Mythicality and Anti-mythicality of Hunminjeongeum (『훈민정음』의 신화성과 반신화성 - 도상성을 중심으로)

  • The process of creating Hunminjeongeum described in Haerye version of Hunminjeongeum shows a rule of signification by which a signifiant represents a referent. In this article, I will suggest two types, the mythical and the anti-mythical, that affect the iconic relation between signifiant and referent, and consider how they are realized in Hunminjeongeum. The mythical type is shown as Yin-Yang and the Five Elements Theory and Three Elements Theory of Heaven, Earth and Man dominating the thought of intellectuals at that time. It had became mythos, that is the object of absolute belief, by connecting with the power of King at that time. It is very metaphysical and involves a kind of grand narrative. It is also the voice from the past in time and from China in space. It is reflected in Hunminjeongeum's letter system intactly. Meanwhile, the anti-mythical type also affects the creation of Icon in Hunminjeongeum. Even if Hunminjeongeum had been created from King Sejong's project, its intention seemed to be educational and practical. That is the problem of that time, not of past time, and for common class, not for ruling class. It can be considered as logos in that it had been planned and processed at a real-life situation at that time. Some arguments between King Sejong and liege Choi, Manri about the validity of Hunminjeongeum also show that the creation of Hunminjeongeum had involved the problem of critical logos. Above all, in that referents of Icons of Hunminjeongeum are the figures of human vocal organs, we can suggest that these Icons also implied an Indexicality implying actual connection between voice and body. It can be considered as a deconstrucion of metaphysics and grand narrative that had been dominated by foresaid mythical type. Hereafter, from time when Hunminjeongeum have been widely used, mythos of metaphysics and grand narrative that had dominated Hunminjeongeum have been deconstructed and Hunminjeongeum has become to realize its potential competence of pragmatic sign system for the convenience of common people. Therefore, I expect that the cultural potentiality of Hangul today can be realized by such tendency of logos incessantly deconstructing mythos, that is one direction of mythosemiosis.

Aparatus and Method for Inputting Chinese Based on Hunminjeongeum Using Korean Input Keyboard (기존 한글 키보드를 이용한 훈민정음 기반의 한글 병음 중국어 입력기 개발)

  • Chinese is the most spoken language in the world. However, because Chinese is a hieroglyphic language, using Chinese in a digital environment is very inconvenient. Chinese users are using Pinyin for Chinese input, but the phonetic representation of the Latin alphabet is not good. Hunminjeongeum has an excellent phonetic representation which can improve Chinese usage in digital environment. Therefore, it is possible to improve the use of Chinese by Chinese users in digital environment and to help Korean users who are learning Chinese. Therefore, this paper proposes a Chinese input method using Hunminjeongeum. In addition, we develop an input software using this input method and verify its effectiveness by evaluating usability.

  • This paper discusses several prerequisites for recording other languages by using Hunminjeongum (Hangeul). The scientific, systematic, and practical features of Hunminjeongum is undoubtedly obvious. Such a view of Hunminjeongeum is based on its iconicity, featural property and non-linearity. However, the existing conviction that Hunminjeongeum can transcribe all human sounds or that Hunminjeongeum is the only script which is easy for anyone to learn requires a more rigorous consideration. Given the fact that all scripts can be evaluated as equal, without one being more superior than the other, all scripts are optimized for recording the language in its own given linguistic context. Further, the function of a script is not just limited in a simple representation of a language. Adding new letters into the system of Hunminjeongeum or maintaining its current mode of notation can be problematic. First, it is important to solve computer-related issues: the registration of Hunminjeongum into the computer system as well as its output, problems regarding unicode, the new developments required for input devices, keyboards, fonts, and computer programs.

A Study on the Tales related to the Creation of 'Humninjeongeum' of Sinmi and the Way of their culture-convergence contents (신미의 '훈민정음' 창제 관련 설화와 문화융합의 콘텐츠 방안)

  • So far, it has been a general opinion that 'Hunminjeongeum' creation was made only by King Sejong himself under Jiphyeonjeon scholars' help. However, this paper stresses that 'Hunminjeongeum' was made not only by King Sejong but also by Sinmi's positive effort on King Sejong's secret order, and examines the possibility of the culture-convergence contents related to these tales as well. To reveal the ground, the method of this research was proceeded particularly focusing on following texts: Sejongsillok, Munjongsillok, Hangukbulgyojeonseo, etc. The result was as followings. 1) King Sejong's absolute trust in Sinmi, 2) Sinmi's outstanding linguistic talent in Sanskrit. 3) King Sejong's donation of Amitaba-Triad Buddha images to Bokcheonsa Temple and Sejong's granting a respecting title of 'Wugukise Hyeogakjonja' to Sinmi. 4) Sinmi's vow to educate and spread 'Hunminjeongeum' based on Buddhism, and 5) Sejo's visit Sinmi at Bokcheonsa Temple. Furthermore, if the tales related to 'Hunminjeongeum' creation are activated into a type of national or regional events or festivals without remaining simply in a story level, it would be a good way to spread the excellence of convergence K-culture with various culture contents.

