There remain numerous ungauged watersheds in Korea owing to limited spatial and temporal streamflow data with which to estimate hydrological model parameters. To deal with this problem, various regionalization approaches have been proposed over the last several decades. However, the results of the regionalization models differ according to climatic conditions and regional physical characteristics, and the results of the regionalization models in previous studies are generally inconclusive. Thus, to improve the performance of the regionalization methods, this study attaches hydrological model parameters obtained using a spatial proximity model to the explanatory variables of a regional regression model and defines it as a hybrid regionalization model (hybrid model). The performance results of the hybrid model are compared with those of existing methods for 37 test watersheds in South Korea. The GR4J model parameters in the gauged watersheds are estimated using a shuffled complex evolution algorithm. The variation inflation factor is used to consider the multicollinearity of watershed characteristics, and then stepwise regression is performed to select the optimum explanatory variables for the regression model. Analysis of the results reveals that the highest modeling accuracy is achieved using the hybrid model on RMSE overall the test watersheds. Consequently, it can be concluded that the hybrid model can be used as an alternative approach for modeling ungauged watersheds.
This study estimates MODIS-derived evapotranspiration data quality by revised RS-PM algorithm in Seolmacheon test basin. We used latent flux with eddy covariance method to evaluate MODIS-derived spatial evapotranspiration and gap-filled these data by three methods (FAO-PM, MDV and Kalman Filter) and to quantify daily evapotranspiration. Gap-filled daily evapotranspiration data was used to evaluate evapotranspiration computed by revised RS-PM algorithm derived MODIS satellite images. For the water budget analysis, we used soil moisture content that is quantified to average individual soil moisture rate observed by TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor at soil depth. The soil moisture variation is calculated in consideration from initial to final soil moisture content. According to the result of this study, evapotranspiration computed by revised RS-PM algorithm is very larger than eddy covariance data gap-filled by three methods. Also, water budget characteristics is not closed. We could analysis that MODIS-derived spatial evapotranspiration does not represent actual evapotranspiration in Seolmacheon.
In recent, the various methods to predict the hydrological impacts due to climate change have been developed and applied. Especially, the variability of the meteorological factors such as rainfall, temperature, and evaporation can impact on the ecosystem in a basin. The variability caused by climate change on the meteorological factors can be divided by a gradual and abrupt change. Therefore, in this study, the gradual change is detected by simple linear regression and Mann-Kendall trend test. Also, the abrupt change is detected by Bayesian change point analysis. Finally, the result using these methods can identify the meteorological threats in the Cheongmicheon basin.
In this study, estimation methods for actual evapotranspiration have been studied using the concept of potential and actual evapotranspiration. Among the diverse estimation methods, SWAT-K application is chosen for hydrological modeling. For Jeju island we have characterized annual and monthly evapotranspiration using SWAT-K. In the results, simulated potential evapotranspiration reached to the 91% of small pan evaporation. With respect to the temperature lapse rate($-6^{\circ}C/km$) depending on the altitude of Halla mountain, evapotranspiration rate decreased by 7.5% compared to the status when the temperature data from the Jeju weather station were applied to the watershed. As the average of annual rainfall increased, potential evapotranspiration was increased, actual evapotranspiration was, however, decreased.

Evaluating interpolated rainfall uncertainty of hydrological models caused by different interpolation methods for basins where can not fully collect rainfall data are necessary. In this study, the adaptive MCMC method under effects of ILFs was used to analyze the interpolated rainfall uncertainty of the SURR model for Gunnam basin, Korea. Three events were used to calibrate and one event was used to validate the posterior distributions of unknown parameters. In this work, the performance of four ILFs on uncertainty of interpolated rainfall was assessed. The indicators of p_factor (percentage of observed streamflow included in the uncertainty interval) and r_factor (the average width of the uncertainty interval) were used to evaluate the uncertainty of the simulated streamflow. The results showed that the uncertainty bounds illustrated the slight differences from various ILFs. The study confirmed the importance of the likelihood function selection in the application the adaptive Bayesian MCMC method to the uncertainty assessment of the SURR model caused by interpolated rainfall.

