  • Insect pests attacking the leaf of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were surveyed in environmentally frendly leaf-lettuce-greenhouses in Hwaseong, Namyangju, and Suwon from 2003 to 2004. Sixteen insect species of eleven families in eight orders were collected in greenhouses. Among them, Acyrthosiphon solani, Frankliniella occidentalis, and Autographa nigrisigna were the most serious pest species because of their damage ratio was over 30%. Population of Acyrthosiphon solani showed the highest peak one or two times between mid-April and early June in both the second and the third cropping period. Frankliniella occidentalis reached the highest peak one or two times, the first peak between mid-June and the late July, and the second peak between the mid-August and the mid-October.Autographa nigrisigna reached the highest peak one or times between early June and late July and in the mid-August to late October. The highest peak occurrence of A. solami was observed in early June as many as 4,836 nymphs and adults per 100 leaves. And for F. occidentalis it was in early July occurring 437 larvae and adults per 100 leaves, for A. nigrisigna in early October occurring 42 larvae per 100 leaves. The density of F. occidentalis and its damage as well was greater in soil culture than in hydroponic culture, but in case of both A. solani and A. nigrisigna no such difference between cropping systems was found.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the set up and running status of school gardening at elementary schools in Jeollabuk-do. Among 416 elementary schools in Jeollabuk-do, 164 schools (39.4%) had school gardens. Ninety-seven schools in cities and 67 in counties had school gardens. The total area and school garden size at schools in Jeollabuk-do were $45,490m^2$ and $277m^2$ per school, respectively, as well as $1.6m^2$ per students. School gardens varied in type, and percentages of outdoor and off-campus gardens were 67.2% and 17.2%, respectively. There were differences in the set up, type of garden, annual operating budget, and participants in school garden programs according to the location (city or county) of the school The installation and automation of facilities in the garden (such as greenhouse, tool shed, resource recycling facility, etc.) were poor. Most schools grew various kinds of plants, including vegetables, crops, ornamentals, and fruits. Teachers most often operated school gardens and taught students. Teachers had difficulty managing school gardens due to absence of knowledge about sustaining gardens. Most respondents reported the need for a school garden training program. Sixty-one percent of schools reported that the garden was used for academic instruction, especially during class. The majority of respondents agreed that school gardens have a positive effect and wanted to increase classes related to school gardens. Accordingly, in order to sustain school gardens and maximize their effects, systematic and customized support is needed that considers the characteristics and circumstances of the school. The facilities and features of the garden should be improved, and the school garden training program for teachers should attempt to reduce the effort required to manage the garden and increase utilization efficiency. In addition, participation of garden coordinators, parents, and community volunteers in managing gardens and implementing garden lessons is required.

  • Shading paint (water-soluble) is one of the temperature control agents inside of a greenhouse in summer. Plastic film rain shelter is a unique system in Korean, prevents disease development vineyards, but it causes the heat inside a shelter in summer. Shading paint treatment with different shading rates (15, 25, and 35%) outside of plastic rain shelter avoided excessive heat inside. Shading paint influenced sunlight under plastic rain shelter in a different manner at each treatment. 35% of shading paint treatment reduced 45% of PPFD (Photosynthesis Photon Flux Density) than non-treatment control. Shading paint had the significance of efficiency to reduce the temperature under plastic rain shelter. 35% of shading paint treatment reduced $2^{\circ}C$ of bunch temperature than non-treatment control. However, shading paint treatment had not to control lower than ambient temperature. 35% of shading paint treatment is available to prevent excessive heat damage and poor fruit quality under plastic film rain shelter in summer in Korean vineyards.

  • This study was performed to evaluate influences of tunnel covering materials and seeding dates on the growth and productivity of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic F.) cultured early in unheated greenhouse. During tunnel installation period, from March 5 to April 30 and from October 11 to November 10, air and soil temperature in tunnel covered with polyethylene film (PEF) had risen $2.0-2.4^{\circ}C$ and $0.9-1.0^{\circ}C$, respectively, compared to those in non-tunnel (NT). Air and soil temperature in tunnel with illite non-fabric (INF) also had risen $1.6-1.8^{\circ}C$ and $0.6-0.8^{\circ}C$, respectively. Especially, it showed greater effects of the rise at low temperature time zones of the day. In plots of seeding on March 15 in tunnel covered with PEF or INF, temperature during emergence period, emergence days and rate were similar to plot seeding on April 5 in NT. There were two more harvesting in plots of seeding on March 5 or March 15 in tunnel, and increasing of total yield by 22.5-25.7% compared to plot of seeding on April 5 in NT. But there was observed no significant differences between PEF and INF. Whereas PEF was necessary to be removed at midday sometimes because it had risk of high temperature injury, INF was not necessary. All above suggest that it was suitable to sow seed on the middle of March in tunnel covered with INF, for early culture of water spinach in unheated greenhouse.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of relative humidity (70, 80, 90, and 95%) and to examine the interrelationship of temperature (15, 20, and $25^{\circ}C$) and relative humidity (60, 70, 80, and 90%) in the greenhouse on growth and occurrence of white rust in chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. The developmental stages of white rust were monitored from the initial occurrence to sporidium formation in teliospores. When the relative humidity of greenhouse was adjusted to 90% or more for 40 days, the occurrence rate of white rust, the number of infected leaves, and the number of symptoms per leaf were more than 97%, 10, and 55, respectively. However, in the treatment with 70% relative humidity, the occurrence rate of white rust dropped to 30% and only two spots of symptoms were observed with only 1 or 2 infected leaves per plant. The growth of cut flowers, such as fresh weight and leaf number, was the highest in 70% relative humidity. In the 90% relative humidity treatment, the first symptom of white spot appeared at 6 days after planting in chrysanthemum infected with white rust (stage 1), and then after one day, teliospores came out through the epidermal tissue of leaf (stage 2). The telium was formed with increasing teliospores after 1 to 2 days (stage 3), and then the promycelia developed from teliospores (stage 4). After a lapse of 4 to 5 days, sporidia formed on promycelia (stage 5). Regardless of relative humidity, white rust did not occur at all in treatments at $25^{\circ}C$. In treatments at $20^{\circ}C$, the number of sporidia was high regardless of relative humidity, but white rust did not occur in 60% and 70% relative humidity. As the relative humidity was higher, the number of sporidia and occurrence rate of white rust greatly increased, but the occurrence rate of white rust decreased to less than 14% in 60% and 70% relative humidity in treatment at $15^{\circ}C$.