Consideration of Issues on the Naming Application of Hunminjeongum Hangul Pronunciation (훈민정음 한글발음의 성명학 적용 논점 고찰)

  • The study aims to examine the rationality of the naming system with five properties of Korean pronunciation, which is used by most Korean name writer currently. A phonetic naming system is based on the premise that when a name is called, the sounds will have an audible effect on the speaker and the listener, and this phenomenon would ultimately have a good or bad influence on the owner of the name. The phonetic naming system is to name it by using five elements' coexistence and conflict of Korean pronunciation, and there are many progressing arguments that represent 'The Principles of Creation of Hunminjeongeum', 'The Historical Origin of Phonetic Naming System' and 'The Relevance of Modern Korean' etc. In the process of determining the validity of these arguments, distortion between the principles of creation of Hunminjeongeum and naming, a weak historical basis of the phonetic naming system, errors and problems in the usage of five elements of pronunciation, and fallacy of modern Korean phonology appear. For these reasons as above, the Korean phonetic naming system is concluded to be unreasonable, which claims not to be in line with the intention of creating Hunminjeongeum.

Hunminjeongeum Phonetics (II): Phonetic and Phoniatric Consideration for Explanation of Designs of Initial and Final Consonant Letters (훈민정음 음성학(II): 초성, 종성(닿소리) 제자해에 대한 음성언어의학적 고찰)

  • Hunminjeongeum had 17 initial consonant letters. Among them, five consonant letters, those are ㄱ (牙音, molar sound letter), ㄴ (舌音, lingual sound letter), ㅁ(脣音, labial sound letter), ㅅ (齒音, dental sound letter), ㅇ (喉音, guttural sound letter), were served as chief consonants. There was no argument that consonant letters were made by symbolizing the shape of vocal organs during phonation of them. It could be phoniatrically explained that all of five chief consonants were morphologically symbolized from left lateral view of vocal tract during articulation. Although 'ㄱ' was known as molar sound, it was not modeled the shape of molar tooth but modeled the shape of tongue at molar teeth bearing area. The same principle applies to 'ㅅ', and it was represented the shape of upper surface of anterior tongue instead of incisor teeth. 'ㄴ' was a lingual sound and directly shaped the shape of tongue. 'ㄷ' was made by addition of a stroke 'ㅡ' meaning hard palate above 'ㄴ'. 'ㅁ' was represented the shape of lateral view of anterior mouth. 'ㅇ' was looked like shaping left lateral view of laryngopharyngeal space.

Hunminjeongeum Phonetics (I): Phonetic and Phoniatric Consideration for Explanation of Designs of Middle Vowel Letters (훈민정음 음성학(I): 중성자(홀소리) 제자해에 대한 음성언어의학적 고찰)

  • Hunminjeongeum was made by the Great King Sejong, and composed of 17 consonant and 11 vowel letters. All the 28 letters were made according to the shape of vocal organ or space at the point of articulation for each letters. This review article focused on phonetic and phoniatric consideration for explanation of the designs of the middle vowel letters, especially three main vowel letters [ • (天, heaven), ㅡ (地, earth), ㅣ (人, human)] using video-fluoroscopic evaluation as well as computed tomography scanning, etc. During articulating / • / sound, a ball-like space at frontal portion of the oral cavity was found, tongue was contracted, and sound was deep (舌縮而聲深). During /ㅡ/ sound, a flat air space between oral tongue and hard palate was created. Tongue was slightly contacted neither deep nor shallow (舌小縮而聲不深不淺). During /ㅣ/ sound, tongue was not contacted and Sound is light (舌不縮而聲淺). Tongue was moved forward making longitudinal oro-pharyngeal air space. So, I'd like to suggest that we had better change the explanation drawing from a philosophical modeling to a more scientific modeling from real vocal tract space modeling during articulating middle vowels of Hunminjeongeum.

A Study on the Phonemic Analysis for Korean Speech Segmentation (한국어 음소분리에 관한 연구)

  • It is generally known that accurate segmentation is very necessary for both an individual word and continuous utterances in speech recognition. It is also commonly known that techniques are now being developed to classify the voiced and the unvoiced, also classifying the plosives and the fricatives. The method for accurate recognition of the phonemes isn't yet scientifically established. Therefore, in this study we analyze the Korean language, using the classification of 'Hunminjeongeum' and contemporary phonetics, with the frequency band, Mel band and Mel Cepstrum, we extract notable features of the phonemes from Korean speech and segment speech by the unit of the phonemes to normalize them. Finally, through the analysis and verification, we intend to set up Phonemic Segmentation System that will make us able to adapt it to both an individual word and continuous utterances.

  • It is an honour to be speaking on phonetics at the invitation of the Phonetic Society of Korea. Through the Korean Hangout script, invented in the fifteenth century at the instigation of the great King Sejong, and the work Hunminjeongeum which describes it, this country has an important place in the world history of phonetics. Phonetics is the description and analysis of pronunciation. Spoken language can be investigated at three points: in the speaker (articulatory phonetics), in the hearer (auditory phonetics), and in the physical speech signal (acoustic phonetics)... Beginners in English who are Korean mother tongue have to learn to make the sound 'f' as in "coffee", which is a voiceless labio-dental fricative, lip on upper teeth. They also have to learn to make [\theta]sound in "think", a voiceless dental fricative.
