  • In this study, we prepared NiCo2O4 nanoparticles with large surface area by hydrothermal synthesis. In order to optimize the processing conditions for spinel NiCo2O4 nanoparticles with large surface area, experimental variables including concentration of Ni and Co precursor, reaction time, and temperature for post-heat treatment were evaluated. Optimized conditions for spinel NiCo2O4 with large surface area were [Ni]/[Co] 1:2 ratio, reaction time for 12 h, and post-heat treatment at 400℃. To investigate the feasibility as potential application for glucose sensor, electrochemical tests of the prepared NiCo2O4 nanoparticles in response to glucose was performed, which suggests that the NiCo2O4 can be suitable for a non-enzymatic-based electrochemical glucose sensor based on its high sensitivity and selectivity for glucose detection.

  • Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of cobalt gallate were synthesized and deposited on gold electrodes using self-assembly monolayers (SAMs) and hydrothermal processing. These MOF films exhibit strong adsorption capabilities for gaseous particulates, and the use of SAMs allows the synthesis and deposition processes to be completed in a single step. When cobalt gallate is mixed with SAMs, a coordination bond is formed between the cobalt ion and the carboxylate or hydroxyl groups of the SAMs, particularly under hydrothermal conditions. Additionally, the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) gas sensor accurately measures the number of particulates adsorbed on the MOF films in real-time. Thus, the QCM gas sensor is a valuable tool for quantitatively measuring gases, such as SO2, NO2, and CO2. Furthermore, the QCM MOF film gas sensor was more effective for gas adsorption than the MOF particles alone and allowed the accurate modeling of gas adsorption. Moreover, the QCM MOF films accurately detect the adsorption-desorption mechanisms of SO2 and NO2, which exist as gaseous particulate matter, at specific gas concentrations.

  • Hectorite was synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal process from $Mg(OH)_{2}$, water glass (${\sim}30\;wt%\;SiO_{2}$) and Li-compound at $90{\pm}5^{\circ}C$. The product shows excellent dispersion and swelling properties. The mixture of the starting materials was heated in a glass vessel for the first reaction with continuous stirring and the pH of the solution was adjusted to $6{\sim}8$, resulting in the formation of a precursor of hectorite. The excess salt components were washed out from the resulting slurry and then was matured in the glass vessel for the 2nd reaction. Li compound was added during the reaction. After a 10 h retention, the gel of hectorite was formed. The XRD pattern of the synthesized one was coincided with that of natural hectorite and SEM study revealed uniform grains 50 m in diameter. The d001 basal spacing of the product moved from 12 to $17.4\;{\AA}$ after glycolation treatment. The measured value of CEC and the swelling capacity was 90 cmol/kg and $60{\sim}70\;mL/2\;g$, respectively.

  • Well-shaped NaA zeolite cubic crystals of a large size of $5-7{\mu}m$ were synthesized by a hydrothermal method in a mother solution having a $3.55Na_2O:Al_2O_3:1.6SiO_2:593\~2000H_2O$ composition. Thermal treatment of NaA zeolite crystals resulted in the formation of a crystalline phase of $NaAlSiO_4-Camegeite$ between 800 and $900^{\circ}C$. Even at $1000^{\circ}C,\;NaAlSiO_4$ phase was found as a major product. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM), X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and DTA/TGA and BET analyses were used to characterize the initial materials and the obtained products after various heat treatments.

  • This study aimed to optimize the MIL-53 metal-organic framework coatings for enhanced durability in carbon dioxide capture applications. We synthesized MIL-53 powders using a hydrothermal method and deposited them on stainless-steel substrates by spin coating at various speeds, ranging from 300 to 2,000 rpm. The microstructure, surface properties, and tribological characteristics of the coatings were analyzed systematically. The results indicated that the spin speed significantly impacted the coating uniformity and defect formation. Coatings prepared at moderate speeds of 500 to 1,000 rpm exhibited optimal thickness and density, resulting in superior wear resistance. The tribological tests revealed that the coatings prepared at 700 to 1000 rpm had the lowest wear rates. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of durable MOF-based coatings for carbon dioxide capture and other applications requiring long-term stability under mechanical stress.

