  • Dynamic stability of rotating blade considering gravity effect is investigated in this paper. Equations of motion for the beam is derived by employing hybrid deformation variable method and transformed into dimensionless form. The present modeling method is verified by RecurDyn. Stability diagrams are presented to show the influence of the configuration of the beam and angular velocity on the dynamic stability by applying Floquet's theory. Since the natural frequencies are varied when the blade has rotating motion, it is found that relatively large unstable regions exist approximately 1.1 times as high as the first bending natural frequency and half of the sum of first and second bending natural frequency.

  • A circular saw is an effective tool for cutting glass and carbon-fiber hybrid composites. This study investigated tool wear and cut quality when reusing saw blades. The carbide saws wear four times faster than the new ones, and polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is very resistant to tool wear, except at the end of its lifespan. The cut cross-section quality is affected by the blade type, tool wear, and spindle speed. Alternate top bevel (ATB)-type blades are suitable for cutting fiber-reinforced plastics, but triple-chip grind (TCG)-type blades are unsuitable because they cause fiber-pullout defects. Tool wear and low spindle speeds increase the occurrence of arc scratches, due to the rear saw blade. A microscopic examination showed that the burr, which is a mixture of fiber chips and epoxy matrix, was bonded on top, and glass-fiber delamination occurred on the bottom glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) surface.

  • According to recent figures, 35% of the world's blades are made using prepreg blades, by Vestas and Gamesa. They are the most advanced in the market today. In this study, we investigated the validity of the finite element method (FEM) applied to an FE analysis of a hybrid composite wind-turbine blade. Two methods were suggested for a composite FE analysis: using the equivalent properties of the composite or using stacking properties. FE analysis results using the stacking properties of the composite were in good agreement with results of using the equivalent properties. The difference between FE results was approximately 0.6~13.3%.

  • A new type actuator has been designed and investigated to overcome thermal problems in slim optical disc drive which is adopted in mobile storage devices. Recently, in optical storage device technical trends, the size of optical disc drives is slimmer to adopt notebook computer and the spindle rotate velocity is faster to achieve high transfer rate and the power of actuator is higher to perform tilting, etc. However, these trends of optical disc drives tend to raise the environment temperature of drives, actuator power and parts temperature. Moreover, it is more difficult to remove the heat inside a drive and the temperature of an actuator increases and drive slims. As a result, increase of surface temperature of actuator body caused that second resonance of an actuator moves down to a lower frequency band and the performance of optical parts also deteriorates. Especially objective lens, coil and magnet of the actuator parts are easily damaged. To manage these thermal problems, in this paper an actuator with a hybrid blade, which is composed of vectra which has low thermal conductivity and magnesium which has high thermal conductivity, has been suggested and verified. Despite the high temperature environment, the proposed actuator showed good dynamic performance.

  • Luminescence properties of anthracene chromophores were investigated. Anthracene chromophores were incorporated in cyclosiloxane-based hybrid polymers through one-pot hydrosilylation reaction. Using four-armed cyclosiloxanes, divinylterminated siloxane monomers, and 9-vinylanthracenes, anthracene-labeled hybrid polymers were prepared. Free-standing hybrid polymer films were prepared successfully by doctor-blade method and thermal treatment. The polymer films exhibit strong blue fluorescence from anthracene and its fluorescence lifetime was not influenced by the temperature, indicating that the movement of anthracene chromophores was restrained in cyclosiloxane-based hybrid polymer films.

  • Interaction between the unsteady flow emitted from the blade of the centrifugal fan and the volute tongue region of fan duct is known as the main noise source of the centrifugal fan. In this paper, the relative contributions of the volute tongue region of the centrifugal fan is analyzed to utilize as the foundation data of low noise design. The internal hybrid CAA (Computational Aero-Acoustics) method is used to predict noise radiated from the main noise source. This method is the noise prediction technique using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), Acoustic analogy, and BEM(Boundary Element Method). The relative contributions of the centrifugal fan volute tongue region using the hybrid CAA method show that the region between the cut-off and the scroll has high contribution than the region between the cut-off and the outlet and the hub region of blade has high contribution than the shroud region of blade. These results is utilized as the important data for the development of low noise centrifugal fan.

  • An aerodynamic calculation in hover of KUH main rotor blade is performed using a three-dimensional unstructured hybrid mesh viscous flow solver. The flow solver utilizes a vertex-centered finite-volume scheme that is based on the Roe's flux-difference splitting with an implicit Jacobi/Gauss-Seidel time integration. The eddy viscosity are estimated by the Spalart-Allmaras one-equation turbulence model. A solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique is used for efficient capturing of the tip vortex. Calculations are performed at several operating conditions with varying collective pitch setting for KUH main rotor blade in hover. Good agreements are obtained between the present and other results using HOST and CAMRAD II in overall rotor performance. It is demonstrated that the present vertex-centered flow solver is an efficient and accurate tool for the assessment of rotor performance in hover.

  • A modeling method for the modal analysis of a multi-packet blade system having tapered cross section undergoing rotational motion is presented in this paper. Blades are idealized as tapered cantilever beams that are fixed to a rotating disc. The stiffness coupling effects between blades due to the flexibilities of the disc and the shroud are modeled with discrete springs. Hybrid deformation variables are employed to derive the equations of motion. To obtain more general information, the equations of motion are transformed into dimensionless forms in which dimensionless parameters are identified. The effects of the dimensionless parameters including tapered ratio and the number of packets as well as blades on the modal characteristics of the system are investigated with some numerical examples.

  • In the present study, unsteady flow analysis has been conducted to investigate the blade forces and wake flow around a hybrid street-lamp having a vertical-axis small wind turbine and a photovoltaic panel. Uniform velocities of 3, 5 and 7 m/s are applied as inlet boundary condition. Relatively large vortex shedding is formed at the wake region of the photovoltaic panel, which affects the increase of blade torque and wake flow downstream of the wind turbine. It is found that blade force has a good relation to the variation of the angle of attack with the rotation of turbine blades. Variations in the torque on the turbine blade over time create a cyclic fluctuation, which can be a source of turbine vibration and noise. Unsteady fluctuation of blade forces is also analyzed to understand the nature of the vibration of a small wind turbine over time. The detailed flow field inside the turbine blades is analyzed and discussed.

  • Temperature-dependent stress analysis and heat transfer analysis of a rotating gas turbine blade made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) are presented considering turbine operating temperature and ceramic particle size. The material properties of functionally graded materials are assumed to vary continuously and smoothly across the thickness of the thin-walled blade. For obtaining system stiffness reflecting these characteristics, the one-dimensional heat transfer equation is applied along the thickness of the thin-walled blade for determining the temperature distribution. Using the results of the temperature analysis, the equations of motion of a rotating blade are derived with hybrid deformation variable modeling method along with the Rayleigh-Ritz assumed mode methods. The validity of the derived rotating blade model is evaluated by comparing its transient responses and temperature distribution with the results obtained using a commercial finite element code. The maximum tensile stress with operating speed and gradient index are obtained. Furthermore, the gradient index that minimizes blade temperature was investigated.
