  • The purposee of this study is to investigate the correlation between the horizontal and vertical discrepancy of facial bones and the horizontal and vertical position of glenoid fossa. For this study, the cephalograms were taken to the adults over 18 of age(96 men and 108women). The cephalograms were divided into three groups according to the ANB angle(below 0.5 degree, 0.5 to 4.0 degree and above 38 degree), and they were divided into three groups according to the SN-MP angle(below 30 degree, 30 to 38 degree and above 38 degree). The following conclusions were obtained : 1. In the horizontal discrepancy of facial bone(ANB), the horiontal position of glenoid fossa(X) was anterior position as the order of Class II, Class I, Cias III. 2. The horizontal position of glenoid fossa(X) showed the significant correlation with ANB and SNB, but not with SNA. 3. In the vertical discrepancy of facial bone(SN-MP), thee less anglee was the greater vertical position of glenoid fossa (X) and was followed by the medium and high angle in order. 4. The vertical position of glenoid fossa(Y) showed thhat the SN-FH was the most significant correlation, and it was followed as the order of SN-FH, SN-MP and SN-OP angle. 5. There was the samllest length of anterior cranial base in the Class III malocclusion.

  • In this study, the stability of trench slope was analysed in summer and winter seasons for the construction of pipelines in permafrost regions. The construction standards of Korea, Russia and UK were compared for obtaining an optimum trench shape for a pipeline of 30 in. diameter. Using the geotechnical properties of soil in Yakutsk (Russia), the stability of trench slope was analysed using Strength Reduction Method (SRM) according to the horizontal slope angle values of $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$ and vertical slope angle values of $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. In both seasons, an increase in the slope angle results in a decrease in the factor of safety. The results show that horizontal slope angle of $30^{\circ}$ was not safe in summer season. At the vertical slope angle of $20^{\circ}$, trench side failure was observed, whereas, ground slope failure was observed at the vertical slope angles of $30^{\circ}$ and $40^{\circ}$. Due to the solidification of pore water at temperatures below $0^{\circ}C$, cementation of soil particles take place. Therefore, the trench slope was found to be stable in the winter season at all vertical and horizontal slop angles, except for special load cases and abrupt temperature changes.

  • Effects of tube inclination on pool boiling heat transfer have been studied for the saturated water at atmospheric pressure. For the analysis, seven inclination angles varying from the horizontal to the vertical and two tube diameters(25.4 and 30.0 mm) are tested. According to the results, inclination angles result in much change on heat transfer. For the same wall superheat(about $5.3^{\circ}C$) the ratio between two heat fluxes for the $45^{\circ}$ inclined and the vertical has the value of more than five when the tube diameter is 25.4mm. As the inclination angle is increasing from the horizontal to the vertical direction heat transfer is gradually increasing because of the increase in liquid agitation. However the detailed tendency depends on the ratio between the tube length and the diameter.

  • The recent rapid development of HCI and surveillance technologies has brought great interests in application systems to process faces. Much of research efforts in these systems has been primarily focused on such areas as face recognition, facial expression analysis and facial feature extraction. However, not many approaches have been reported toward face direction detection. This paper proposes a method to detect the direction of a face using a facial feature called facial triangle, which is formed by two eyebrows and the lower lip. Specifically, based on the single monocular view of the face, the proposed method introduces very simple formulas to estimate the horizontal or vertical rotation angle of the face. The horizontal rotation angle can be calculated by using a ratio between the areas of left and right facial triangles, while the vertical angle can be obtained from a ratio between the base and height of facial triangle. Experimental results showed that our method makes it possible to obtain the horizontal angle within an error tolerance of ${\pm}1.68^{\circ}$, and that it performs better as the magnitude of the vertical rotation angle increases.

  • How to extimate the angle of attack of a vertical V-type cambered otter board was described. A three-dimensional semi-analytic treatment of a towing cable system was applied to the field experiments of a midwater trawl obtained by the Scanmar system. Also the equilibrium condition of the horizontal component and vertical component of forces and moment around the otter board was used. When the warp length was 300m long and the towing speed was between 2.61 and 3.86 knots, the estimated angle of attack of the otter board was ranged between $24.7^{\circ}$ and $26.2^{\circ}$, though the maximum lift force was at the angle of attack $22^{\circ}$.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinematics variables of during forehand stroke by stance patterns. Eight high school tennis players were chosen for the study, who have never been injured for last six months, in Busan. They performed horizontal swing and vertical swing that it was done each five consecutive trial in the condition of square, open and semi-open stance. It was filmed by 6 video camera and used with 3-dimensional motion analyzer system. The following kinematic variables were analyzed in relation to angle of segment( shoulder, hip and knee joint). The conclusion were as follow: 1. The angle of hip joint represented at impact that horizontal swing was not significant difference by stance patterns but vertical swing was increased in open stance than square and semi-open stance. 2. The angle of both knee was not significant difference between all stance types and swing patterns. 3. The angle of shoulder, hip and knee joint rotation showed that open stance was increased than square and semi-open stance in all swing types and event.