  • A large NaX type zeolite crystal of a uniform particle size of 20${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are grown with various H2O content by hydrothermal reaction and added seed crystal (2~3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) to reactant solution as a function of different adding seed levels from 3 to 15 %. The result that increased purity of NaX zeolite above 95% and homogeneity of crystal size by increasing adding seed levels, also decreased crystallization time. It was explained that adding seed to synthesis solution leaded out increase of surface area of physical contact reaction and directed growth of seed crystal, so more rapid consumption of reaction gel as increase seeding levels.

  • Kaolinite [$Al_2Si_2O_5(OH)_4$] was successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal process from amorphous $Al(OH)_3$ and $SiO_2$ at $230^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of $30 kg/cm^2$. The experiments were performed varying temperatures ($180{\sim}280^{\circ}C$), pressure ($10{\sim}60kg/cm^2$), chemistry ($Al_2O_3/SiO_2 = 0.5{\sim}0.38$) and pH ($0.3{\sim}9.5$) of the solution. The autoclaving was carried out in a closed stainless steel vessel. Kaolinite appears from the starting composition of $Al_2O_3/SiO_2= 0.5$ with boehmite and was stable as a single phase with the composition of $Al_2O_3/SiO_2=0.45$. Boehmite was a stable phase below $200^{\circ}C$ for the 240 h period of autoclaving, but kaolinite appeared even in 20 h at $230^{\circ}C$. The single kaolinite phase of a good crystallinity was observed at pH ranging 2 to 6. That indicates that pH is one of the most critical parameters for the successful formation of kaolinite. The optimal molar ratio of $Al_2O_3$ to $SiO_2$ was determined to be 0.45. The XRD pattern of the synthesized kaolinite coincided with that of natural one and its morphology was the cluster type of the kaolinite crystals (diameter = ${\sim}3{\mu}m$), irrespective of starting material, composition and temperature.

  • Kaolinite [$Al_2Si_2O_5(OH)_4$] used in these experiments was synthesized at 250$^{\circ}C$ for 36 hrs by a hydrothermal process from amorphous $Al(OH)_3$ and $SiO_2$. The change of the mineralogical properties of the phase synthesized were observed in the pH range 2 to 9. The synthetic kaolinite were characterized by the analytical methods of XRD, IR, DIA, and FE-SEM. Kaolinite was obtained in a wide range of pH. The phases with high- to midium- defect kaolinite with high thermal stability were obtained from the acidic conditions and high-defect kaolinite with low thermal stability from the basic conditions. These variations of kaolinite properties appears to be related to the pH dependence of kaolinite surface speciation. The peaks intensity and resolution of the kaolinite decrease according to the alkalinity of the solution by the results of the IR testing. And the peak intensity increases in the 60 to 70$^{\circ}C$ range due to dehydration reaction observed by TG-DTA. Such phenomena was the result of increase of unreacted amorphous materials in the high pH condition, which could be identified by FE-SEM.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) mixed phases NiSe nanoparticles growing on the nickel foam were synthesized via a simple one-step hydrothermal method. A series of experiments were carried out to control the morphology by adjusting the amount of selenium in the synthetic reaction. Meanwhile, the as-prepared novel column-acicular structure NiSe exist three advantages including ideal electrical conductivity, high specific capacity and high cycling stability. It delivered a high capacitance of $10.8F\;cm^{-2}$ at a current density- of $5mA\;cm^{-2}$. An electrochemical capacitor device operating at 1.6 V was then constructed using NiSe/NF and activated carbon (AC) as positive and negative electrodes. Moreover, the device showed high energy density of $31W\;h\;kg^{-1}$ at a power density of $0.81kW\;kg^{-1}$, as well as good cycling stability (77% retention after 1500 cycles).
