In-Situ SEM Observation and DIC Strain Analysis for Deformation and Cracking of Hot-Dip ZnMgAl Alloy Coating

  • An attempt was made to apply digital image correlation (DIC) strain analysis to in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of bending deformation to quantify local strain distribution inside a ZnMgAl-alloy coating in deformation. Interstitial-free steel sheets were hot-dipped in a Zn-3Mg-6Al (mass%) alloy melt at 400 ℃ for 2 s. The specimens were deformed using a miniature-sized 4-point bending test machine inside the SEM chamber. The observed in situ SEM images were used for DIC strain analysis. The hot-dip ZnMgAl-alloy coating exhibited a solidification microstructure composed of a three-phase eutectic of fine Al (fcc), Zn (hcp), and Zn2Mg phases surrounding the primary solidified Al phases. The relatively coarsened Zn2Mg phases were locally observed inside the ZnMgAl-alloy coating. The DIC strain analysis revealed that the strain was localized in the primary solidified Al phases and fine eutectic microstructure around the Zn2Mg phase. The results indicated high deformability of the multi-phase microstructure of the ZnMgAl-alloy coating.

FATIGUE STRENGTH OF FILLET WELDED STEEL STRUCTURE UNDER OUT-OF-PLANE BENDING LOAD

  • The effect of out-of-plane loads on the fatigue strength of welded steel structures is examined through fatigue tests with weldment of two fillet weld joint types. The results of the fatigue tests are compared with those under axial loads, on the basis of the hot spot stress range at the weld toe. From the result of the comparison, a method on how to incorporate the effect of the out-of-plane bending stress is proposed using design S-N curves derived from fatigue tests under the axial load. The proposed method is useful for rational assessment of the fatigue strength of fillet-welded structures, where combined stresses of the in-plane axial stress and the out-of-plane bending stress are induced simultaneously due to the complexity of applied loads and structural geometry.

사각단면 금속곡관 제품의 열간압출 굽힘가공에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Hot Metal Extrusion Bending Process for the Rectangular Curved Tube)

  • The bending process for the rectangular curved tube can be developed by the hot metal extrusion machine with the multiple punches moving in the different velocity. The bending phenomenon can be controlled by the two variables, the one of them is the difference of velocity at the die exit section by the different velocity of billets through the multi-hole container. The other is the difference by the different hole diameter. The results of the experiment show that the rectangular curved tube can be formed by the extrusion process and that the curvature of the curved product can be controlled by the velocity of punch and the diameter of container hole and that the defects such as the distortion of section and the thickness change of the wall of tube and the folding and wrinkling of thin tube did not happen after the bending processing by the extrusion bending machine.

  • The bending process for the curved tube can be developed by the hot metal extrusion machine with the multiple punches moving in the different velocity. The bending phenomenon has been studied to be occurred by the different of velocity at the die extrusion. The difference of velocity at the die exit section can be obtained by the different velocity of billets through the multi-hole container and by the welding of billets inside the porthole die chamber. The multiple billets are moving differently by the multiple extrusion punches controlled by PLC with the servo mechanism units. The results of the experiments show that the curved tube can be bended by the extrusion process and that the defects such as the distortion of section and the thickness change of thick tube, tile folding and wrinkling of thin tube can not be shown after the bending processing by the extrusion bending machine.

  • The efficiency of thermoelectric devices for different applications is known to depend on the thermoelectric effectiveness of the material which tends to grow with the increase of its chemical homogeneity. Thus an important goal for thermal devices is to obtain chemically homogeneous solid solutions. In this work, the new process with rapid solidification (melt spinning method) followed by hot pressing was investigated to produce homogeneous material. Characteristics of the material were examined with HRD, SEM, EPMA-line scan and bending test. Property variations of the materials were investigated as a function of variables, such as dopant ${CdCl}_{2}$ quantity and hot pressing temperature. Quenched ribbons are very brittle and consist of homogeneous $Bi_2Te_3$, ${Bi}_{2}{Se}_{3}$ solid solutions. When the process parameters were optimized, the maximum figure of merit was 2.038$\times$$10^{-3}K^{-4}. The bending strength of the material hot pressed at 50$0^{\circ}C$ was 8.2 kgf/${mm}^2$.