Vegetative Filter Strip (VFS) is the best management practice which has been widely used to mitigate water pollutants from agricultural fields by alleviating runoff and sediment. This study was conducted to improve an equation for estimating sediment trapping efficiency of VFS using several different regularization methods (i.e., ordinary least squares analysis, LASSO, ridge regression analysis and elastic net). The four different regularization methods were employed to develop the sediment trapping efficiency equation of VFS. Each regularization method indicated high accuracy in estimating the sediment trapping efficiency of VFS. Among the four regularization methods, the ridge method showed the most accurate results according to $R^2$, RMSE and MAPE which were 0.94, 7.31% and 14.63%, respectively. The equation developed in this study can be applied in watershed-scale hydrological models in order to estimate the sediment trapping efficiency of VFS in agricultural fields for an effective watershed management in Korea.

The Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models provide information for weather forecasts. The highly nonlinear and complex interactions in the atmosphere are simplified in meteorological models through approximations and parameterization. Therefore, the simplifications may lead to biases and errors in model results. Although the models have improved over time, the biased outputs of these models are still a matter of concern in meteorological and hydrological studies. Thus, bias removal is an essential step prior to using outputs of atmospheric models. The main idea of statistical bias correction methods is to develop a statistical relationship between modeled and observed variables over the same historical period. The Model Output Statistics (MOS) would be desirable to better match the real time forecast data with observation records. Statistical post-processing methods relate model outputs to the observed values at the sites of interest. In this study three methods are used to remove the possible biases of the real-time outputs of the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model in Imjin basin (North and South Korea). The post-processing techniques include the Linear Regression (LR), Linear Scaling (LS) and Power Scaling (PS) methods. The MOS techniques used in this study include three main steps: preprocessing of the historical data in training set, development of the equations, and application of the equations for the validation set. The expected results show the accuracy improvement of the real-time forecast data before and after bias correction. The comparison of the different methods will clarify the best method for the purpose of the forecast skill enhancement in a real-time case study.

Overseas examples of the characterization stage of site selection proposed by the International Atomic Energy Agency were reviewed to highlight the factors necessary for consideration in the deep disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Studies in Sweden, Finland, the USA, and Canada were considered. Site investigations in Sweden and Finland commonly covered the fields of geology, hydrogeology, and hydrogeochemistry using similar field investigation techniques. The USA considered survey groups and factors under pre- and post-lockdown guidelines, as well as those for desaturated and saturated surveys. involving geophysical, hydrological, hydrogeological, hydrogeochemical, mechanical/physical, and thermal-characterization investigations. Canada provided a list of investigative methods for both preliminary and detailed site assessments including geological, physical, boring, hydrological, laboratory testing, and chemical analysis studies. Results of this study should elucidate site-selection investigation factors and survey methods applicable to Korea.

The sponge city construction is being carried out in China, and how to reasonably determine the scale of the sponge city facilities is a key point that the planners and designers should seriously solve. In this paper, taking determination of the sponge city facilities in a residential building in Shenzhen as an example, the layout and scales of the rainwater tanks, raingardens, ecological roofs and permeable pavements are decided by using the volumetric method and stormwater management model (SWMM). The calculated results by the two methods are compared and analyzed. The results show that the scales of the sponge city facilities determined by the two methods are almost the same, and it means that any method can be used to determine the scale of sponge city facilities. The volumetric method is relatively simple, and it is suggested to use to determine the scale of sponge city facilities during planning stage. While SWMM is more complex and requires a lot of input conditions, but it can provide the reduction effects of the sponge city facilities for rainfalls with different recurrence periods. Therefore, SWMM is recommended to use the calculation of the hydrological process of the sponge city facilities during the design stage.
Evapotranspiration (ET) including evaporation from a land surface and transpiration from photosynthesis of vegetation is a sensitive hydrological factor with outer circumstances. Though both direct measurements with an evaporation pan and a lysimeter, and empirical methods using eddy covariance technique and the Bowen ratio have been widely used to observe ET accurately, they have a limitation that the observation can stand for the exact site, not for an area. In this study, remote sensing technique is adopted to compensate the limitation of ground observation using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) multispectral sensor mounted on Terra satellite. We improved to evapotranspiration model based on remote sensing (Mu et al., 2007) and estimated Penman-Monteith evapotranspiration considering regional characteristics of Korea that was using only MODIS product. We validated evapotranspiration of Sulma (SMK)/Cheongmi (CFK) flux tower observation and calculation. The results showed high correlation coefficient as 0.69 and 0.74.
