TRADITIONAL PIG FARMING IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC: PROBLEMS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY

  • The project was undertaken to provide information on the present system of traditional pig farming in the South Pacific region, to identify the problems currently limiting productivity of such pigs and to offer practical strategies which could be used for increasing productivity of the animals. The problems were identified by surveying some 220 subsistence pig farms in eleven island countries in the South Pacific region using a prepared questionnaire. The units were found to be generally small, consisting of about 2-4 sows per herd. The productivity of the units as assessed in terms of sow reproductive efficiency was rather low, being only about 7.5. Feed, housing, breeding, disease, marketing, lack of capital, technical know-how and existing social traditions were identified as current constraints. Based on three of the most limiting factors identified namely feed, housing and breeding, strategies for improvement were developed on the basis of better and more effective use of locally available feed resources, better housing and genetic improvement through crossbreeding programmes. These improvement strategies were tested as a package model on some ten farms in two of the island countries. The results of these on-farm trials indicated that using the improvement strategies increased sow reproductive efficiency by approximately 60 percent, to nearly 12. The significance of these findings in the overall management of traditionally raised pigs in the South Pacific region is discussed.

A Study on Classification of Effect Measurements of Community Garden (공동체 텃밭의 효과 측정을 위한 항목 유형화 연구)

  • Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization in Korea urban environmental problems such as changes in climate and shortage in green spaces and social problems such as lacks of interactions with neighbors have occurred and community garden appeared as one means to solve such problems. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively identify the evaluation items to measure the effect of community gardens. This study comprehensively researched the evaluation items through literature studies of domestic and overseas documents and verified their contents through case studies of domestic site. As a result of this study, a total of 39 measurement items for evaluation was identified and these items were divided into five large categories of "eco-environmental effect," "production and economic effect," "physical effect," "psychological effect," and "social effect" and these categories could be subdivided into 12 types. This study can be used as references for positively introducing the community gardens in Korea and has a meaning that it can be developed as an analyzing tool for measuring the concrete effects of community gardens when they are introduced in Korea in large numbers hereafter.

Issues and Perception on Management Fee and Rental Payment Overdue of Permanent Rental Housing Residents (영구임대주택 입주자의 관리비 및 임대료 체납 실태와 의식)

  • Permanent rental housing, the construction of which was strongly financed by the central government, is regarded as a social housing for those who fall within the lowest income bracket. Differing from "public rental housing", offered to tenants for sale after a five year rental period, this type of housing is intended for rental use on a long-tenn basis. At present, about 190,000 permanent rental housing units exist in Korea. According to a statistics, 15.6% of its residents did not pay their management fee and rental payment in 4 or more months in 2005, which places stress on the housing management. Based on the "eviction condition" stipulated in the tenancy agreement for permanent rental housing, a householder owning assets or a vehicle which is not used as his means of living, who is overdue with his management fee and rental payment for a long time, may be evicted from the house. However, there are many conflicts and problems between administrators/housing managers and residents in the process of enforcing this regulation. The purpose of this study is to explore the key issues associated with the present situation and the reasons why so many management fee and rental payment for permanent rental housing are overdue. For the purpose of research, data were collected from 10,990 permanent rental housing residents nationwide via a questionnaire survey in February 2007. One third of the respondents had an experience of more than 2 months overdue since they have moved in current residence. For further analysis, the respondents were divided into three groups, based on their working ability. The major finding showed that the group of respondents who have working ability required a more practical plan, such as employment, to have a sustainable life, while the other group of no labor force indicated a need for more housing allowance from the government. To suggest more specific alternatives for the subject of housing payment overdue, further comparison study should be performed between the residents of permanent rental housing and other low income tenants in private housing sector.

  • The purpose of this study is to find a way of solving on parking problems at apartment complex through the trend analysis research of the parking demands according to the housing unit size. The subjects of this study are high-rise apartment complexes in Daegu city which are constructed within 10 years. The parking demand according to the housing unit size at apartment complexes had been surveyed every July for 4 years from 2000 to 2003. Specially, we knew that the parking demand of $85 m^2$ below sized housing unit at apartment complex was exceeded architectural regulation of parking supply, and the parking demand of $85 m^2$ over sized housing unit at apartment complex was kept within architectural regulation of parking supply. And, the estimating formula that can predict the future parking demand by the trend analysis according to the housing unit size at apartment complexes in Daegu city was gotten through this study. But, in order to get more accurate estimating formula, it should be based on data of funker research and investigation about apartment complexes and it should be studied continuously.

  • Recent changes in the dynamics of national economies, market liberalization, changes in technologies and movement of capital have had a major effect on the Asian Pacific region since the early 1990's, as there has been an increasing role for foreign housing developers in those countries that experienced economic liberalization, high urbanization rates and reforms in the housing sectors. Recently the cosmopolitan cities of Indonesia attracted a global interest due to its rapid economic development and great potential of population and natural resources. New town development emerged as one of the solutions to reduce urbanization problems in Indonesia. This study aims to explore the contemporary planning principles of new town developments in representative new town projects supplied by of major housing development companies in Indonesia. We conducted case study on the new town named Kota Baru Parahyangan, which is located in outskirt of Bandung, the third biggest city in Indonesia and supplied by PT. Belaputra Intiland. As a result of this study, we can identify unique characteristics of new town development in Indonesia.