  • This study was performed to evaluate soft tissue cephalometric norms for Korean adults which can be implemented in surgical orthodontic treatment planning using selected horizontal reference plane especially for Koreans (Male: $SN-7.5^{\circ}$, Female: $SN-9.0^{\circ}$) and a simplified analytical method. 70 males and 70 females consisting of freshmen of Yonsei University from 1996 to 1997 and students from the Dental College of Yonsei University were chosen according to clinical examination and cephalometric analysis. The samples had normal profiles, normal anteroposterior skeletal relationship(ANB angle of $0^{\circ}\;to\;4^{\circ}$ and Wits appraisal of -4.0mm to 0mm), and Class I molar and canine relationship. They had no missing or supernumerary teeth and had no experience of orthodontic or prosthetic treatment. After the selection of 15 soft tissue landmarks and the construction of horizontal and vertical reference lines, 25 measurements were taken. These consisted of vertical and horizontal linear measurements and angular measurements. The results were as follows. 1. Mean and standard deviation of the measurements were calculated in males and females. 2. Vertical measurements were comparably bigger in males than females whereas anterior facial height ratio(sN-Sn/Sn-sMe) and lower anterior facial height ratio(Sn-Stms/Stmi-sMe) showed no significant difference between sexes. 3. Most of the horizontal measurements in relation to the vertical reference line(G-perpendicular) showed no significant difference between sexes. 4. Nasofacial angle, columellar angle, nasolabial angle and facial contour angle showed no significant difference between sexes. 5. The upper and lower lip were positioned about $-1.0{\pm}2.0mm$ and $+1.0{\pm}2.0mm$ in relation to the Ricketts' esthetic line in both sexes. In this study, soft tissue cephalometric norms of Korean adults for orthognathic surgery were obtained.

  • In this paper, a new method for controlling the pointing device using EOG(electrooculogram) signal generated from eye movement was suggested. The basic idea of the method is to control the direction of pointer, as using the results of measuring each component of the horizontal EOG and the vertical EOG by angle of eye-gaze. As a practical example, pointing device controlling the personal computer's pointer is manufactured. The designed pointing device consists of pre-amplifier, A/D converter, serial transmission device and PC program. That is, first, the EOG is amplified by pre-amplifier. Secondly, the amplified EOG is digitized and transmitted to personal computer by PIC16C74A. Finally, the software for controlling the pointer on personal computer is programed. As the result, the measured horizontal EOG and vertical EOG by eye-gaze angle had high linearity; the correlation coefficients of the regression line were 0.998 and 0.996 respectively. And the developed pointing device is able to control the personal computer's pointer, and the average of the errors between the objective value and the observed value had 3.77% for horizontal axis and 5.85% for vertical axis. The pointing device developed in this study is able to control personal computer's pointer by subject's eye movement, that is, the user's intention. Furthermore, the algorithm of this study is applicable for many field, such as a new method remote control, a new wheelchair control and so forth.

  • This study investigates the kinetic characteristics of the Driggs motion in horse vaulting by stages through the three-dimensional video analysis of YTY and TABARA who won a high score and a low score respectively from the Driggs motion in horse vaulting during the Daegu Universiade 2003, which involves putting one's hands on the horse vaulting rotating sideways, stretching and rotating backward in the air, and twisting 900 degrees, so as to help develop the techniques of Korean gymnastic athletes. From the analyses of the duration of body center, horizontality, vertical position and horizontality, vertical speed and angle factors for each of four phases from the contact of the board to the takeoff from the horse vaulting. I arrived at the following conclusions: 1. It was found that the motion of bending oneself forward while rapidly stretching the knee joint when taking off from the board increases the horizontal speed of body center and shortens the time of the first jump. 2. It was found that S1 who won a high score shortened the time of the contact and takeoff from the horse vaulting and enlarged the shoulder joint angle for full blocking motion. It was also found that horizontal speed decreased while vertical speed increased when you rapidly stretch the right elbow joint while taking off from the horse vaulting. 3. It was found that horizontal distance was shortened to increase the height and time of staying in the air during the second jump.
