A geometry modification is one of main keys in achieving a successful optimization. The optimized hull form generated from the geometry modification should be a realistic, faired form from the ship manufacturing point of view. This paper presents a practical hull optimization procedure using a parametric modification function. In the parametric modification function method, the initial ship geometry was easily deformed according to the variations of design parameters. For example, bulbous bow can be modified with several parameters such as bulb area, bulb length, bulb height etc. Design parameters are considered as design variables to modify hull form, which can reduce the number of design variables in optimization process and hence reduce its time cost. To verify the use of the parametric modification function, optimization for KCS was performed at its design speed (FN=0.26) and the wave making resistance is calculated using a well proven potential code with fully nonlinear free surface conditions. The design variables used are key design parameters such as Cp curve, section shape and bulb shape. This study shows that the hull form optimized by the parametric modification function brings 7.6% reduction in wave making resistance. In addition, for verification and comparison purpose, a direct geometry variation method using a bell-shape modification function is used. It is shown that the optimal hull form generated by the bell-shaped modification function is very similar to that produced by the parametric modification function. However, the total running time of the parametric optimization is six times shorter than that of the bell shape modification method, showing the effectiveness and practicalness from a designer point of view in ship yards.

In the present study, a hydrodynamic hull-form optimization algorithm for a container ship was presented in terms of the minimum wave-making resistance. Bell-shaped modification functions were developed to modify the original hull-form and a sequential quadratic programming algorithm was used as an optimizer. The wave-making resistance as an objective function was obtained by the Rankine source panel method in which non-linear free surface conditions and the trim and sinkage of the ship were fully taken into account. Numerical computation was performed to investigate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed hull-form modification algorithm for the container carrier. The computational results were validated by comparing them with the experimental data.
From the singularity distribution which obtained by minimum wave resistance condition, optimum hull form is obtained by stream line trancing method as Inui and Pien did. Thus obtained hull form has a extruded bottom along a keel line. Therefore the hull form must be modified to have flat bottom. This modification process is conducted by putting a fictitious bottom. It is found out that the wave resistance does not significantly alter at design speed even though the hull form has remarkably changed at the bottom. Therefore flattening the bottom by the effect of depth may be more rational for practical hull form design than ordinary manual hull-form modification.
In this paper, we propose a systematic hull form variation technique which automatically satisfies the displacement constraint and guarantees a high level of fairness. This method is possible through multiple parameter correction curves. The present method is to improve the hull form variation method based on parametric modification function and consists of two sub-categories: SAC variation and section lines modification. For SAC variation, the utilization of two B-Spline curves satisfying GC1 condition led to the satisfaction of displacement constraint and high level of fairness at the same time. Section lines modification methods involves in using two fuctions: the first is the waterplane modification function combining two cubic splines. the other function is the sectional area modification function consisting of 2nd order polynomial over the DLWL(Design Load Waterline) and 3rd order polynomial below the DLWL, This function enables not only the fundamental U-V section shape variation but also systematically modified section lines. The present method is expected to be more useful in the hull form optimization process using CFD compared to the existing method.
Hull form generation and variation methods to be mainly discussed in this study are based on the fairness optimized B-Spline form parameter curves (FOBFC). These curves can be used both as indirect modification function for variation and as geometric entities for hull form generation. The flexibility and functionality of geometric control technique play the most important role for the success of hull form optimization. This study shows the hydrodynamic optimization process and the characteristics of optimum design hull forms of a 14,000TEU containership and 60K LPG carrier. SHIPFLOW has been used as a CFD solver and FS-Framework as a geometric modeler and optimizer.
Novel ships are commonly required iterative hull form modifications until she get reputation for new marine environment. Small FRP boats are manufactured in a identical shape with a mould. It implies that every modification step requires great time and expense which makes it difficult to improve the hull form promptly. Domestic hull form of small fishing boat of force has been evolved from the traditional hull form of developable shape. Utilizing this typical developable characteristics of small boats, ,New mouldless production method for FRP boat has been suggested and it is confirmed that the method is recommendable for a petty order of hull in evolving period of hull form development.
One of tuna longliners which have excellent operational record at the tropical Pacifical Ocean was selected as a parent hull form for the development of a new ship which could be operate at the high latitude northern Pacific Ocean. The parent hull was modified to adapt operational and enviromental condition of such a weather and sea states. This modification was carried out based on design experiences and model test results in towing tank. In this report modification techniques applied to the hull form design of a tuna longliner are summarized. The powering performance of the developed hull form is evaluated to show 19%, decrease of resistance campared with the parent hull form.

Thanks to the rapid advancement of computational power and development of numerical methods, Computational fluid dynamics techniques are being used widely for the prediction of ship resistance performance. In the present study, an automatic tool was developed to facilitate hull form modification, consequent mesh generation, and flow analysis for parametric study. It is a tedious job to go back and forth between geometry modification and mesh generation for every hull form variation. With the developed tool, users can make multiple hull form variation and their hull form performance prediction easily in a few simple steps. The verification of the developed tool was done by applying it to resistance performance parametric study of a generic POD propulsion cruise ship with different lengths of bow and stern. It is believed that the tool can be extended to more sophisticated hull form variation and help optimize the ship performance more efficiently.
Research on ship motion and seasickness is recognized as the important research area to ensure the pleasant operative environment in addition to the research of operation safety of ship. In this paper, The motion performance in waves for the training ship Kaya of Pukyong National University is obtained by using the computer program based on Strip method. To guarantee the pleasant seafaring in ocean, the vertical acceleration of ship motion is calculated according to the hull form modification. The results of calculation by changes of hull form are compared with the guideline of MSI(Motion Sickness Incidence). The degree of motion sickness is shown and discussed through the comparison between calculated vertical acceleration spectrum and MSI guideline.
