Cold expansion of fastener holes is a mechanical process widely used in the aerospace industry. This treatment leads to an improvement of fatigue behavior due to the developed compressive residual stresses on the hole surface. The residual stress profile depends on the parameters of cold expansion, which are, expanding rate, inserting direction of mandrel, material properties etc. and the method to confirm this profile is only measurement by X-ray diffractometer. Despite its importance to aerospace industries, little attention has been devoted to the accurate modelling of the process. In this paper, Two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element simulations have been conducted for the cold expansion in an aluminium plate in order to predict the magnitude and distribution of the residual stress and plastic deformation. Maximum compressive residual stress could be increase about 7 percent using the 2-step cold expansion method.
In order to analyze the stretch flange forming characteristics of tailored blanks. laser welded blanks of different thickness and strength combinations were prepared and hole expansion tests were done. The stretch flange formability of laser welded blanks was reduced as increasing the deformation restraining force($strength{\times}thickness$) ratio between two welded sheets. Simulation of stretch forming mode deformation and comparson with experimental results showed that the stretch flange formabili-ty was influenced not only by the difference of the deformation restraining forces between two base sheets but also by the difference of the deformation restraining forces between base sheet and weld. Therefore the stretch flange formability was reduced more rapidly than tensile elongation as increas-ing the deformation restraining force ration. It was also found that simulation of stretch flange forming was more accurate when material properties of weld was given.
Invar is a compound metal of Fe-Ni system and contain 36% Ni. The most distinction characteristic of Invar is the coefficient of thermal expansion is 1.0 10$^{-6}$ /$^{\circ}C$. That is a tenth of general steel material. This low thermal expansion characteristic of Invar is applied to the missile, aircraft, monitor CRT and frontier display's shadow mask such as FED and OLED. The usage of the Invar shadow mask for display is increasing due to the requirement of larger size and flatness monitor. The Invar shadow mask is machined by two ways electro-forming and laser now. However the electro-forming takes a too long time and the laser machining is accompanied with Burr. In this study, PEMM(pulse electrochemical micro machining) is conducted to machine the micro hole to the Invar and 80${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ hole was machined.
As one way of weight saving of the vehicle, 1-piece typed lower control arm has been developed using high strength hot rolled steel sheet. In order to overcome the edge splitting problem during edge flanging or burring process, HER (hole expansion ratio) value of steel sheet was primarily considered. The strength grade of steel sheet and the shape were optimized utilizing Taguchi method.
This paper describes the machining characteristics of the sintered carbide and die steel(STD-11) by electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. Electrical discharge machining(EDM) removes material from the workpiece by a series of electrical sparks that cause localized temperatures high enough to melt or vapourize the vicinity of the charge. In the experiment. four types of electrode which have different diameter are used with the application of continuous direct current and axial electrode feed. The controlled factors include the dimension of the electrode. In drilling by EDM, the dielectric flushed down the interior of the rotating tube electrode, in order to order to facilitate the removal of machining debris the hole. The expansion increase with increasing the thickness of material and the diameter of electrode and the expansion of sintered carbide is 1.75 times large then that of die steel. The taper of machined hole decrease with increasing the thickness of material. The crater sixe of die steel is larger then thet of sintered carbide and the surface roughness of sintered carbide is 1.58 tims larger then that of die steel.
Graphene is known to possess excellent thermal properties, including high thermal conductivity, that make it a prime candidate material for heat management in ultra large scale integrated circuits. For device applications, the key parameters are the thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal conductivity. There has been no reliable experimental determination on the thermal expansion coefficient of graphene whereas the estimates of the thermal conductivity vary widely. In this work, we estimate the thermal expansion coefficient of graphene on silicon dioxide by measuring the temperature dependence of the Raman spectrum. The shift of the Raman peaks due to heating or cooling results from both the intrinsic temperature dependence of the Raman spectrum of graphene and the strain on the graphene film due to the thermal expansion mismatch with silicon dioxide. By carefully comparing the experimental data against theoretical calculations, it is possible to determine the thermal expansion coefficient. The thermal conductivity is measured by estimating the thermal profile of a graphene film suspended over a circular hole of the substrate.