  • Coating of Hot-dip galvannealed steel consists of various Fe-Zn intermetallic compounds. Since the coating is hard and there for is very brittle, the surface of steel sheet is easy to be ruptured during second manufacturing processing. This is called as powdering. In addition, forming equipment might be polluted with debris by powdering. Therefore, various research have been carried out to prohibit powdering fur improving the quality of GA steel. This paper carried out finite element analysis combined with damage model which simulate the failure of local layer of hot-dip galvannealed steel surface during v-bending test. Since the mechanical property of intermetallic compound was unknown exactly, we used the properties calculated from measurements. The specimen was divided into substrate, coating layer and interface layer. Local failure at coating layer or interface layer was simulated when elemental strain reached a prescribed strain.

대나무 Zephyr 보드의 제조에 있어서 열압시간과 열압온도가 보드성능에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Hot-Pressing Time and Temperature on Properties of Bamboo Zephyr Boards)

  • 본 연구에서는 대나무 Zephyr 보드에 있어서 열압조건이 보드의 성능에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 다양한 열압시간과 열압온도를 적용하여 보드(목표밀도 0.7 g/cm3, 400×400×12 mm)를 제조하고 그 기본적인 물성을 비교, 검토해 보았다. 제조된 보드는 KS F 3104와 KS F 3113에 준하여 성능평가를 하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 보드의 상태 휨강도는 열압조건에 관계없이 전반적으로 상당히 높은 값을 나타내었으며 그 중 span에 대한 평행 방향에 있어서는 열판온도 160℃에서 12분 동안 열압하여 제조한 보드가 가장 높은 강도를 보였다. 보드의 박리강도 시험에서는 모든 열압시간에서 열압온도가 높을수록 상대적으로 더 높은 값을 나타내었으며, 그 결과 200℃에서 압체된 보드가 가장 높은 강도를 보였다. 보드의 습윤 휨강도 시험에서는 총 열압시간 12분과 10분일 때 각각 160℃와 180℃의 온도에서 제조된 보드가 상대적으로 높은 강도를 나타내었다. 더욱이, 200℃에서 8분 동안 열압하여 제조한 보드의 경우 상태 휨강도에 거의 육박하는 가장 높은 습윤 휨강도를 보였다. 두께 팽창율 시험에서는 모든 보드에서 전반적으로 6% 미만의 낮은 값을 나타내어 높은 치수안정성을 가지는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • The finite element simulation model and the program to calculate the reverse moment have been developed to analyse the stress state and deformation of pipe bending using local induction heating with small bending radius in this study. The reverse moment that is to be applied on the bending arm to control the wall thinning ratio of the bending outside to within a particular value. Even though the demand of pipes with small bending radius is increasing in power plants and ship buildings, the welded elbows are still widely used. The bending process with or without a reverse moment acting on the bending arm has been simulated. The reverse moments calculated from the developed program are in good agreement with the finite element simulations and the experiments.

  • In the previous experimental study about extru-bending of angle product, the bending of extruded angle products with the '${\wedge}$' section and 'ㄱ' section can be abtained by the hot metal extru-bending machine with the two punches moving in the different velocity. The bending curvature can be controlled by the different velocity of billets through the two-hole container. This paper describes simulation of extru-bending process by the difference of punch velocities. The result of the forming simulation by $DEFORM^{TM}-3D$ shows that the bending phenomenon at the die exit during extrusion can be abtained by the two punches moving in the different velocity. And it is possible to design extrusion dies and to control the curvature of product through the simulation of extru-bending process by analysis
