Double symmetric patch repair of existing structures always causes membrane action only, however, in many cases this technique is not practical. On the other hand, the bending stiffness of the patch and the skin increases as tensile loading is increased and affects the bending deformation significantly in the case of single-sided patch repair. In this study, the p-convergent full layerwise model has been proposed to determine the stress concentration factor in the vicinity of a circular hole as well as across the thickness of plates with single-sided patch repair. In assumed displacement field, the strain-displacement relations and 3-D constitutive equations of a layer are obtained by the combination of 2-D and 3-D hierarchical shape functions. The transfinite mapping technique has been used to represent a circular boundary and Gauss-Lobatto numerical integration is implemented in order to directly obtain stresses occurred at the nodal points of each layer without other extrapolation techniques. The accuracy and simplicity of the present model are verified with comparison of the previous results in literatures using experiment and conventional 3-D finite element. Also, the bending effect has been investigated with various patch types like square, circular and annular shape.

This study has attempted to suggest a proper reinforcement method by strengthening unbonded post -tensioning through height of an anchorage hole, form of a saddle, and loading time point as parameters and evaluating the reinforcement method through a bending experiment. The result of this experiment indicated effects of reinforcement since the maximum strength ratio(the ratio of an experimental value to theoretical value) of SC composite beams before prestressed was 0.97 and after prestress were 1.00~1.21. As a result of analysis on displacement and strain, irrespective of height of an anchorage hole and loading time point, the D120-series specimen where an anchorage hole was installed on the neutral axis after reinforcement showed that its deflection continuously increased without sudden load reduction after maximum load and it stably behaved with relatively low strain of each part. In terms of reinforcement effects, the maximum strength of SCR-UD120 specimen prestressed after pre-loading was increased 1.72 times comparing to SC composite beams so SCR-UD120 specimen prestressed after pre-loading was shown to be the best.

Based on the application of te theory of conjugate approximations and the Loubignac's iterative method in a local region, a method to improve the stress filed in a displacement-formulated finite element solution has been proposed. The validity of the proposed method has been tested through two examples : a thick cylinder under internal pressure loading and an infinite plate with a central circular hole subjected to uniaxial tension. As a result of analysis of the examples, it was found that the stress field obtained for the local region model by the proposed method approximates well for the whole domain model. In addition, it was found that because of a significant decrease in the computing time to obtain the improved stress field, the proposed method is efficient and useful for the detailed stress analysis in local regions.

A simple outline for teaching adaptive scheme based finite element method for planar problems as a part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering curriculum is presented. Displacement based finite element formulation for planar problems and representative strain value based adaptive scheme for mesh generation are considered. As examples, a cantilever beam with a concentrated load treated as a planar problem and stretching of a plate with a circular hole are analyzed with displacement based finite element method with adaptive meshes. The examples and outlines show how adaptive based finite element method may become an essential part of computer aided teaching of structural engineering.

This paper presents the performance and problems in analysis method and testing system of Electronic Speckle Pattern Interfermetry(ESPI) method, in measuring two-dimensional in- plane displacement. The analysis result of measurement by ESPI is quite comparable to that of measurement by strain gauge method. This implieds that the method of ESPI is a very effective tool in non-contact two-dimensional in-plane strain analysis. But there is a controversial point, measurement error. This error is discussed to be affected not by ESPI method itself, but by its analysis scheme of the interference fringe, where the first-order interpolation has been applied to the points of strain measured. Further development of advanced first-order interpolation method is being undertaken for the more precise in-plane strain measurement.

