  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the tendency of the research on the traditional scenery architecture based on the old literature for the last 10 years and to suggest direction of the research on the traditional scenery through utilization of the old literature. For the tendency analysis of the research on the traditional scenery, I investigated and analyzed researches published in the Journal of the Korean Institute of Traditional Landscape Architecture between 2002 and 2012, and reviewed the utilization of the old literature about research on the traditional scenery. The number of the research papers through the old literature was two or three a year by 2009, but has increased to more than eight from 2010. The utilization tendency of the old literature was mostly to use the Korean translations or to use a collection of an individual's works after partially translating. As some of the researches were carried out only through translations even when they used the original, historical evidence on the translation of the original was insufficient. I can suggest the direction of the research on the traditional scenery by the results as follows: it is necessary to present both translation and the original and to specify the source of translation, for the efficient understanding and verification of the original. Professional translation of landscape architecture and scenery also seems to be necessary for the records of the current state. For the analysis of the old literature, as the analysis of the traditional scenery both through poetry and records facilitates assumption of the location of landscape by the abundant data, it seems to be necessary to approach research, using poetry and prose complementarily, after preparing foundation of research based on the records.

  • This paper is to examine the bibliographical description of the revolutionary historical archives and the standardization of the archives management in China. The standardization in the field of records and archives management was not initiated on its own way but as a part of national - leveled standardization. As a first step National Committee on Technical Standardization of Literature was established, followed by the establishing of Committee on Technical Standardization of Micro - filming and Committee of Technical Standardization of Paper Form. The standardization of the records and archives management was carried out in the context of functions of these three committees. In 1983 the standardization in the sphere of records and archives management speeded up, when the National Archives Administration formed small organizations which led the standardization work all over the country. A committee of standardization originated from small organizations and it brought a great progress of the standardization. If some opinions on standardization were submitted from records offices or related offices, they were examined by the committee of standardization. The opinions that were submitted by the committee of standardization were examined by the National Archives Administration which proclaimed it officially. The Chinese government commenced to establish the bibliographical data centre for historical archives and materials on the basis of this process of standardization. In the case of the revolutionary historical archives the description was made on the level of sources(provenance), which was sent to the bibliographical data centre for historical archives and materials. The Chinese government set digitalizing as a goal in records and archives management in the middle of 1990's. It was regulated that the description of records item that should be transferred to the center must be digitalized. However, the description of the file level was not made separately being reflected in the process of description of item level. (The second part of the paper will be released in the next volume).

  • This study is performed to find out the eruptive events of the historical period recorded in literature, which have been recognized and regarded as ones from Mt. Baekdusan, and to make volcanological interpretations of the eruptive events. Since the Millennium eruption, more than 31 eruptive events have been discovered, most of which are Plinian eruptions with volcanic ash that dispersed into the regions in the vicinity of the volcano. The 1903 record includes the event of the phreatomagmatic or vulcanian eruption that occurred within the Cheonji caldera lake. Based on the eruption records of the historical period and the 2002 precursor unrest to volcanic eruptions, Mt. Baekdusan has been evaluated and regarded as an active volcano that has the potential to erupt in the future.

  • Astronomical data making such as forming a calendar, period of day, determining the time of rising/setting of the sun and the onset of twilight are essential in our daily lives. Knowing the calendar day of the past is particularly crucial for studying the history of a clan or a nation. To verify previous studies in the calendar day of the Joseon dynasty (1392 - 1910), we investigate the sexagenary cycle of the new moon day (i.e., the first day in a lunar month) by using sources such as results of the calculations using the Datong calendar (a Chinese Calendar of the Ming Dynasty) and the data of Baekjungryeok (a Perpetual Calendar; literally, a one hundred-year almanac). Compared with the study of Ahn et al., we find that as many as 17 sexagenary cycles show discrepancies. In the cases of nine discrepancies, we find that the sexagenary cycles of this study are identical to those of the almanacs at that time. In addition, we study five sexagenary cycles by using the historical accounts of Joseon Wangjo Sillok (Annals of the Joseon Dynasty), Seungjeongwon Ilgi (Daily Reports of Royal Secretariat), Chungung Ilgi (Logs of Crown Prince), and so forth. For the remaining discrepancies, we present historical literature supporting the results of this study. This study will greatly contribute to the identification of the lunisolar calendar days during the Joseon dynasty as the dates of the modern (i.e., Gregorian) calendar.

