  • We estimate how much KEPCO can save their loss and how much social welfare can be increased by applying the real-time pricing instead of current regulated retail price in the electricity market in order to analyze the problem of the regulated retail price which is fixed below the marginal cost. We estimate the demand functions of peak time and off-peak time in summer (June to August) and winter (December to February). We construct the supply function based on hourly step-wise linear marginal cost functions, too. We find that the increase of social welfare will be 67 billion won in summer if the fixed retail price is changed into the real-time pricing scheme. The total 705 billion won will be transferred from consumer surplus to producer surplus and the rest (67 billion won) will be saved from the reduction of deadweight loss among KEPCO's loss. In winter, the increase of social surplus will be 225 billion won and 1,174 billion won of KEPCO's loss will be transferred from consumer surplus. As a result, we conclude that the regulation of the retail price in the electricity market induces the social welfare loss and KEPCO suffers a huge loss.

  • Studies were carried out at the National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, India to determine the effect of feeding chopped paddy straw (Oryza sativa) on the energy expenditure in crossbred cattle. Four crossbred cattle male, aged 5-6 years and weighing about 450 kg were used for this study. Three experimental trials, one each for the feeding of un-chopped paddy straw offered ad libitum (UCA), chopped paddy straw fed at restricted level (CR) and chopped paddy straw offered ad libitum (CA) were conducted. The quantity of un-chopped paddy straw consumed during UCA was assumed as the voluntary intake by the cattle and the same quantity was offered after chopping during CR. Each trial comprised of 21 d preliminary feeding period and 5 d of observation recording period. Expired gas was collected in Douglas bags using a face-mask and three-way valve at 6 hourly intervals i.e., at 09.30, 15.30, 21.30, and 03.30 h throughout the observation period. Expired gas and ambient air inspired by the animals were analyzed for the oxygen content through paramagnetic oxygen analyzer. Energy expenditure (EE) by the animals was calculated by determining the volume of oxygen consumed per minute (STP) and multiplying by 4.825. Paddy straw used in all the three trials contained (g/kg DM) 90.0 CP, 786 OM, 700 NDF, 489 ADF, 357 Cellulose and 60.0 ADL. Metabolizable energy (ME) was 6.9 MJ/kg DM. Dry matter intake (DMI) both in UCA and CR was about 6.8 kg, except that it was chopped in CR. Chopping has resulted in 32% improvement (9 kg) in DMI of CA as compared to that of UCA. Although ME intake was similar in UCA and CR (47.2 MJ/day), energy expenditure (EE) was higher in UCA (23.3 MJ) when compared to that of CR (19.5 MJ). The ME intake (63.3 MJ) as well as EE (27.1 MJ) was highest in CA. Energy expenditure when expressed as MJ/kg DMI was 3.48, 2.90 and 3.12; whereas as per cent of ME intake it was 50, 41 and 44 in UCA, CR and CA respectively. Our study has unequivocally confirmed that chopping of poor quality roughages like paddy straw has definite advantages not only in terms of improving the intake by decreasing the time taken for ingestion but also in reducing the energy cost of eating.

  • When domestic sewage and rainwater runoff are discharged into a single sewer pipe, it is called a "combined sewer system." The sewage design standards in Korea specify the flow velocity based only on the volume of rainfall; therefore, sedimentation occurs on non-rainy days owing to the reduced flow rate and velocity. This sedimentation reduces the discharge capacity, causes unpleasant odors, and exacerbates the problem of combined sewer overflow concentration. To address this problem, the amount of sewage on non-rainy days, not just the volume of rainfall, should also be considered. There are various theories on sedimentation in sewer movement. This study introduces a self-cleansing velocity based on tractive force theory. By applying a self-cleansing velocity equivalent to the critical shear stress of a sand particle, sedimentation can be reduced on non-rainy days. The amount of sewage changes according to the water use pattern of citizens. The design hourly maximum wastewater flow was considered as a representative value, and the velocity of this flow should be more than the self-cleansing velocity. This design method requires a steeper gradient than existing design criteria. Therefore, the existing sewer pipelines need to be improved and repaired accordingly. In this study, five types of improvement and repair methods that can maximize the use of existing pipelines and minimize the depth of excavation are proposed. The key technologies utilized are trenchless sewer rehabilitation and complex cross-section pipes. Trenchless sewer rehabilitation is a popular sewage repair method. However, it is complex because the cross-section pipes do not have a universal design and require continuous research and development. In an old metropolis with a combined sewer system, it is difficult to carry out excavation work; hence, the methods presented in this study may be useful in the future.