This study is an ergonomic study on the function of sleeves related with the expansion and contraction of the upper Extremity skin surface by various movememts. RESULTS : 1. According to the plane figure, a. The change of form is like fig. 3. b. In the changing rates of the expansion and contraction of skin surface by various movements, that of arm hole girth shows an extremely big discrepancy and that of Elbow Girth shows a relative low one. c. According to the rate of the expansion and contraction of each block, the inside of the upper arm area expands most in all the blocks measured. 2. According to the rate of expansion and contraction of skin surface by somatometry, inside lehgth of arm in M\sub 2\ and outside length of the upper arm in M\sub 4\ expand significantly8and also elbow girth in M\sub 6\, M\sub 7\, M\sub 8\ expands significantly.
In this study, the effect of tempering on the stretch-flangeability is investigated in 980 MPa grade dual-phase steel consisting of ferrite and martensite phases. During tempering at 300 ℃, the strength of ferrite increases due to the pinning of dislocations by carbon atoms released from martensite, while martensite is softened as a consequence of a reduction in its carbon super-saturation. This strength variation results in a considerable increase in yield strength of the steel, without loss of tensile strength. The hole expansion test shows that steel tempered for 20 min (T20 steel) exhibits a higher hole expansion ratio than that of steel without tempering (T0 steel). In T0 steel, severe plastic localization in ferrite causes easy pore formation at the ferrite-martensite interface and subsequent brittle crack propagation through the highly deformed ferrite area during hole expansion testing; this propagation is mainly attributed to the large difference in hardness between ferrite and martensite. When the difference in hardness is not so large (T20 steel), on the other hand, tempered martensite can be considerably deformed together with ferrite, thereby delaying pore formation and hindering crack propagation by crack blunting. Eventually, these different deformation and fracture behaviors contribute to the superior stretch-flangeability of T20 steel.
Pile-to-pilecap connection performance is important as Integral abutment bridges (IABs) have no expansion joints and their flexible weak-axis oriented supporting piles take the role of the expansion joint. This connection may govern the bridge strength and the performance against various lateral loads. The intention of this study is to identify crack propagation patterns when the pile-to-pilecap connection is subjected to lateral loadings and to propose novel connections for improved performance under lateral loadings. In this study, eight different types of connections were developed and modeled, using Abaqus 6.12 to evaluate performances. Three types were developed by strengthening the connections using rebar or steel tube: (i) PennDOT specification; (ii) Spiral rebar; and (iii) HSS tube. Other types were developed by softening the connections using shape modifications: (i) cylindrical hole; (ii) reduced flange; (iii) removed flange; (iv) extended hole; and (v) slot hole connection types. The connections using the PennDOT specification, HSS tube, and cylindrical hole were shown to be ineffective in the prevention of cracks, resulting in lower structural capacities under the lateral load compared to other types. The other developed connections successfully delayed or arrested the concrete crack initiations and propagations. Among the successful connection types, the spiral rebar connection allowed a relatively larger reaction force, which can damage the superstructure of the IABs. Other softened connections performed better in terms of minimized reaction forces and crack prevention.
In the automotive industry, the hole expanding test is widely used to assess the formability of punched holes in sheets. This test provides a good representation of formability within the framework defined by the ISO 16630 standard. During hole expanding tests on galvanized high strength steels, a negative effect was observed when there was a delay between hole punching and expansion, as compared to performing both operations directly. This effect is believed to be caused by hydrogen aging, which occurs when hydrogen diffuses towards highly-work hardened edges. Therefore, the aim of this study is to demonstrate the migration of hydrogen towards work-hardened edges in high strength Zn-coated steel sheets using a novel Thermal Desorption Analyzer (TDA) designed for small samples. This newly-developed TDA setup allows for the quantification of local diffusible hydrogen near cut edges. With its induction heating and ability to analyze Zn-coated samples while reducing artifacts, this setup offers flexible heat cycles. Through this method, a hydrogen gradient is observed over short distances in shear-cut galvanized steel sheets after a certain period of time following punching.
