Optimal design of the co-cured aluminum/composite double lap joint (탄소섬유/에폭시 복합재료-알루미늄 양면겹치기 동시경화 조인트의 최적설계)

  • The co-cured joint has been widely used in joining process of composite structures due to its simple and easy manufacturing process. In this paper, the effect of stacking sequence of the carbon epoxy prepreg, bonding length and thickness of the aluminum plate on the static tensile load capability of the co-cured aluminum-composite double lap joint were experimentally investigated. From experimental results, the optimum EA ratios with respect to stacking sequence and bonding length of the co-cured joint were obtained, which may be useful for the joining of hybrid structures.

Characteristic of EP-MAP for Deburring of Microgroove using EP-MAP (전해-자기 복합 가공을 이용한 미세 그루브형상의 가공 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Magnetic abrasive polishing is an advanced deburring process for nonmagnetic materials and micropattern products that have non-machinability characteristics. Despite these advantages, there are some problems with using MAP for deburring. MAP has introduced geometric errors into microgrooves because of an over-cutting force caused by uncontrolled magnetic abrasives in the MAP tool. Thus, in this study, to solve this problem, an EP (electrolyte polishing)-MAP hybrid polishing process was developed for deburring microgrooves in an STS316 material. In addition, an evaluation of EP-MAP for the deburring of microgrooves was carried out by profiling the burrs. The results of the experiment showed geometric errors after the deburring process using MAP. However, in the case of EP-MAP, no geometric error was observed after the process because of the lower material removal rate in EP-MAP.

  • In the manufacturing industry, there is a transition to multi-item production for reinforcement of competitiveness. Therefore, the hybrid manufacturing technology is increasing. Especially, many efforts in production quality improvement are made through the adoption of the manufacturing execution system and ERP, so it is necessary to operate MES for prompt and effective management. MES should improve ineffective parts in production activities while managing all stages related to production of products. If there is change in the process, the changed items should be reflected to the system. However, most manufacturing execution systems are operated passively and repetitively by system administrators. This study presents a model that system administrators can comprehensively apply reference information about production related requirements on specific line's equipment to the same equipment of other lines. The flexible response for application to production lines is possible thanks to the division of blanket application and selective application of reference information through proposed model.

Alignment Algorithm for Nano-scale Three-dimensional Printing System (나노스케일 3 차원 프린팅 시스템을 위한 정렬 알고리즘)

  • Hybrid manufacturing technology has been advanced to overcome limitations due to traditional fabrication methods. To fabricate a micro/nano-scale structure, various manufacturing technologies such as lithography and etching were attempted. Since these manufacturing processes are limited by their materials, temperature and features, it is necessary to develop a new three-dimensional (3D) printing method. A novel nano-scale 3D printing system was developed consisting of the Nano-Particle Deposition System (NPDS) and the Focused Ion Beam (FIB) to overcome these limitations. By repeating deposition and machining processes, it was possible to fabricate micro/nano-scale 3D structures with various metals and ceramics. Since each process works in different chambers, a transfer process is required. In this research, nanoscale 3D printing system was briefly explained and an alignment algorithm for nano-scale 3D printing system was developed. Implementing the algorithm leads to an accepted error margin of 0.5% by compensating error in rotational, horizontal, and vertical axes.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the optimum conditions for manufacturing titanium dioxide using a hybrid self-assembly forming method, to confirm the shape, properties and synergy effect of UV protection for hybrid titanium dioxide. Hybrid titanium dioxide, manufactured by forming self-assembly of different sizes consisting of two kinds of titanium dioxides, has micro titanium dioxide (250nm~300nm) for support material, Nano titanium dioxide (20~30nm) for surface material, coating support material. Adjustment experiments of $AlCl_3$ concentration and both titanium dioxide ratio were conducted to find the optimized conditions for the surface coating of titanium dioxide striking a negative charge, a sample made of the optimized process was confirmed through an optical analysis, particle size analysis, and potentiometric analysis. The SPF in-vitro value of the cosmetics samples containing hybrid titanium dioxide showed 15~30% higher levels than the cosmetics samples containing both titanium dioxides mixture.