  • Temperature-associated emergence patterns for a hydropsychid caddisfly, Hydropsyche kozhantschikovi, were studied from the Wangsuk creek in Kyonggi-do from April to June in 1999. Emerging adults were quantitatively collected by pyramidshaped emergence traps. Water temperature was hourly monitored in 1999. The emergence began at April 15 when the daily mean water temperature rose to ca. $10^{\circ}C$: it rapidly increased and peaked in ca. 10 days, and continued to May 25, lasting 40 days since the starting date. The average number of emerged adults was $35.8\;inds./m^2$ and their sex ratio was male (M) : female (F) = 1 : 2.04. The emergence of males was ca. 2 days earlier than that of females. Daily, the emergence was a bigeminans pattern representing the major peak (66.7%) just after dark ($19:00{\sim}21:00$) and theminor peak (11.1%) just before dawn ($05:00{\sim}07:00$). According to our degree dayaccumulation (DD) model, it respectively required 453.89DD (M: 440.48DD and F: 473.97 DD), 615.71DD (M: 610.18DD and F: 622.09DD), and 820.24DD (M: 828.25DD and F: 804.71DD) to begin, to reach the peak, and to finish the emergence.

  • Process-based crop models have been used to assess the impact of climate change on crop production. These models are implemented in procedural or object oriented computer programming languages including FORTRAN, C++, Delphi, Java, which have a stiff learning curve. The requirement for a high level of computer programming is one of barriers for efforts to develop and improve crop models based on biophysical process. In this study, we attempted to develop a Chinese cabbage model using Microsoft Excel with Visual Basic for Application (VBA), which would be easy enough for most agricultural scientists to develop a simple model for crop growth simulation. Results from Soil-Plant-Atmosphere-Research (SPAR) experiments under six temperature conditions were used to determine parameters of the Chinese cabbage model. During a plant growing season in SPAR chambers, numbers of leaves, leaf areas, growth rate of plants were measured six times. Leaf photosynthesis was also measured using LI-6400 Potable Photosynthesis System. Farquhar, von Caemmerer, and Berry (FvCB) model was used to simulate a leaf-level photosynthesis process. A sun/shade model was used to scale up to canopy-level photosynthesis. An Excel add-in, which is a small VBA program to assist crop modeling, was used to implement a Chinese cabbage model under the environment of Excel organizing all of equations into a single set of crop model. The model was able to simulate hourly changes in photosynthesis, growth rate, and other physiological variables using meteorological input data. Estimates and measurements of dry weight obtained from six SPAR chambers were linearly related ($R^2=0.985$). This result indicated that the Excel/VBA can be widely used for many crop scientists to develop crop models.

  • Changes in precipitation due to climate change is made to induce the local and intensive rainfall, it is increasing damage caused by inland inundation. Therefore, it requires a technique for predicting damage caused by flooding. In this study, in order to determine whether this flood inundated by any route when the levee was destroyed, Which can simulate the path of the flood inundation model was developed for the SIMOD (Simplified Inundation MODel). Multi Direction Method (MDM) for differential distributing the adjacent cells by using the slope and Flat-Water Assumption (FWA)-If more than one level higher in the cell adjacent to the cell level is the lowest altitude that increases the water level is equal to the adjacent cells- were applied For the evaluation of the model by setting the flooding scenarios were estimated hourly range from the target area. SIMOD model can significantly reduce simulation time because they use a simple input data of topography (DEM) and inflow flood. Since it is possible to predict results within minutes, if you can only identify inflow flood through the runoff model or levee collapse model. Therefore, it could be used to establish an evacuation plan due to flooding, such as EAP (Emergency Action Plan).

