MINIMUM BATTERY ENERGY IN THE SURVIVAL MODE FOR THE COMS SPACECRAFT

  • The MRE (Monitoring Reconfiguration Electronics) board included inside the SCU (Spacecraft Computer Unit) in the COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) spacecraft is used to monitor the battery voltage and to detect a battery under voltage (low battery capacity) or a battery overvoltage (overcharge). In case of alarm detection, a reconfiguration is initiated by the MRE board. The MRE configures the overall spacecraft in the survival mode to protect the Li-Ion (lithium ion) battery from overcharge and over discharge. For the EPS (Electrical Power Subsystem) point of view, the survival mode can be trigged from hardware wired thresholds. The aim of this paper to provide and to justify the low and high threshold levels which are associated to the MRE battery voltage monitoring. The MRE trig guarantees minimum battery energy to available for the required 48 hours autonomy duration of the spacecraft after MRE trig in the survival mode.

The Research and Development Trend of Cathode Materials in Lithium Ion Battery (리튬이차전지용 양극재 개발 동향)

  • The cathode materials for lithium ion battery have been developed in accordance with the battery performance. $LiCoO_2$ initially adapted at lithium ion battery is going to be useful even at the charging voltage of 4.3 V by surface treatment or doping which drastically improved the performance of $LiCoO_2$. On the other hand, the complicate and multiple functions of recent electronic equipments required higher operational voltage and higher capacity than ever, which is going to be driving force for developing new cathode materials. Some of them are $LiNi_{1-x}{M_xO_2}$, $Li[Ni_{x}Mn_{y}Co_{z}]O_{2}$, $Li[{Ni}_{1/2}{Mn}_{1/2}]O_{2}$. Other new type of cathode materials having high safety is also developed to apply for HEV (hybrid electrical vehicle) and power tool applications. ${LiMn}_{2}{O}_{4}$ and $LiFePO_4$ are famous for highly stable material, which are expected to give contribution to make safer battery. In near future, the various materials having both capacity and safety will be developed by new technology, such as solid solution composite.

  • Lithium is a highly attractive material for high-energy-concentration batteries, since it has low weight and high potential. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which have the extremely high gravimetric and volumetric energy densities, are currently the most preferable power sources for future electric vehicles and various portable electronic devices. In order to improve the efficiency and lifetime, new electrode compounds for lithium intercalation or insertion have been investigated for rechargeable batteries. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a very useful tool to investigate the structural changes in electrode materials in actual working lithium-ion batteries. To detect the in-situ microstructural changes of electrode and electrolyte materials, $^7Li-^{19}F$ double-resonance solid-state NMR probe with a static solenoidal coil for a 600-MHz narrow-bore magnet was designed, constructed, and tested successfully.

Growth Mechanism of SnO Nanostructures and Applications as an Anode of Lithium-ion Battery

  • Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries have been considered the most attractive power sources for mobile electronic devices. Although graphite is widely used as the anode material for commercial lithium-ion batteries, it cannot fulfill the requirement for higher storage capacity because of its insufficient theoretical capacity of 372 mAh/g. For the sake of replacing graphite, Sn-based materials have been extensively investigated as anode materials because they can have much higher theoretical capacities (994 mAh/g for Sn, 875 mAh/g for SnO, 783 mAh/g for $SnO_2$). However, these materials generate huge volume expansion and shrinkage during $Li^+$ intercalation and de-intercalation and result in the pulverization and cracking of the contact between anode materials and current collector. Therefore, there have been significant efforts of avoiding these drawbacks by using nanostructures. In this study, we present the CVD growth of SnO branched nanostructures on Cu current collector without any binder, using a combinatorial system of the vapor transport method and resistance heating technique. The growth mechanism of SnO branched nanostructures is introduced. The SnO nanostructures are evaluated as an anode for lithium-ion battery. Remarkably, they exhibited very high discharge capacities, over 520mAh/g and good coulombic efficiency up to 50 cylces.

  • Lithium ion secondary battery has been applied widely to portable devices, and has been studied for application to high power electric cell system such as power tool or hybrid electronic vehicle. The structure change of the electrodes materials occur when lithium ions move between electrodes. Neutron or X-rays can analyze the structure of electrode. The advantage of X-rays is convenient in test. However X-rays is scattered by electron cloud in atoms. Therefore, The elucidation for correct position of lithium is difficult with X-rays because lithium has small atomic weight. Neutron analysis techniques could solve this problem. In this review, We wish to discuss about structure analysis and the principle of structural characterization method using neutron beam source.

