  • The reading activity of university students is the key element for the cultivation of creative human resources, and each university develops and performs the various cultural education and library program. Actually, the university libraries check the service periodically through library satisfaction surveys and the library user's actual condition survey to improve it, but the amount of reading, number of books lent and the rate of borrowers are still under expectation. Therefore, in this research, an in-depth analysis of lending books data for freshmen, as the service improvement and revitalization measures of university libraries for students, suggested the following: (1) the early education for the library users, (2) the opening of the students-participating library collections, (3) the use of the data using a library for the consulting with students (4) the establishment of the library depositary for education support, and (5) the introduction of the library CRM for individual student. Through this result, it would be substantially helpful for each university library (including two-year college), in which the number of lending books and the rate of borrowers are below expectations.

  • The history of recording and conserving for maintenance the human's memory from ancient times to modern's has brought about a lot of changing process of the recorded information media with developing in culture, and each society has made important recorded materials in his library as essentially the social apparatus. But most of them that were damaged by factors of the natural disaster, humidity, temperature, light, fungi and insects in the library, and were resulted in deterioration and losing the numerous materials. For removing the inevitable phases repeated, there are studying for counterplan of the fundamental environment factors about preservation, restoration and chemical research of materials in advanced countries, but I get a few researches about protecting the cultural properties. Therefore I research the survey of the actual conditions on 72 university libraries centering around them, and then I have researched the collection rate 81 percent, 58 university libraries. (local : 35, in seoul : 23) As the result of this research, I propose the model of the environment factors of conserving the library materials. 1) To apply the equipment of processing the radiant energy to the new construction and buildings. 2) To remove factors that occur fungi and insects by facilities being controlled relative humility, temperature, and to equip the ventilation arrangement in the library. 3) To shelve all acquired and bound materials after proceeding the vacuum fumigator. 4) Those who want to enter into the library stack were surely taken in sterilzing their hands and shoes, and must put on the gown. 5) To use the vacuum dusting thing (machine) for removing the dust without spreading out the floor of the library at any time. 6) To set up the gas automatic fire extinguisher worked by smoke sensor. 7) To assist the research into the preservation, natures and environment of recorded materials, and to supply financial funds for librarian. 8) To hold regularly the workshop be able to educate the methods of preservation materials by the constant system. (Library Association) 9) To add to responsibilities on certification of preservation materials for librarian. 10) To hold the constant committee system in each library. 11) To keep up with the ideal environment (humidity, temperature, light, ventilation, etc.) of preservation materials in the arrangement room, and to put on the gown.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic information necessary for establishing library development plan and service direction by comparing and analyzing the perception of librarian and user's public library. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 270 librarians and 820 public users of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Public Libraries regarding the current environment of the library, the role and status of the future library, and the library policy. The results showed librarians viewed the long history and accumulated information resources as strengths, while users had the highest satisfaction with human resources. As for the role of the public library and its future status, both librarians and users perceived reading and education as more important, confirming that the two groups had common expectations for public libraries. Yet the two groups had different perceptions about the policy for enhancing future library roles. Librarians suggested the needs for the improvement of old facilities and continuing education for librarians, users indicated the collections and enlargement of reading room as more important, which suggested the library policy development considering the difference of the perceptions between the two groups.

  • This study was performed in order to to suggest the library service direction and program provision method for single-person households in the Seoul Public Library. by analyzing the current status of the operation of public services and library services for domestic and foreign single-person households and the results of the survey on perception of library users and experts. As a result, the suggested library service direction for single-person households was proposed to secure and provide information resources closely related to the lives of single-person households, and establish a support center in charge of services to utilize human resources efficiently with local libraries, and create a user-centered facility infrastructure including single-person households away from the material-oriented library, provide regional specifications and customised services based on the characteristics and distribution of single-person households. In addition, the reading culture program for single-person households believes that social activities support for vulnerable single-person households, social ties, care, volunteer work, leisure and cultural activities are more necessary than anything else, and proposed specialized library services and programs for young, middle-aged, and female single-person households.

  • We investigated the applicability of the TEM-l ${\beta}$-lactamase fragment complementation (BFC) system to develop a strategy for the screening of protein-protein interactions in bacteria. A BFC system containing a human Fas-associated death domain (hFADD) and human Fas death domain (hFasDD) was generated. The hFADD-hFasDD interaction was verified by cell survivability in ampicillin-containing medium and the colorimetric change of nitrocefin. It was also confirmed by His pull-down assay using cell lysates obtained in selection steps. A coiled-coil helix coiled-coil domain-containing protein 5 (CHCH5) was identified as an interacting protein of human uracil DNA glycosylase (hUNG) from the bacterial BFC cDNA library strategy. The interaction between hUNG and CHCH5 was further confirmed with immunoprecipitation using a mammalian expression system. CHCH5 enhanced the DNA glycosylase activity of hUNG to remove uracil from DNA duplexes containing a U/G mismatch pair. These results suggest that the bacterial BFC cDNA library strategy can be effectively used to identify interacting protein pairs.

  • Human endoqenous retroviral long terminal repeats (LTRs) have been found to be coexpressed with sequences of genes closely located nearby. It has been suggested that the LTR elements have contributed to structural changes or genetic variations of human genome connected to various diseases and evolution. Using cDNA library derived from placenta tissue, we performed PCR amplification and identified five new HERV-W LTR elements. Those LTR elements showed a high degree of sequence similarity (98-99%) with HERV-W LTR (AF072500). A phylogenetic tree obtained by the neighbor-joining method revealed that HERV-W LTR elements could be mainly divided into two groups through evolutionary divergence. Five new HERV-W LTR elements (pla-1, 4, 5, 6, 7) belonged to the group I with AX000960, AF072504, and AF072506 from GenBank database. The data suggest that several copy numbers of the HERV-W LTR elements are transcribed in placenta and may contribute to the understanding of biological function such as human placental morphogenesis.

  • This study aims to suggest the ways to apply Information Commons to local university libraries, which face various changes in users and information environment, for using the libraries' space more effectively and for providing users with more satisfying services. Information Commons, which is a concept having been gradually spreading mainly in the U.S. from the early 1990's, is a service place where users can work out anything related to their studies or various lecture-related jobs because they are provided with various information and electronic resources in that one spot. Researches show that physical and human resources should be prepared before executing Information Commons to minimize the problems and to maximize the effectiveness from applying it. Physical resources are such as PC rooms, multimedia rooms, education rooms, one person or group study rooms, and cafe or lounge. Human resources are the librarians who can do reference services including giving the lectures on using library information resources and who can solve the operating problems related to IT.

  • The implication of space in school libraries more important than the other types of libraries because their main user is students who are affected by service environment. Let me consider the reality of our circumstance, the space is not enough in the school library, Therefore, it is essential to utilize of library space effectively. So, this study intends to suggest effective organization model of school library space, through introduced by the notion of information commons. The results show that they are integrated within school library, which, in addition to other functions, may include recreation center, and interactive community, circulation space, administrative offices and so on and suggest the library space design and management need to reflect the flexibility and inter-activeness of the space. Also, in order to acquiring human-centered aspect and openness, school library appropriate space planning for present needs and future expansion is imperative within school community.