  • In the upcoming 21st century, we predict change and development in various aspects. Some fundamental causes of change in housing lifestyles such as the change in family make-up are gradually becoming more and more realistic problems as the society is shifting to the younger generation family make up refer to the rapid increase of the agedpopulation, growth of single households, the drop in the number of family members, the change in the economic situation and technology level, and change in values. The purpose of this research is to, more away from the standardized supply of housing and to approach apartment housing plans in multilateral aspects, compare and analyze the difference between the housing demands of different generations and the influence that the current housing type has on demand forecasting by case studies of Unit Living Space planning that we will utilize the participating design method in which parents and children took part in.

The Maintenance Guideline of Long-Life Housing for the Manager(I) (장수명 공동주택의 관리자 유지관리 지침(I))

  • The general housing causes various environmental problems on the squandering of the resources and the production of the construction wastes, as it was removed and rebuilt because of the short-life in 20-30 years after constructing. The short-life of the general housing makes the rebuilt-term short and takes a negative attitude in maintenance. In the other hand, the long-life housing is constantly dwelling house that considers the carbon reduction among the world issues, Support and Infill. The long-life housing promotes the durability of Support and maximize the variability of Infill through separation of Support & Infill. It's useful dwelling house in maintenance as well as various life-cycle and life style. As the maintenance guideline of dwelling house is used for long-life housing, there is not distinction considering who controls maintenance and there is not conception considering alteration, variability and convenience. Consequently, it is required to develop the proper maintenance guideline applied maintenance process for long-life housing. Therefore this study shows efficient maintenance guideline for manager in long-life housing.

Approaches to and Issues in Research on Multi-Cultural Family Homes (다문화가정 주거의 연구를 위한 접근방법과 쟁점)

  • As cultural diversity has gained a great deal of attention and the social fabric of Korean society is redefined, the number of studies on multi-cultural family homes has been growing in the area of human ecology, but relevant research is rarely found on the subject of housing. While the emphasis of housing research is on multidisciplinary approaches and empirical research is highly valued, a theoretical and methodological platform for discussing the new rising agenda of multi-cultural family homes is lacking. The purpose of this study was to explore approaches to and to discuss the issues in research for multi-cultural family homes in terms of housing theories and multidisciplinary approaches. To understand the housing related needs of multi-cultural families, this study highlights social constructionism, the ecological perspective, and feminist epistemology. These three multidisciplinary approaches were useful for generating an ontological analysis of multi-cultural family homes. Further, this study highlights two housing related theories, the microsociological and housing pathways approaches, for dealing with multi-cultural family homes. In conclusion, the five approaches were useful for exploring issues in housing research on multi-cultural family homes with appropriate research methods like hermeneutics, quantitative, and qualitative methods, and field research. Insights into using perspectives and holistic approaches might be useful for solving the problems of multi-cultural family homes in Korea.

A Study on the Problems in the Consumption Life of Household Over Family Life Cycle (가족생활주기에 따른 가계의 소비생활문제에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the problems in the consumption life of household over the family life cycle so that they would support to select the consumer education subjects and the establish the long-term household plan. For these purposes, a survey was conducted using questionnaire. The data used in this study included 562 homemakers living in Seoul. Statistics used for data analysis were frequency distribution, Mean, Percentile, One-way Anova, Scheffie-test, Multiple Classification Analysis. Major findings were as follows; 1) In the level of the problems in the consumption life of household, housing problem, durable goods problem, healthy-medical problem and child education problem area were in the low level. Leisure problem and properties management problem area were in the high level. 2) The problems in the consumption life of household differed significantly over the family life cycle. 3) When controlling family monthly income and education level of husband was compared with not-controlling them, the influences of family life cycle on the problems in the consumption life were as follows. (1)At housing problem area, the effect of the FLC was higher in controlling them than not-controlling them. (2) At other problems the effects of the FLC was lower or same in controlling them than not-controlling them.

  • In Korea, there has been a tendency that multi-family housings are constructed by providers such as constructors or real estate agents for the economical benefits and selling efficiency, using standardized plans, load-bearing wall system, water-based construction method, and uniformized formworks. Especially, the traditional installation works which service equipments are buried into structures cause serious problems such as shortening building life span, increasing times of remodeling during specific period (100 years) and wasting resources. Also the unilateral way of massive distribution by providers for multi-family housings is not appropriate to meet the various social needs of residents. To solve these problems, it is necessary to build long-life housing which can be easily separated installations, interior and exterior finishings from structural parts. Therefore, this paper will examine the present administrative law and the civil law in order to find negative factors that can be obstructions for providing long-life housings and set the direction to revise the regulations.
