In the MF supplementation groups, Bowman's capsules were clearly observed as hypertrophy of the glomeruli was not obvious. In the MF supplementation groups, a relative reduction in the hypertrophy of the basement membrane of the glomeruli and a significant reduction in the mesangium were observed compared to the STZ-control group. The results of this study suggest that supplementation of MF has beneficial effect in improving plasma lipid and tissue metabolism in streptozotocin-induced rats.

  • 1-Furan-2-yl-3-pyridin-2-yl-propenone (FPP-3) has recently been synthesized and characterized to have an anti-inflammatory activity through the inhibition of the production of nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor-$\alpha$. In the present study, adverse effects of FPP-3 on immune functions were determined in female BALB/c mice. When mice were administered orally with FPP-3 at 125, 250 or 500 mg/kg for 7 consecutive days, FPP-3 suppressed the number of antibody-forming cells and reduced thymus weight at 500 mg/kg. In addition, FPP-3 administered mice exhibited reduced splenic cellularity and numbers of splenocyte subsets, such as $CD3^+$ cells, $CD3^+CD4^+$ cells, $CD3^+CD8^+$ cells and macrophages. IL-4 mRNA expression was significantly suppressed by FPP-3 treatment. Moreover, the number of $CD4^+IL-4^+$ cells was reduced following the treatment of mice with 500 mg/kg of FPP-3. These results suggested that FPP-3 at 500 mg/kg might be immunotoxic, and that FPP-3-induced immunotoxicity might be mediated, at least in part, through the inhibition of cytokine production, such as IL-4.

  • Objectives : Despite the substantial amount of newspaper coverage related to complementary and alternative medicine on the internet in recent years, little is know about the quality of the health information. To evaluate health information of the newspaper articles on moxibustion available in Korea through Korean language search engines and Web sites. Methods : We searched 454 news stories about moxibustion between 1 January 2006 and 31 December 2008. Among them, 34 internet news coverage related to health information on moxibustion were selected and rated against eight categories by two individuals. Results : The inter-rater reliability of the two reviewers was assessed as 0.69, indicating a moderately high level of agreement. The overall rating score for 34 articles was 35.7${\pm}$17.2 for the statement criteria and 12.9${\pm}$17.0 for the satisfaction criteria. Overall, although they might be improving recently, the scores remain generally low. There was a statistically significant difference in the score of the newspaper coverage according to the type of evidence sources, including anecdotes. Conclusions : There is substantial variability in news reporting practices about moxibustion. It is urgently needed to enhance the information related to CAM including moxibustion through the news media in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a mass preparation method of (+)-decursinol from Angelica gigas roots. Recently; it has been shown that (+)-decursin, (+)-decursinol angelate and its analogues, isolated from Angelica gigas roots, exhibit various biological activities such as antitumor, antibacterial and neuroprotective activities. The contents of these compounds, ester form of (+)-decursinol, is very high in the Angelica gigas roots, whereas the content of (+)-decursinol itself is very low Therefore, (+)-decursinol which can be used as starting material to synthesize various its analogues was easily prepared from decursin analogues in the Angelica gigas roots. In order to achieve such aim, the Ether-Fr. of the ethanol exact of Angelica gigas roots was hydrolysed with various alkalis and solvents. As a result, the order of (+)-decursinol preparation was 1) NaOH, KOH, 2) $K_2CO_3$, and 3) $NaHCO_3$ as alkali. Also, the yield of (+)-decursinol was higher in diethyl ether than any other solvent conditions. From 1 kg of dried Angelica gigas roots, we could obtain 27.4 g of (+)-decursinol as a pure white solid.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of smoking conditions on the in vitro toxicological activity of mainstream smoke. The 2R4F reference cigarette was machine-smoked by International Organization for Standardization(ISO) and Canadian Intense(CI) conditions. Smoke was analysed for chemical composition and in vitro toxicity. The cytotoxic potencies of both the total particulate matter(TPM), which were collected in Cambridge filter pad, and gas/vapor phase(GVP), which was bubbled through in phosphate-buffer saline in a gas-washing bottle, were assessed neutral red up take assay with chinese hamster ovary(CHO) cells. The assessment for genotoxicity of TPMs generated under ISO and CI conditions was determined using Salmonella mutagenicity assay and in vitro micronucleus assay. When calculated on an equal TPM basis, in vitro toxicity of TPM obtained under CI condition was decreased compared to TPM generated under ISO condition. The results of chemical composition analyses revealed that the lower toxicological activity under CI condition than that of ISO condition could be explained by the decreased in the contents of phenols, N-nitrosoamines and aromatic amines of TPM on an equal TPM basis.
