A system identification method is introduced to increase the prediction accuracy of a ship's maneuverability in PMM test, analysis. To improve the accuracy of linear hydrodynamic coefficients, the analysis techniques of pure sway and yaw tests are developed, and confirmed. In the analysis of sway tests, accuracy to linear hydrodynamic coefficients depends on the frequency of sway motion. To obtain nonlinear hydrodynamic coefficients for large drift angles, a combined yaw test is introduced. Using this system identification method, runs of PMM test can be reduced while retaining sufficient accuracy, compared to the Fourier integration method. Through the comparisons with sea trial results and the Fourier integration method, the accuracy and efficiency of the newly proposed system identification method, based on least square method, has been validated.

This paper describes a hydrodynamic modelling study based on the Feldman's equation to predict the nonlinear and coupled maneuvering characteristics of high speed submarine. The hydrodynamic coefficients set is obtained from the modeling of the cross flow drag force and sail induced vorticity, and the captive model experiments(VPMM and RA test) results used to improved the accuracy. The results contained in this paper will be helpful to predict the behavior of tight turn maneuver and to improve the SOE(Safety Operational Envelope) analysis in case of emergency maneuver.

In recent years, there have been concerted efforts toward predicting ship maneuvering in shallow water since the majority of ship's accidents near harbors commonly occur in shallow and restricted waters. Enhancement of ship maneuverability at the design stage is crucial in ensuring that a ship navigates safely. However, though challenging, establishing the mathematical model of ship maneuvering motion is recognized as crucial toward accurately predicting the assessment of maneuverability. This paper focused on a study on sensitivity analysis of the hydrodynamic coefficients on the maneuverability prediction of KVLCC2 in shallow waters. Hydrodynamic coefficients at different water depths were estimated from the experimental results conducted in the square tank at Changwon National University (CWNU). The simulation of standard maneuvering of KVLLC2 in shallow waters was compared with the results of the Free Running Model Test (FRMT) in shallow waters from other institutes. Additionally the sensitivity analysis of all hydrodynamic coefficients was conducted by deviating each hydrodynamic derivative from the experimental results. The standard maneuvering parameters including turning tests and zig-zag maneuvers were conducted at different water depths and their effects on the standard maneuvering parameters were assessed to understand the importance of different derivatives in ship maneuvering in shallow waters.
In the present study, the total hydrodynamic pressure exerted by the fluid on walls of rectangular tanks due to horizontal excitations of different frequencies, is investigated by pressure based finite element method. Fluid within the tanks is invisid, compressible and its motion is considered to be irrotational and it is simulated by two dimensional eight-node isoparametric. The walls of the tanks are assumed to be rigid. The total hydrodynamic pressure increases with the increase of exciting frequency and has maximum value when the exciting frequency is equal to the fundamental frequency. However, the hydrodynamic pressure has decreasing trend for the frequency greater than the fundamental frequency. Hydrodynamic pressure at the free surface is independent to the height of fluid. However, the pressure at base and mid height of vertical wall depends on height of fluid. At these two locations, the hydrodynamic pressure decreases with the increase of fluid depth. The depth of undisturbed fluid near the base increases with the increase of depth of fluid when it is excited with fundamental frequency of fluid. The sloshing of fluid with in the tank increases with the increase of exciting frequency and has maximum value when the exciting frequency is equal to the fundamental frequency of liquid. However, this vertical displacement is quite less when the exciting frequency is greater than the fundamental frequency.

The present study proposes a time domain model for the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) simulation of a catenary riser under the combination of the current and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. In this model, the hydrodynamic force of VIV comprises excitation force, hydrodynamic damping and added mass, which are taken as functions of the non-dimensional frequency and amplitude ratio. The non-dimensional frequency is related with the response frequency, natural frequency, lock-in range and the fluid velocity. The relatively oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion is taken into account in the fluid velocity. Considering that the added mass coefficient and the non-dimensional frequency can affect each other, an iterative analysis is conducted at each time step to update the added mass coefficient and the natural frequency. This model is in detail validated against the published test models. The results show that the model can reasonably reflect the effect of the added mass coefficient on the VIV, and can well predict the riser's VIV under stationary and oscillatory flow induced by vessel motion. Based on the model, this study carries out the VIV simulation of a catenary riser with harmonic vessel motion. By analyzing the bending moment near the touchdown point, it is found that under the combination of the ocean current and oscillatory flow the vessel motion may decrease the VIV response, while increase the excited frequencies. In addition, the decreasing rate of the VIV under vessel surge is larger than that under vessel heave at small vessel motion velocity, while the situation becomes opposite at large vessel motion velocity.