  • 'Kyoho' grape (Vitis labruscana L.) has currently cropped twice a year in plastic greenhouses. However, there are problems with low fruit quality in the second cropping owing to low temperatures and short photoperiods. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of root zone heating and $CO_2$ enrichment in plastic greenhouse on the vine growth and fruit quality of 'Kyoho' grape in double cropping system. The internode length of shoots, leaf area and leaf dry weight at the treatment of soil heating near root zone was significantly different regardless of $CO_2$ enrichment. There were no significant differences in fruit bunch and berry weight, titratable acidity, coloration degree and berry shattering among the treatments, but the soluble solids significantly increased by root zone heating. Photosynthetic rate increased with increasing $CO_2$ concentration from 300 to $800{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$ in sunny day, whereas it didn't increase in cloudy day regardless of $CO_2$ enrichment.

  • This study were conducted to investigate the influence of chilling on photosynthetic rate, root activity, contents of total sugars and fatty acids of cucumber seedlings grown in a greenhouse. Even though photosynthetic activity of seedlings exposed to $0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours was little or insignificantly influenced, it was reduced by 52.8% and 67.7% in seedlings exposed to the same temperature for an extended 10 and 24 hours, respectively. Photosynthetic rate decreased significantly when seedlings were illuminated, as compared to continuously held under darkness, during 15 hours of chilling treatment at 3$^{\circ}C$. Recovery of photosynthetic ability was also retarded by illumination during a recovery period after chilling treatment. Root activity, as measured by the oxidation power of $\alpha$-naphtylamine, was significantly reduced by chilling treatment at 0 to 6$^{\circ}C$, but amount of bleeding xylem sap collected at 40 days after chilling treatment was not significantly different among treatments. Total sugar content increased by 12 and 23% as compared to the control in seedlings chilled for 24 hours, respectively, at 3$^{\circ}C$. Contents of unsaturated linolenic and oleic acids increased, while content of saturated palmitic acid decreased with chilling treatment.

  • This experiment was carried out to compare growth and fruit setting characteristics in ten winter-planted paprika (Capsicim annuum L.) cultivars. Five red line paprika cultivars ('Maduro', 'Maranello', 'Nagano', 'Sirocco' and 'Special') and five yellow line paprika cultivars ('Coletti', 'Sven', 'Thialf', 'Volante' and 'Zagato') were used for this study. The experiment was performed for 42 weeks, from winter of 2013 to autumn of 2014. Based on the growth stages of paprika, growth characteristics were investigated six times, and each investigation was categorized from group 1 through group 6. The relative internode ratio showed a normal range at the early growth stage, but tended to gradually decline as growth progressed. This trend was greater in red line paprika than in yellow line paprika. Among the cultivars used for this experiment, 'Special' and 'Zagato' showed growth inhibition, whereas 'Maranello' and 'Volante' kept a balanced growth during summer cultivation. The fruit set percentage in yellow paprika was 10.8% higher than in red paprika, while the number of branches in yellow paprika was 4.1% less than in red paprika. When measured after the full fruiting age, from June to July, the number of fruit set in group 4 was much lower in 'Sirocco' and 'Coletti' than in any of the other cultivars, indicating that they were more sensitive to the growth environment during the rainy season. These findings suggest that 'Maranello', 'Nagano', 'Sven', 'Thialf', and 'Volante' could be effectively used for summer cultivation in a high-plastic-film greenhouse, and 'Maranello', 'Special', 'Volante', and 'Zagato' could be good candidates for a low-plastic-film greenhouse.

  • 'Yeomyeong', a new welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L.) variety, is developed by the Bioenergy Crop Research Center, NICS, RDA in 2004. This variety, as interspecific $F_1$ hybrid, is developed by a cross between onion (Allium. cepa L.) and welsh onion (A. fistulosum L). The first cross was conducted in 2003 between MOS8, onion male sterile line and G2, welsh onion inbred line. Horticultural and yield characteristics of this hybrid $F_1$ line was investigated in greenhouse for 2 years from 2004 to 2005 with fall cropping cultivation. It has a single pseudostem plant type, anthocyanin-colored pseudostem, and male sterile umbel. It showed intermediate plant type of the maternal parents in overall plant characteristics. 'Yeomyeong' is fall sawing variety and has higher plant height and pseudostem length than that of check variety 'Gumjang'. The yield potential of this variety was about 130.1MT/ha in greenhouse in spring harvseting season. This variety would be adaptable to the fall sowing cultivation in green house.