In this study, the equivalent pressure acting on the face of drilled hole was determined by back analysis. This analysis was continued until the difference between the displacement directly measured during field test construction of CGS and the displacement evaluated by numerical analysis was below 10 percent, and the affect of diaphragm wall adjacent to grout bulb was evaluated by numerical analysis using the equivalent pressure. From the analysis results, it was observed that the increase of the pressure acting on the diaphragm wall was greater at reclaimed sandfill layer than silty clay layer during the installation of CGS. Two methods were adopted to reduce the pressure acting on the diaphragm wall. One is installing of trench between diaphragm wall and grout bulb, the other is pre-installing of CGS before construction of diaphragm wall. From the numerical analysis results, above two methods can be considered as an effective method to reduce the pressure. It was analyzed that the amount of reduction of the pressure and the displacement are 689.8% and 564.6%, respectively, in the case of adopting the trench method, and 463.7% and 214.0%, respectively, in the case of adopting pre-installing of 3 columns CGS.

The bottom structure of an instrumented capsule is a part which is joined at the receptacle of the flow tube in the reactor in-core. A geometrical change of the bottom structure has an effect on the pressure drop and the vibration of the capsule. The out-pile test to evaluate the structural integrity of the material capsule called 04M-17U was performed by using a single channel and a half core test loop. From the pressure drop test, the optimized diameter of the cone shape's bottom structure which satisfies HANARO's flow requirement (19.6 kg/s) is 71 mm. The maximum displacement of the capsule measured at the half core test loop is lower than 1.0 mm. From the analysis results, it is found that the test hole will not be interfered with near the flow tubes because its displacement due to the cooling water is very small at 0.072 mm. The fundamental frequency of the capsule under water is 9.64 Hz. It is expected that the resonance between the capsule and the fluid flow due to the cooling water in HANARO's in-core will not occur. Also, the new bottom structure of a solid cone shape with 71 mm in diameter will be applicable to the material and special capsules in the future.

Three diesel engines were fueled with BDF 20, a blend of 80% diesel fuel and 20% biodiesel fuel by volume, and run in excess of 200 h to evaluate their combustion characteristics and durability. The engines used for this study were a 4-cylinder 2476-cc displacement IDI diesel engine(Engine 1), a 4-cylinder l732-cc displacement IDI diesel engine(Engine 2), and a single cylinder 673-cc displacement DI diesel engine(Engine 3). Engine dynamometer testing was performed on each engine at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor the performance and exhaust emissions, which were sampled at 1h intervals for analysis, The peak combustion pressure with BDF 20 increased in Engines 1 and 3 over that measured when burning pure diesel fuel, but that in Engine 2 remained constant. Combustion parameters, such as the maximum combustion pressure and corresponding crank angle, did not change over the long-term dynamometer testing. The BSFC with BDF 20 in Engine 1 was less than that measured with pure diesel fuel. The amount of smoke produced with BDF 20 was less for all engines ; the greatest reduction was observed for Engine 3. The NOx emissions were lower in the IDI engines than the DI engine. The traditional trade-off between smoke and NOx emissions was maintained for BDF 20 fuel for Engines 1 and 3. There was not a big difference in the $CO_2\;and\;O_2$ emissions for BDF 20, as compared to pure diesel fuel, but more $CO_2$ was exhausted by Engine 1 than by Engines 2 or 3 and less $O_2$ was exhausted by Engine 1 than by Engines 2 or 3. The engine parts remained clean, except for some carbon attached to the area surrounding the nozzle hole of the DI diesel engine.
In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PGSN (Pressurized Grouting Soil Nailing) system is proposed. Effects of various factors related to the design of the pressurized grouting soil nailing system, such as the length of re-bars and type of reinforcement materials, were examined throughout a series of the displacement-controlled field pull-out tests. 9 displacement-controlled field pull-out tests were performed and the ratio of injected grout volume to grout hole volume were also evaluated based on the measurements. In addition, short-term characteristics of pull-out deformations of the newly proposed PGSN system were analyzed and compared with those of the ordinary soil nailing system by carrying out field pull-out tests. The test results were shown that the displacements of pressurized grouting soil nailing system were decreased 30~36% in comparison with using gravity grouting soil nailing system by the pressurized effect. The displacements of steel tube were diminished 31~32% comparison with using deformed bar by the reinforcement type change from the field pull-out tests.
