Background: 'Here and now' in the 21st century, what should we be thinking about in this situation where infectious diseases like COVID-19 are penetrating deeply into our lives? At this point, this study aims to present the concept of 'Healing Humanities.' Purposes: If the Humanities as a liberal arts education have emphasized the value of 'communication and convergence,' putting it up as the slogan until now, the Humanities now should seek practical ways to realize their potentials. Methods: The research method was discussed centering on the literature. Results: This discussion centers around the medieval jewelry therapy by Hildegard von Bingen. That is, this study discusses how Hildegard presented gem therapy treatment as a pioneer in the jewelry therapy. Conclusions: It is meaningful that human health and diseases, which are focused on medical technology today, can now serve as a way of humanities practice, and that Hildegart's jewelry treatment can be triggered by a breakthrough. In that sense, this study aims to reveal the legitimacy of Hildegard's treatment to be secured as the Healing Humanities.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the classes of humanities and social sciences in the public health curricula. Methods: Data were collected through online received from 329 public health curricula from July to August, 2014. Categorized are introduction, management of hospital, medical health law, and ethics, patient psychology, others(communication, behavioral science, administration). The data were analyzed by a descriptive analyses and ${\chi}^2$-test(SPSS 12.0). Results: As a result of evaluate the classes of humanities and social sciences in the public health curriculum, 86.0% of department of occupational therapy, 71.4% of department of radiological technology and 72.6% of department of dental hygiene established more 4 classes. 92.1% of department physical therapy and 64.9% of department medical technology established more 5 credits. Numbers and credits of courses showed no differences by educational system. Conclusions: Humanities and social sciences are not popularly introduced in the most departments of public health sciences. Humanities and social sciences are very important and necessary for training competent future professionals in the public health sciences. So this study will provide the basic data for the introduction of humanities and social sciences in the public health curricula.

This study investigated the effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy on nerve regeneration in nerve injured rats. In this study, we used 30 male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 230-280g and 6 weeks old. Study groups were divided into two groups using a random sampling method: experimental group (n=15) treated with extracorporeal shock wave after sciatic nerve injury and control group (n=15) treated without extracorporeal shock wave after sciatic nerve injury. In this study, extracorporeal shock wave therapy equipment (OPTIMUS, SALUS TALENT 3, Korea) was used to apply extracorporeal shock wave therapy and applied to the sciatic nerve crush area of the right hind limb using low intensity. We measured the stance time and stride distance of the affected side using dartfish software. There was a statistically significant difference in the change of stance time and stride distance of the affected side between the experimental group using extracorporeal shock wave therapy and the control group without extracorporeal shock wave treatment. In conclusion, extracorporeal shock wave therapy has a positive effect on nerve regeneration.
Purpose: This study was conducted to review the curriculum and license examination of physical therapists in the United States. Methods: The doctor of physical therapy (DPT) curriculum was evaluated by a review Course Work Tool version 6 (CWT6) data and current physical therapy licensure examination (National Physical Therapy Exam, NPTE) category in the United States. Results: The results indicated that they were required to meet the doctor of physical therapist degree based on 'Guide to Physical Therapist Practice' of American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). This includes general education in the areas of communications and humanities, physical science, biological science, social and behavioral science, and mathematics. A minimum of one course must be completed successfully in each area of general education. Moreover, there should be at least 68 didactic credits of professional education and 22 clinical education credits, which is a minimum of two full-time clinical internships with no less than 1050 hours in total, which were supervised by a physical therapist. Regarding the physical therapy licensure examination, National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE, 2016) consisted of a physical therapy examination (26.5%), evaluation, differential diagnosis, baseline of prognosis (32.5%), intervention (28.5%), protection, responsibility, and research (6.5%) based on the 'Guide to Physical Therapist Practice'. Conclusion: Based on the study results provided above, it is considered a standard to meet domestic reality as the Guide to Physical Therapist Practice of APTA for South Korean physical therapists.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the emotional codes of Sijo, which has been acknowledged to have excellent therapeutic function, to activate the contents of the therapy of humanities. Sijo as a function of healing forms emotional codes of therapy, which is the total of emotions, through the fusion of emotions formed during the process of appreciation of various works. This process enables the literary therapeutic activities to proceed physiologically in the human body. Just as machine learning is self-learning by cognitive functions, the coding process for encoding and re-encoding at all times operates on collections of numerous neurons in the human system. In such a process, it is predicted that amino acids are synthesized in the human body by collective encoding of emotion codes. These amino acids regulate the signaling system of the human body. In the future, if the study on the healing process as such at the contact point of humanities and human physiology proceeds, it is expected that a program of higher quality humanistic therapy will be activated.