  • This is a literature study about the concept of 'Division into Equal Parts' in middle school geometry. First, we notice that the concept of the division into equal parts in middle school geometry is given in four themes, which are those of line segments, angles, arches and areas. Second, we investigate and analyse the historical backgrounds of these four kinds of divisions into equal parts. Third, the possibility of extension in terms of method and concept was researched. Through the result of this study, we suggest that it is desirable to use effective utility of history in mathematical teaching and learning in middle school.

  • The socioeconomic inequalities in health have recently become an important public health concern in South Korea, and the issue has gained increasing attention from many South Korean researchers due to the increasing income inequality and Widening social polarization following its economic crisis in the late 1990s. However, despite the mounting literature on health inequalities published in recent years, the history of research on health inequality in South Korea is premature in comparison to the long histories in several Western countries. Understanding the historical background underlying the issue of health inequality research may aid in establishing and accumulating scientifically solid evidence in South Korea. It may also direct the South Korean research community to develop research agendas that are. more politically and academically appropriate for South Korean society. This paper describes the historical development of health inequality research in the West and introduces several important issues contributing to the advancement of health inequality research. Specifically, the major studies conducted before and after the UK Black Report are presented. In addition, the history and current status of health inequality research in South Korea are documented and evaluated. Finally, several research agendas for the quantitative and qualitative improvement of health inequality research in South Korea are proposed.

  • This study is aimed to define and classify GREEN TOURISM (GT) resources as the basis for rural sustainable development, and to analyze the current conditions of GT and applicable resources in Korea. For these purposes, a field survey about 24 rural villages in Japan and Korea is applied, accompanied by a questionnaire survey of 30 specialists, as well as a literature review. The results of this study are summarized as follows. The concept of GT has 3 important points: interchange between rural and urban residents, staying in villages, and residents' participation. GT resource are divided into 4 types: Agricultural, Ecological, Historical and Living resources in a space and activity program. In addition, the GT resources in Japan are more quantitatively abundant than in Korea, but Korean agricultural and ecological resources were more abundant relatively. According to the several methods above, 18 space and 14 activity programs were classified. Lastly, this study analyzed the applicable 32 Korean resources using the specialists' questionnaire survey. Among the space resources, ecological landscape, farm produce, farm-land, water, and historical landscape have higher applicability, but the applicability of sports, event, commemoration, and divine space are lower. Among the activity programs, farm produce, animal, plant, food&beverage, and living appliance have higher applicability.

  • As the importance of economic value of culture has increased, governments have set a strategy to secure national competitiveness through cultural art. One of concrete ways is establishing a cultural space by using idle facilities. This study aims to analyze publicness of Seoul Art Space, suggest ways to improve the facilities of creative space and provide basic date for the further plan of creative space. The object of this study is 8 facilities from Seoul Art Space which is operated by City of Seoul. Through literature review, we extracted 5 elements(each element has 4 sub categories) for publicness(accessibility, openness, convenience, historical connectivity and stay time) and to evaluates publicness of the Seoul Art Space, we analyzed these facilities based on these elements. The results are as follows: The publicness of Seoul Art Space acquired 96.9%(100% is 64 points) for stay time, 95.3% for convenience, 90.6% for accessibility, 73.4% for openness and 62.5% for historical connectivity. For the openness, we suggest to use glass materials and open the space to the public. To improve historical connectivity, we suggest to determine appropriate theme for a particular space or area and set a function of buildings for the differentiation.

  • There has been a project in Japan recently to develop the mixed-use facility in order to help regenerate its city's vitality. They must make efficient use of resources that contains historical and local identity. In contrast, Korea hasn't considered developing their mixed-use facilities for maintaining their historical identity. This research will analyze how locality is reflected in the 8 mixed-use facilities in Japan. The research method was as follows: Preparatory study and literature research were conducted to extract the elements of locality shown in the mixed-use facilities in Japan. According to the results, the peculiarities of locality are as follows: 1) It's important to make the most of the local Identity by reflecting on the historical peculiarity of the region. 2) Nature and its environmental surroundings should be considered when constructing buildings in order to revitalize its local identity. 3) In the perception aspect, when a mixed-use facility is open for visit, the negative elements such as the 'peripheral regional gap' that may be felt by the visitor must be kept to the minimum.
