  • The work roll surface temperature rises and falls repetitively during hot slab rolling because the work roll surface is cooled continuously by water. This study focused on Std. No. 7 to determine a cooling method which significantly reduces the tangential tensile stresses on the work roll surface of the hot slab mill at Hyundai Steel Co. in Korea. A series of finite element analyses were performed to compute the temperature distribution and the tensile stresses in the circumferential direction of the work roll. The virtual slab model was used to reduce the run time considerably by assigning a high temperature to the virtual slab. Except for the heat generated by plastic deformation, this is equivalent to the hot rolling condition that a high temperature slab (material) would experience when in contact with the work rolls. Results showed that when the virtual slab model was coupled with FE analysis, the run time was found to be reduced from 2000 hours to 70 hours. When the work roll surface cooled with a certain on-off patter of water spray, the magnitude of the tangential stresses on the work rolls were decreased by 54.1%, in comparison with those cooled by continuous water spraying. Savings of up to 83.3% in water usage are possible if the proposed water cooling method is adopted.

  • Return piping is used in a solar combi-system for heating and hot water supply. When the temperature of the lower side of a storage tank is low due to hot water usage, the returned hot water after heating is mixed with the lower side cold water of the tank, and the useful energy is reduced. We studied the degree of thermal stratification in the tank, using either a diffuser or a manifold to prevent mixing. Using the diffuser, mixing starts from the bottom of the storage tank. On the other hand, the manifold has the marked effect of preventing mixing. As a result of experiments with changing the diameter and number of holes in the manifold, the optimum condition is 8.5 mm diameter and 96 holes, under the condition of 0.3 lpm.

  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate the preferences of hot spring users regarding the utilization of Asan's hot springs after the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A survey was conducted on 340 hot spring users visiting hot spring resorts in the Onyang, Dogo, and Asan hot spring districts. The survey was conducted twice from November 5th to November 7th, 2021, and from May 25th to 26th, 2022. The survey included general questions, such as the frequency of hot spring usage, the purpose of visits, and the intention for future visits. Specific questions were related to Asan hot springs, focusing on the reasons for choosing Asan, its perceived advantages, and improvement suggestions. Results: The survey revealed that the average number of visits to hot springs was less than five in the past five years, and the main reason for visiting was to recover from fatigue. A percentage of respondents said they would use hot springs more often when the COVID-19 pandemic ends. When asked about their reasons for visiting Asan hot springs, responses varied by age. However, across all groups, the majority considered "good water" as an advantage of Asan hot springs, while improvements to "hot spring facilities" was the highest response among all age groups. Thus, despite the decline in the number of customers due to COVID-19, the overall perception of hot springs remains positive. This suggests a promising future for the hot spring industry, with the potential for a return to pre-pandemic usage levels. Conclusion: These results provide valuable foundational data for informing policy development aimed at revitalizing the hot spring industry in the post-COVID-19 era.

  • A PEMFC(proton exchange membrane fuel cell) is a good candidate for residential power generation to be cope with the shortage of fossil fuel and green house gas emission. The attractive benefit of the PEMFC is to produce electric power as well as hot water for home usage. Typically, thermal management of vehicular PEMFC is to reject the heat from the PEMFC to the ambient air. Different from that, the thermal management of PEMFC for RPG is to utilize the heat of PEMFC so that the PEMFC can be operated at its optimal efficiency. In this study, dynamic thermal management system is modeled to understand the response of the thermal management system during dynamic operation. The thermal management system of PEMFC for RPGFC is composed of two cooling circuits, one for controling the fuel cell temperature and the other for heating up the water for home usage. Dynamic responses and operating strategies of the PEMFC system are investigated during load changes.

  • Considering the significant waste of industrial energy, effective use of low temperature waste heat is extremely important. In this study, a heat pump cycle with double effect and double stage was realized, which escalates the hot water temperature from $50^{\circ}C$ to $70^{\circ}C$ using $160^{\circ}C$ high temperature heat source and $17^{\circ}C$ low temperature heat source. The steam generated in the first generator condenses in the first condenser generating steam in the second generator. The steam condenses in the second condenser and is provided to the second evaporator. Part of the water out of the second evaporator is supplied to the first evaporator, which evaporates using low temperature waste heat. The evaporated steam enters the first absorber and the second evaporator. The steam out of the second evaporator is absorbed into the solution at the second absorber. The hot water temperature is raised in the second condenser and in the second absorber. Proper flow rates and UA values, which satisfied temperature lift $20^{\circ}C$ and COP 1.6, were deduced through trior and error. The COP increases as the temperature of the high temperature water increases, hot water temperature decreases and flow rate increases, waste water temperature and flow rate increases, solution circulation rate decreases. On the other hand, the temperature rise of the hot water increases as the temperature of the high temperature water increases, hot water temperature increases and flow rate decreases, waste water temperature and flow rate increases, solution circulation rate increases. In addition, the COP and hot water temperature rise increase as UAs of the heat exchangers increase.