In the training field where literature is used as a tool, some excerpts from its text are used, instead of its full text. Therefore, it is necessary to have empirical guidelines for which part of the text should be used as Memory-Hint, a part that reminds its reader of certain memory, and for how the text can be introduced effectively. For the study, Hesse's whole life and his literary characters were examined from a therapeutic perspective. First, while Hesse's life was reviewed and his characters were analyzed, Hesse was recognized for Self-therapeutic Life. He also lived a life of multimedia in which he practiced writing, painting, playing musical instruments, meditation, walking, etc. Second, Contents of Literature Therapy using Hesse's works were applied to the schizophrenic patients. Media used for the clinical study were mostly extracted from Hesse's works. They began to show interest in others and express their empathy on others, in addition to expressing their sentimental empathy on Hesse's texts. How effectively Hesse utilized multimedia during his lifetime will be good literary resources in helping improving modern-day people's mental health and curing their pathological problems.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between theory of Confucian moral cultivation and meditation. Recently our community is more interested in 'a disease of mind'. A view of world, life, values which derived from the distorted perception of 'a disease of mind' can not be treated by psychiatric methods. In this sense, 'a disease of mind' is different from psychiatric illness. In this reason, alternative therapies applying philosophy, literature, arts, and humanities are attracting attention. Meditation is also one of them. In general, Meditation has been developed in Buddhism, but its method is closely related with Confucianism. Buddhist meditation has a pessimistic view of the reality in human life, but that of Confucian philosophy has laid stress on the reality and ego in human life. At this point, the Confucian meditation could provide a clue of solution for us in treatment of a disease of human mind. So Confucian moral cultivation and meditation have a great significance for the treatment of this disease as a methodology. In general, mental healing or psychotherapy has been proceeded by way of dialogue. 'Talking Cure' was conceived to let clients themselves recognize their current situation and find out the problem: "what happened and what's wrong" in their minds. But it does not have a high possibility of successful cure for subjects who are in the state of frustration, confusion, and lost of value. And also it is very difficult to apply to special institutions such as correctional institutions and military soldier who are targeted by current application of Humanities therapy. On this sense, it seems to be valuable to apply Confucian cultivation of mind and meditation which have emphasized the importance of mind-control for this. This study tries to examine theoretically how to relate the Confucian cultivation of mind with meditation, and to suggest a model of Humanities therapy that could be applied by Toe-gye's 『The Method on Preservation of Human mind(活人心方)』. Although Confucian cultivation of mind could present a meaningful theory for curing the disease of mind, it is very difficult to put the theory into practice. It is because Confucian cultivation of mind in itself is a kind of instruction that you need to do in all of your life, and essentially it is difficult to expect a temporary effect by performance or practice. So a cure model of Confucian cultivation of mind will be suggested on this assumption and limitations. This model is attempted on the main purpose of Humanities therapy in accordance with the development of a Korean model.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to review the current status of Complementary and Alternative medicine (CAM) in Canada, and derive its implications for Korean Medicine (KM). Methods : In order to understand the current status of CAM in Canada, a literature survey was conducted using academic databases such as PubMed, OASIS, RISS, and Google Scholar, and CAM regulations were identified through each state's legal website. Official documents provided on the Canadian government were referenced, and publications and official information were searched on the websites of related organizations. Results : In Canada, accredited CAM therapies include acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine, natural therapy, massage therapy, homeopathy, and chiropractic. Regulations on these therapies vary from state to state in Canada, but all have laws, and education, licenses, organizations, and insurance systems are also regulated. In particular, the education and licensing system for natural therapy and chiropractic are relatively strict, and as a result, therapists can use the name of a doctor. The authority of CAM therapists is based on education. Conclusions : CAM therapies authorized in Canada have systematic regulation, and therapists have also been legally granted expertise. It may be surmised that the accumulation of policy and clinical evidence is important as one of the ways to maintain the expertise of KM.
Objectives : The practice of bloodletting therapy has taken place for several millenia all over the world. The therapy is still one of the most popular oriental treatments in Korea. This paper studies bloodletting therapy in Huangdineijing to provide the Korean Medicine doctors with knowledge of the therapy to effectively utilize it in their clinics. Methods : The author studied all of the diseases treated by bloodletting therapy in Huangdineijing, and placed them into three categories: the visceral and bowel diseases, the meridian diseases, and miscellaneous diseases. The author reviewed reference documents that show clinical experiences of using the therapy and the results from the research on the therapy's therapeutic dynamics. Results : The treatment principals such as diagnostic methods, meridian points selection, acupuncture methods, and tools for the bloodletting therapy were provided. Most of the diseases treated by the therapy were identified by the visceral pattern identification or meridian pattern identification except miscellaneous diseases. The characteristics of the diseases treated by the therapy were studied and the diseases were placed into categories such as fever, pain, qi counterflow, first-aid, mental disease, and deep-seated disease. Theoretical basis of the mechanism of bloodletting therapy was drawn from several researches and a number of clinical theses related to bloodletting therapy. Conclusions : Results of this study on bloodletting therapy in Huangdineijing could be a useful knowledge for the Korean medicine doctors to be utilized their clinics. Future studies on this type of therapy should be performed to identify the diseases that may be effectively treated by bloodletting therapy.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of selective thoracic extensor strengthening exercises in the sitting position using a foam-roller by investigating the electromyographic(EMG) activities of the thoracic and lumbar extensors. Methods : Eighteen healthy subjects with no medical history of back pain were recruited. EMG activity was recorded from thoracic extensor(TE) and lumbar extensor(LE) while subjects performed three thoracic extension exercises: prone thoracic extension(PTE), prone thoracic extension with abdominal draw-in maneuver(PTE-ADIM), and sitting thoracic extension using a foam-roller(STE). TE and LE EMG activity, and TE/LE EMG activity ratio were analyzed by one-way repeated-measures analysis of variance(ANOVA). Where a significant difference was identified, a Bonferroni correction was performed(p<.017, .05/3). Results : TE and LE EMG activity, and TE/LE EMG activity ratio differed significantly among the three exercises(p<.05). Post hoc pair-wise comparison with Bonferroni correction showed that TE muscle activity in the STE exercise was significantly different from PTE and PTE-ADIM exercises(p<.017). There was no significant difference between TE muscle activity for PTE and PTE-ADIM exercises(p>.017). LE muscle activity and TE/LE ratios were significantly different among the three exercises p<.017). Conclusion : TE/LE ratio showed superior selective thoracic extensor strengthening for the STE exercise than PTE and PTE-ADIM exercises. Therefore, we recommend STE exercise for selective thoracic extensor strengthening.