  • This study applied conditional merging (CM) spatial interpolation technique to obtain the satellite and in-situ composite soil moisture data. For the analysis, 24 gages of hourly in-situ data sets from the Rural Development Administration (RDA) of Korea and the satellite soil moisture data retrieved from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth observing system (AMSR-E) were used. In order to verify the performance of the CM method, leave-one-out cross validation was used. The cross validation result was spatially interpolated to figure out spatial correlation of the CM method. The results derived from this study are as follow: (1) The CM method produced better soil moisture map over Korean Peninsula than AMSR-E did for the over 100 days out of total 113 days considered for the analysis. (2) The method of CM showed high correlation with gage density and better performance on the western side of Korean peninsula due to high spatial gauge density. (3) The performance of CM is not affected by the non-rainy season unlike to AMSR-E data is. Overall, the result of this study indicates that the CM method can be applied for predicting soil moisture at ungaged locations.

  • Extreme events of rainfall has increased mainly from climate change, resulting in more severe floods intensified by land use development. Appropriate estimation of design floods gets more attention to ensuring the safety of life and property in flood-prone areas for hydraulic structures such as dams and levees. In the current study, we reestimated the design flood of the Nam River Dam to adopt the influence of climatic change of hydrometeorological variables including recent datasets of extreme rainfall events. The climate change scenarios of extreme rainfall events in hourly scale that has been downscaled was used in analyzing the annual maximum rainfall for the weather stations in the Nam River Dam basin. The estimates of 200-year and 10,000-year return periods were calculated to provide a design flood and a probable maximum flood case for the Nam River Dam. The results present that the new estimate employing the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 downscaled data is much higher than the original design flood estimated at the dam construction stage using a 200-year return period. We can conclude that the current dam area might be highly vulnerable and need an enhancement of the dam safety regarding the reduction of damage in Sachen bay from the outflow of Nam River Dam.

  • In this study, EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) model was used to simulate the salinity distribution for sea water inflow and rainfall runoff. The flowrate was given to the boundary conditions, which can be calculated by areal-specific flowrate method from the measured flowrate of the representative outfall. The boundary condition of the water elevation can be obtained from the hourly tidal elevation. The flowrate from the outfall can be calculated using the condition of the 245 mm raifall. The simulation results showed that at Sites 1~2 and the Mangsan island (Site 4) the salinity becomes 0 ppt after the rainfall. However, the salinity is 30 ppt when there is no rainfall. Time series of the salinity changes were compared with the measured data from January 1 to December 31, 2010 at the four sites (Site 2~5) of Yongwon channel. Lower salinities are shown at the inner sites of Yongwon channel (Site 1~4) and the sites of Songjeong river (Site 7~8). The intensive investigation near the Mangsan island showed that the changes of salinity were 21.9~28.8 ppt after the rainfall of 17 mm and those of the salinity were 2.33~8.05 ppt after the cumulative rainfall of 160.5 mm. This means that the sea water circulation is blocked in Yongwon channel, and the salinity becomes lower rapidly after the heavy rain.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different feeding level of TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients) on the generation of main greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane in Hanwoo cows. The diet TDN (kg) adjusted to achieve ADG of 0 g/day (Control), 200 g/day (T1), and 400 g/day (T2) of the maintenance level TMR (Total Mixed Ration) delivered twice a day at 08:30 and 17:30. Cow are housed in a respiration chamber and the environmental temperature was maintained at $20^{\circ}C$. The gases were measured for 24 hours using the multi-detector instrument Mamos-300. The analyzed methane emissions of T1 and T2 were 33.5% and 69.6% higher than control, respectively, and the carbon dioxide emissions were 21.1% and 40.6% higher than control. Also, the hourly pattern of carbon dioxide and methane production were showed very similar emission. Gas production showed peak after 1 hour of feeding and this gap was wider in the afternoon than in the morning hours. It is clearly conducted that $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ emissions were different by limited intake levels of feed.