  • The performance of lithium ion batteries depends on the usage environment and the combination ratio of cathode materials. In order to develop a high-performance lithium-ion battery, it is necessary to manufacture the battery and measure its performance while varying the cathode material ratio. However, it takes a lot of time and money to directly develop batteries and measure their performance for all combinations of variables. Therefore, research to predict the performance of a battery using an artificial intelligence model has been actively conducted. However, since measurement experiments were conducted with the same battery in the existing published battery data, the cathode material combination ratio was fixed and was not included as a data attribute. In this paper, we define a training data model required to develop an artificial intelligence model that can predict battery performance according to the combination ratio of cathode materials. We analyzed the factors that can affect the performance of lithium-ion batteries and defined the mass of each cathode material and battery usage environment (cycle, current, temperature, time) as input data and the battery power and capacity as target data. In the battery data in different experimental environments, each battery data maintained a unique pattern, and the battery classification model showed that each battery was classified with an error of about 2%.

Preparation and Characterization of Pitch/Cokes Composite Anode Material for High Power Lithium Secondary Battery

  • Petroleum pitch and coke with wet mixture method or with dry mixture method were investigated to develop the composite anodic carbon material of high power lithium ion battery. Cokes coated with pitch were obtained by the heat treatment of mixture of cokes and pitch with different weight ratios at $800{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$. The charge and discharge characteristic of the consequent composite anodic carbon material assembled in batteries was tested. Cokes with wet mixture method have a smooth surface and their capacity changed little with changing temperature and content as compared to the cokes with dry mixture method. Although the reversible capacities showed different values by the anode manufacturing method, the composite anode with the mixture of 20 wt% of petroleum pitch and 80 wt% of coke showed the higher power capability and initial efficiency than the pitch based anode. However, the reversible capacity of the composite anode showed the reduced value as compared with the pitch based anode.

The Benefit-Cost analysis for Korea Lithium-ion Battery Waste Recycling project and promotion plans (국내 중대형 이차전지 재활용 사업의 경제성 분석 및 발전방안 연구)

  • Korea faces major changes in energy policy, which include eco-friendly and zero-nuclear power. On the other hand, there are very few policies for the waste-management of mid- to large-sized lithium-ion batteries, such as electric car batteries and energy storage systems, which are expected to increase explosively due to such energy policy changes. Therefore, this study estimated the amount of mid- to large-sized lithium ion batteries waste and performed economics analysis of a middle and large sized secondary battery recycling project. Based on the results, a policy alternative for the revitalization of the related lithium-ion battery recycling industry is suggested. As a result, the B / C ratio of a domestic mid - to large - sized lithium ion battery recycling project is 1.06, in which the benefit is higher than the cost, so the business is economic feasible. Although the recycling project's economic efficiency is high, the recycling industry has not been activated in Korea because the domestic demand for rechargeable batteries recycling is very low. To solve this problem, this study proposes a plan to activate the industry by adding lithium secondary batteries to the EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) items.

  • Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become popular electrochemical devices. Due to the unique advantages of LIBs in terms of high operating voltage, high energy density, low self-discharge, and absence of memory effects, their application range, which was primarily restricted to portable electronic devices, is now being extended to high-power applications, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electrical vehicles (HEVs). Among various anode materials, $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ (LTO) is believed to be a promising anode material for high-power LIBs due to its advantages of high working potential and outstanding cyclic stability. However, the rate performance of LTO is limited by its intrinsically low electronic conductivity and poor $Li^+$ ion diffusion coefficient. This review highlights the recent progress in improving the rate performance of LTO through doping, compositing, and nanostructuring strategies.

Anode Properties of TiO2 Nanotube for Lithium-Ion Batteries (리튬이온전지용 TiO2 나노튜브 음전극 특성)

  • In this review, the studies on the electrochemical properties of $TiO_2$ nanotube as an anode material of lithium-ion battery, which was prepared by an alkaline hydrothermal reaction and anneling process, were investigated andanalyzed in terms of charge-dischage characteristics. Up to date, a maximum discharge capacity of $338mAh\;g^{-1}$(x=1.01) was achieved by the nanotube with $TiO_2(B)$ phase, whereas the theoretical capacity of $TiO_2$ anode was $335mAh\;g^{-1}$(x=1) in the basis of $Li_xTiO_2$ as a product of electrochemical reaction between $TiO_2$ and lithium. This was due to fast lithium transport by a shortened diffusion path provided by controlling the nanostructure of $TiO_2$, because the self-diffusion of lithium was slow in a basis of its activation energy as 0.48 eV. Due to an excellent ion storage capabilities in both the surface and the bulk phase, the $TiO_2$ nanotube could be a promising active material as both an anode of lithium-ion battery and an electrode of capacitor with high-rate performances.