With the increases in oil and gas prices, and energy consumption, drillship construction has increased during the last decade. A drillship using a dynamic positioning (DP) system to maintain its position and heading angle during drilling operations. In addition, a drillship is equipped with a moonpool structure to allow its drilling systems to be operated in the midship section. A drillship for the North Sea is specially designed to endure harsh environmental loads. For safe operation in the North Sea, the drillship should have good motion response and robust hull strength. A break water should be considered on the bow and side deck to prevent the green water on deck phenomenon from incoming waves. In addition, the moonpool should be designed to reduce the speed loss and resonance motion. In this study, the hydrodynamic characteristics of a drillship for the North Sea were examined in relation to the motion, wave loads, green water, and moonpool resonance in the initial design stage.

A moored floating structure may exhibit resonant motion responses to low-frequency excitations. Similar to the resonant responses of many vibration systems, the motion amplitude of a moored floating structure is significantly affected by the damping of the entire system. In such cases, the damping contributed by the mooring lines sometimes accounts for as much as 80% of the total damping. While the damping induced by catenary mooring lines is well-investigated, few studies have been conducted on the damping induced by taut mooring lines, especially one partly embedded in soil. The present study develops a simple but accurate model for estimating the damping contributed by mooring lines. A typical type of taut mooring line was used as the reference and the hydrodynamic drag force and soil resistance were taken into consideration. The proposed model was validated by comparing its predictions with those of a previously developed model and experimental measurements obtained by a physical model. Case studies and sensitivity studies were also conducted using the validated model. The damping induced by the soil resistance was found to be considerably smaller than the hydrodynamic damping. The superposition of the wave frequency motion on the low-frequency motion was also observed to significantly amplify the damping induced by the mooring lines.
To confirm whether the square tank at Changwon National University (CWNU) can be used for estimation of maneuverability, planar motion mechanism (PMM) test and circular motion (CM) test were performed for various conditions. PMM test can be implemented using an XY carriage and a yaw table in the square tank. However, sometimes test section is insufficient for PMM test owing to low length-breadth ratio of the tank. In addition, the speed of a towing carriage is also quite limited. Therefore, it would be useful if PMM test could be effectively performed diagonally, by establishing coupled control logic to drive three servomotors. In addition, Froude number dependency on the estimated hydrodynamic coefficients was checked. Furthermore, CM tests, which cannot be completed in a conventional linear towing tank, were performed, and its results were compared with the results of PMM test. The results of the PMM tests in the diagonal direction were consistent with the results of the test performed in the direction parallel to the sidewall. However, the results of the CM test were greater than those of the PMM test. This tendency was also observed in the results published at Ulsan University.
Classical theory of hydrodynamic pressure on dams during earthquakes is revisited and examined with linear transient theory. Because the ground motion during earthquakes is not only transient but also consists of random horizontal and vertical motions, it is proper to treat hydrodynamic pressure on dams with transient theory for random, transient earthquake motions. The present study fines that surface waves are negligible and that the present theory agrees well with the classical theory if the ground motion is horizontal and harmonic with a high frequency.

Recently, ultra large scale of ship is being ordered continuously and because of that, the accurate prediction of ship maneuverability in design stage becomes important matter. The model test like PMM test or CFD analysis are representative methods for predicting the maneuverability of ship. In this study, the captive model tests were carried out for predicting maneuverability of MOERI container ship(KCS) which is opened to the public using X-Y Carriage of Ocean Engineering Wide Tank of University of Ulsan. Considering the dimensions of tank, 2m class model ship was used for captive model test. CMT(Circular Motion Test) was performed for obtaining purer hydrodynamic coefficients related to yawing velocity. For getting hydrodynamic coefficients which cannot be obtained using CMT, PMM test(Planar Motion Mechanism test) were also performed. The maneuverability prediction results by simulation are compared with those of other research institutes.
