  • The retarding effects of MgSiF6.6H2O on the hydration of portland cement were studied. The setting time, flow value and compressive strength of mortar were measured and the mechanism of retardation was also studied by ion concentration in solution, SEM, BET, and X-ray diffraction. The results are as follows ; 1. Setting time was delayed by the addition of MgSiF6.6H2O. 2. The flow value of mortar decreases depending upon the amount of MgSiF6.6H2O. 3. The compressive strength was almost same or some increase on 28 days hydration. 4. The main retardation mechanism of MgSiF6 on the hydration of portland cement may be explained by the following hypothesis. MgSiF6 depressing the Ca++ and K+ ion concentration of cement paste solution be-cause of the recrystalization of K2SiF6 and CaF2 phase. The new products of K2SiF6 and CaF2 deposit on the surface of unhydrated cement powder and harzard the mass transfer through these layer. The low con-centration of Ca++, K+ ion in solution was decreasing the hydration rate of portland cement.

  • In this paper, morter and concrete specimens made with four cements were immersed in Mgcl2, MgSO4 Solution and artifical Seawater which was corresponded with Seawater. The hydration products of immersed cement pastes were looked over by using SEM, EDS and X-ray diffraction method. The results show that the concrete made with domestic flyash cement and blast-frrnace slag cement is superior to that of ordinary portland cement in resistance to chloride and sulphate solution. Especially, it is found that the attack of Cl-ion on the concrete plays an important role of the deterioration of concrete.

  • Hydration products formed on the steel surface may impose the resistance to corrosion of steel when a concrete is exposed to a salt environment. In the present study, ordinary Portland cement (OPC), calcium aluminate cement (CAC) and calcium hydroxide are applied as coating materials on the steel surface to consider the hydrations of each binder at corrosion. Corrosion is measured in terms of the corrosion potential and galvanic current to detect the effects in mitigating the corrosion behavior.

  • Phase change material(PCM) has the capacity to absorb or release energy in heat when the phase changes. This study conducted to investigate the effect of strontium-based PCM on the hydration heat and mechanical properties of mortar with fly ash and blast furnace slag. The amounts of PCM were 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% by the cementitious materials weight. The tests about mortar flow, semi-adiabatic temperature rise, compressive and flexural strength tests were carried out for twelve types of mortar mixtures. The test results indicated that the use of PCM was effective to reduce hydration heat and retard hydration of mortar with industrial by-products. In particular, the heat generation rate of mortars with fly ash was lower than that of mortars with blast furnace slag. The compressive strength of mortar with fly ash and blast furnace slag were decreased with increasing PCM ratio.

  • In this study, Neutralized red mud(LRM+S) at a pH of 6-8 was prepared by adding sulfuric acid to liquefied red mud(LRM) at a pH of 10~12. After adding LRM and LRM+S to the cement paste, the hydration heat, compressive strength, and hydration products were examined. The observed accumulated hydration heat revealed that the calorific value of the cement paste with LRM was low and its and peak was delayed when compared with that of plain cement paste(referred to as Plain), whereas the calorific value of the cement paste with LRM+S was similar to that of Plain. At the age of 28 days, the compressive strength of the cement paste with 20% LRM was 55% of the strength of Plain. Using X-ray diffraction, it was determined that the cement paste with 20% LRM exhibited a Ca(OH)2 peak after 3 days, whereas the cement paste with 20% LRM+S and Plain exhibited a Ca(OH)2 peak after an hour. Thus, the strength degradation of cementitious materials was improved by adding neutralized red mud prepared by adjusting the pH of highly alkaline LRM with sulfuric acid.

  • The cement is a typical CO2 emission industry. Manufacturing process improvements and increased use of alternative materials are needed to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This study confirmed the basic characteristics of cement hydration by sintering CAF at low temperature as a CO2 adsorbent material. For the hydration product of the synthetic CAF, crystal phase analysis, porosity, and structural images were confirmed, and the compressive strength was measured. The replacement rate of SCAF was 10, 20, and 100 %, and the compressive strength tended to decrease as the replacement rate increased. In addition, when the SCAF substitution rate is 100 %, the hydration products of the early age are calcium aluminum oxide hydrate (Ca3Al2O6 x H2O) and calcium iron hydroxide (Ca3Fe(OH)12), and at substitution rates of 10 and 20 %, CAF compounds other than general cement hydrates brownmillerite was observed. As for the porosity, the pore size increased and the porosity increased with the increase of the replacement ratio. As a result of this study, CAF manufactured by low-temperature sintering seems to be difficult to use alone and general curing for utilization as a CO2 adsorbing material.

  • The present study investigates the chemical reaction and performance of ternary blended binders by mixing ferronickel slag. Cement was replaced using ground granulated blast furnace slag and ferronickel slag, combined up to 50% of the replacement rate. The blended cements were tested by setting times, length change, compressive strength at 1, 3, 7, 28 days. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope were conducted for detecting hydration products while the MIP and microhydation heat were used for examining morphological characteristics. The results showed that by adding ferronickel slag, Pozzolanic reaction occurred, forming a dense pore structure and the effect of reducing hydration heat and dry shrinkage was also found. The compressive strength at 28 days was lower than that of 100% OPC control specimen (OSP0), but ternary blended cements showed no significant difference compared to binary blended (OSP50). If the optimal mix is derived later and used for the purpose, the potential for use as a cement binder is expected.

  • The present study was carried out to find a suitable drying method for the determination of non-evaporable water in hydraulic inorganic materials. In Part 1 of the paper, the case ordinary Portland cement was discussed and, in this Part 2, the case of alkali active slag (AAS) was investigated. Various drying methods including vacuum and oven drying, and an ignition, were used for the AAS system having different w/b, types and amounts of alkali activators. It was found that a combination of the vacuum and oven drying was a suitable drying method for the AAS case. Although a part of the crystallized water in hydration products was decomposed, but the free and adsorbed water could be completely evaporated and the deviation of the results was small.