Spring-back in GFR / CFR Unsymmetric Hybrid Composite Materials (유리섬유 / 탄소섬유 강화 비대칭 하이브리드 복합재료의 스프링 백)

  • The fiber-reinforced composite materials have been advanced for various applications because of their excellent mechanical and electromagnetic properties. On their manufacturing processes, however, thermo-curing inherently produces the undesired thermal deformation mainly from temperature drop from the process temperature to the room temperature, so called spring-back. The spring-back must be understood especially in the hybrid composites in order to design and fabricate desired shape. In this research, (glass fiber / epoxy) + (carbon fiber / epoxy) unsymmetric hybrid composites were fabricated under various conditions such as cure cycle, laminate thickness, stacking sequence and curing sequence. Coupons were made and spring-back were measured using coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Using the Classical Lamination Theory (CLT) and finite element analysis (ANSYS), the behavior of spring-back were predicted and compared with the experimental data. The results from CLT and FEA agreed well with the experimental data. Although, the spring-back could be reduced by lowering curing temperature, at any case, the spring-back could not be removed completely.

  • Thermally or electrically conductive filler reinforced polymer composites are extensively being developed as the demand for light weight material increases rapidly in industiral applications need good conductivity such as heat sink of the electronics or light. Carbon or ceramic materials like graphite, carbon nanotube or boron nitride are typical conductive fillers with good thermal or electical conductivity. Using these conductive fillers, the polymer composites in the market show wide range of thermal conductivity from approximately 1 W/mK to 20 W/mK, which is quite enhanced considering the thermal conductivity lower than 0.5 W/mK for most polymeric materials. The practical use of these composites, however, is yet limited to specific applications because most composites are still not conductive enough or too difficult to process, too brittle, too expensive for higher conductivity. For practical use of conductive composite, the thermal conductivity required depending on the heat releasing mode are studied first for simplified unit cooling geometry to propose thermal conductivities of the composites for reasonable cooling performance comparing with the metal heat sink as a reference. Also, as a practical design for heat sink based on polymer composite, composite and metal sheet hybrid structures are investigated for LED lamp heat sink and audio amplication module housing to find that this hybrid structure can be a good solution considering all of the cooling performance, manufacturing, mechanical performance, cost and weight.

TSV Formation using Pico-second Laser and CDE (피코초 레이저 및 CDE를 이용한 TSV가공기술)

  • The advantage of using lasers for through silicon via (TSV) drilling is that they allow higher flexibility during manufacturing because vacuums, lithography, and masks are not required; furthermore, the lasers can be applied to metal and dielectric layers other than silicon. However, conventional nanosecond lasers have disadvantages including that they can cause heat affection around the target area. In contrast, the use of a picosecond laser enables the precise generation of TSVs with a smaller heat affected zone. In this study, a comparison of the thermal and crystallographic defect around laser-drilled holes when using a picosecond laser beam with varing a fluence and repetition rate was conducted. Notably, the higher fluence and repetition rate picosecond laser process increased the experimentally recast layer, surface debris, and dislocation around the hole better than the high fluence and repetition rate. These findings suggest that even the picosecond laser has a heat accumulation effect under high fluence and short pulse interval conditions. To eliminate these defects under the high speed process, the CDE (chemical downstream etching) process was employed and it can prove the possibility to applicate to the TSV industry.

  • The Korean Tilting Train eXpress (TTX) with service speed of 180km/h have been developing using hybrid design concept combined with a sandwich composite structure for the carbody and stainless steel structure for the underframe to match the challenging demands with respect to cost efficient lightweight design for railway carriage structures. The sandwich composite structure was used to minimize the weight of the carbody, while the metal underframe was used to modify the design easily and to keep the strength of underframe for the installation of the electrical equipments. The sandwich composite structure was 23 meters long, 3 meters wide and 2.7 meters high, and cured as one body in a large autoclave equipment with the length of 30 meters and the diameter of 5 meters. The joint part between the carbody structure made of sandwich composites and the metal underframe was joined by the proposed design.

System Development of Removing Dust and Odor from Manufacturing Process of FRP Products (FRP제품 가공시 발생하는 분진 및 악취 제거 시스템 개발)

  • When fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) products are manufactured, dust and odor materials are inevitably generated in a workplace. To improve the bad condition of the workshop, we developed the Hybrid Bag Filter attached activated carbon fiber (ACF) and installed the system at two companies producing FRP goods. In order to raise the efficiency of dust collection, we set the ducts both on the ceiling and at the bottom of the wall and according to the circumstances of the workshop's space, moving dust collector also adopted as a different type of flexible duct. Pulse Jet Type Bag Filter is also equipped to operate the system more effectively, for the improved fine environment because of high dust removal efficiency. Finally, we investigated the removal tendency of the dust and odor when operating the System of Hybrid Bag Filter.
