  • In modern Asia major cities had same problem with lack of affordable housing for families. So they had to concentrate to the mass supply of housing and made some physical counter effects like high density of cities, limitation of parking space. Also people who lived in those cities could suffer from broken traditional community culture. To rebuild traditional community and increase land usage, Block housing is suggested as a new kind of multi-family housing for old town redevelopment. Now some governments are trying to make urban code to give some initiative for new block housing development in old city blocks. They expect this new housing type can help to solve serious problems like lack of parking area, green space and context of block. Also they hope that block housing development can help to increase safety of town and reduce cost of development. The purpose of this study is to review the establishment and development process of Block Housing and to confirm the aspect which has been changed with urban organization together. Also this study tried to find out the intentional characteristics of similarities and differences with comparison of Korea and Japan. And as a result we could find critical physical viewpoint, and provide considerations for future study and plan. Several cases of block housing in Korea and Japan were reviewed for comparative study and Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) survey was examined to find satisfaction factors and problems which were expected to improved.

  • The purpose of this study is to scrutinize forefathers' standpoint on architectural planning by peering into their literature. Dongkukyisangkukjib which contains works about daily life of Lee Gyu-Bo, a great writer in the middle of Koryo, reveals well people of Koryo' thought on architecture, if we have a interest in a building space. The book holds his general viewpoint on architecture and documents about the remarkable houses he and his friends visited. Then we can know, through it, general thought on architecture of the upper classes in those days. Lee Gyu-Bo considered a house the other self of its owner and connected buildings with personality of their owner. 0 architectural process and architectural planning, buildings were shown variously by reflecting owner's value on architecture. Unlike Chosun era, people of Koryo prefer unlimited thinking to form or order. Therefore in construction especially such as a pavilion, there were many experimental tries which reflected owners' thought. Particularly we could estimate people of Koryo' conception of architectural design through a work of Lee Gyu-Bo, Saryunjungky, a document about a pavilion carrying four wheels, which describes concretely contents of architectural planning such as a planning of space, module, and intention.

  • This study tried to analyze the composition relation of a form in Korean traditional architecture through the viewpoint of visual perception and through the analysis by the number and quantity, and to analyze and implied relationship between the form composition of the traditional architecture and the principles of perception in the contemporary viewpoint by reviewing all the aspects on how to be perceived. Architecture has been studied in the relationship of the form and the space both existing together, so has Korean traditional architecture. But in the present condition with the construction norm of the traditional architecture-well known for its beauty in shape-and documents not existing, so that the study on Korean traditional architecture in the aspects of the form has to be undertaken on the basis of researching the existing architecture theoretically and architecture-relating documents actually. Therefore this study tries to review the mathematical principle and the ideological background of those days, and the attitude of ancestors treatment to the architecture by researching the existing architectural figure. Using mathematical analysis method with the basis of the above synthetically, this study aims at the analysis in the aspects of the visual perception on the form of Korea an traditional architecture.

  • This study was aimed at determining the characteristics of circular multi-family housing under the assumption that the shape of a residential building affects local identity. A total of six case studies were included in this study, three case studies on idle historical industrial facilities turned into residential buildings and another three on multi-family housing located in newly developed residential complexes. The study drew its conclusions as follows. First, the design of circular multi-family housing was intended to maximize security and defense from the outside in older times. This was later developed as the terrace house style with geometric urban squares designed under the urban planning of the Baroque period. This evolved high-density housing with a courtyard in the center offering a green open space, with the aim of restoring a sense of humanity. Second, the six case studies on circular multi-family housing were analyzed from the viewpoint of each factor of local identity, including historical and cultural, landscape, and community. Third, the historical and cultural elements of circular multi-family housing are found in some unused historical industrial facilities remodeled into residential buildings. They provide new capabilities and shapes desired by society at a given time, while maintaining familiar styles and elements of history, integrating a legacy of the past into the present. Fourth, circular multi-family housing with unique shapes and structures often become landmarks of a region with their distinctive appearance against a uniform urban environment and the monotonous scenery of residential complexes. They also show a high level of visual awareness with the distinctive shapes made possible when new elements are added to a historical exterior. Finally, circular multi-family housing with courtyards in the center prompt social contact between inhabitants, especially with dormitories and rental houses for the low-income bracket, which provide a small individual units with high use common space. Circular multi-family housing are planned in a manner similar to a small village or a city. They are designed to enhance sense of community, allocating various public amenities and provide cultural and commercial spaces on the ground floor and courtyard areas.

  • This study is a fundamental research which suggests some standards that can be used in selecting some advanced materials to be applied in housing space designs. The following conclusions have been drawn from the study. First, it has been discovered that as the residents' quality of life improved, the finishing materials emerged as an important element of housing spaces. It could also be seen that among the finishing materials used in housing spaces, there is recently a growing trend towards various environmentally-friendly advanced materials under the theme of 'the nature' and 'health'. As a result, the need to investigate the standards of discriminatory and efficient housing space designs using advanced materials is on the increase. Second, through the literature and precedent studies, the physical criteria of advanced materials have been classified into five categories: new technology, new manufacturing methods, new materials, complementation and applicability. The main criteria of advanced finishing materials for housing spaces have been classified into four main categories: durability, functionality, economical efficiency and sensibility. By collecting and classifying some key words according to each of these four categories, the representative or combinable features have been extracted. By organizing the advanced materials' physical criteria and their details, some standards based on the physical aspects have been suggested. The features of the finishing materials in consideration of advanced materials have been reclassified into the user-based criteria, environmental criteria and spatial criteria. Through this method, the criteria have been brought up from a new viewpoint, establishing the standards for the advanced materials applicable to housing spaces. Finally, after assessing the criteria by analyzing the advanced materials currently known to be applicable in housing spaces, it has been concluded that the criteria can be used as the fundamental standards. As this study is based on investigating the literature and data, it may be less than reasonable to generalize from the limited number of examples. Hence, it shall be important to make a profound study of some detailed criteria by suggesting more objective standards and analyzing a greater variety of advanced materials.

  • Urbanization has caused population influx into cities, creating housing problems, and housing developmental plans have often resulted in high-rise and high-density housing complexes. Such development have seldom incorporated the environmental factors associated with the complexes and the surroundings, just being busy in increasing the volume of the housing supplies, and as a result, various environmental problems, such as disruption of the air flow, reduction of sunlight exposure amount, and temperature rise, have occurred, deteriorating the living environments. Accordingly, the objectives of this paper are to find out the causes of the problems in the contemporary complex development plans from the urban environmental viewpoint through the investigative analysis of microclimate environment in those complexes, and, further, to present a residential complex planning technique and developmental direction so as to remedy the problems described above. Then a 3-D microclimate model 'Envi-Met' was employed to analyze and predict on the related issues, per the selected planning factors.
