Study on the Design of High Efficient Class-E Power Amplifier and Resonant Coils for High Efficient Wireless Power Transfer System (고효율 무선 전력 전송을 위한 고효율 E급 전력 증폭기 및 공진 코일 설계에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, wireless power transmission system is gradually extended to technology in various fields such as lighting field, electric vehicles and smartphones wireless charging system. The largest of the two elements for high transmission efficiency of the wireless power transmission system are resonant coils and power amplifiers. In this paper, in order to build a high efficient wireless power transmission system, we introduce the resonance coil manufacturing method and high efficiency power amplifier design method that operates at 6.78MHz.

Design of an High Efficiency Pallet Power Amplifier Module (S-대역 고효율 Pallet 전력증폭기 모듈 설계)

  • This paper describes the design and fabrication of a high-efficiency GaN HEMT(Gallium Nitride High-electron Mobility Transistor) Pallet power amplifier module for S-band phased array radar applications. Pallet amplifier module has a series 2-cascaded power amplifier and the final amplification-stage consists of balanced GaN HEMT transistor. In order to achieve high efficiency characteristic of pallet power amplifier module, all amplifiers are designed to the switching-mode amplifier. We performed with various PRF(Pulse Repetition Frequency) of 1, 10, 100 and 1000Hz at a fixed pulse width of $100{\mu}s$. In the experimental results, the output power, gain, and drain efficiency(${\eta}_{total}$) of the Pallet power amplifier module are 300W, 33dB, and 51% at saturated output power of 2.9GHz, respectively.

Design and Comparison of Digital Predistorters for High Power Amplifiers (비선형 고전력 증폭기의 디지털 전치 보상기 설계 및 비교)

  • We compare three predistortion methods to prevent signal distortion and spectral re-growth due to the high PAPR (peak-to-average ratio) of OFDM signal and the non-linearity of high-power amplifiers. The three predistortion methods are pth order inverse, indirect learning architecture and look up table. The pth order inverse and indirect learning architecture methods requires less memory and has a fast convergence because these methods use a polynomial model that has a small number of coefficients. Nevertheless the convergence is fast due to the small number of coefficients and the simple computation that excludes manipulation of complex numbers by separate compensation for the magnitude and phase. The look up table method is easy to implement due to simple computation but has the disadvantage that large memory is required. Computer simulation result reveals that indirect learning architecture shows the best performance though the gain is less than 1 dB at $BER\;=\;10^{-4}$ for 64-QAM. The three predistorters are adaptive to the amplifier aging and environmental changes, and can be selected to the requirements for implementation.

Class E Power Amplifiers using High-Q Inductors for Loosely Coupled Wireless Power Transfer System

  • A highly efficient class E power amplifier is demonstrated for application to wireless power transfer system. The amplifier is designed with an L-type matching at the output for harmonic rejection and output matching. The power loss and the effect of each component in the amplifier with the matching circuit are analyzed with the current ratio transmitted to the output load. Inductors with a quality factor of more than 120 are used in a dc feed and the matching circuit to improve transmission efficiency. The single-ended amplifier with 20 V supply voltage shows 7.7 W output power and 90.8% power added efficiency at 6.78 MHz. The wireless power transfer (WPT) system with the amplifier shows 5.4 W transmitted power and 82.3% overall efficiency. The analysis and measurements show that high-Q inductors are required for the amplifier design to realize highly efficient WPT system.

  • A 40 nm complementary metal oxide semiconductor carrier-aggregated drive amplifier with high linearity is presented for sub-GHz Internet of Things applications. The proposed drive amplifier consists of two high linear amplifiers, which are composed of five differential cascode cells. Carrier aggregation can be achieved by switching on both the driver amplifiers simultaneously and combining the two independent signals in the current mode. The common gate bias of the cascode cells is selected to maximize the output 1 dB compression point (P1dB) to support high-linear wideband applications, and is used for the local supply voltage of digital circuitry for gain control. The proposed circuit achieved an output P1dB of 10.7 dBm with over 22.8 dBm of output 3rd-order intercept point up to 0.9 GHz and demonstrated a 55 dBc adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) for the 802.11af with -5 dBm channel power. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the wideband carrier-aggregated drive amplifier that achieves the highest ACLR performance.

  • The paper proposes a new multilevel variable output voltage AC/DC Converter for power supply of power amplifiers used in underwater acoustic sensors. The proposed multilevel variable output voltage AC/DC Converter is composed of two parts. One as the input section is the high efficiency phase-shifted PWM full bridge DC-DC converter to get multiport power sources. The other as the output section is composed of two flying-capacitor 3-level DC-DC converters and a diode bridge circuit to get fast-response and multilevel variable output voltage for an envelope amplifier. Also the paper suggests the detailed circuit topology and design guideline of multilevel variable output voltage AC/DC converter. It also proposes the power balanced control method between 3-level converters and the voltage balanced algorithm for flying capacitors. Its characteristics should be verified by the detailed simulation results. It is anticipated that the proposed converter will be used very well for power amplifiers used in underwater acoustic sensors.

High-beam-quality 2-kW-class Spectrally Combined Laser Using Narrow-linewidth Ytterbium-doped Polarization-maintaining Fiber Amplifiers (협대역 이터븀 첨가 편광유지 광섬유 증폭기를 이용한 고품질 2 kW급 파장제어 빔 결합 레이저)

  • In this paper, we have experimentally demonstrated a 2-kW-class spectrally-beam-combined laser with high beam quality, using narrow-linewidth ytterbium-doped polarization-maintaining fiber amplifiers. Five fiber amplifiers with different center wavelengths were implemented for the spectrally-beam-combined laser. The center wavelengths of the five amplifiers were 1062, 1063, 1064, 1065, and 1066 nm, respectively. A phase-modulated laser diode was used as a seed source for each amplifier. The seed sources were modulated by filtered pseudorandom-bit-sequence (PRBS) signals 5 GHz in linewidth. The polarization-maintaining large-mode-area fiber with a core size of 30 ㎛ was used as a delivery fiber to mitigate the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect. The laser beams from five amplifiers were spectrally combined by a multilayer dielectric diffraction grating. The maximum output power and beam quality M2 of the combined laser were measured to be 2.3 kW and 1.74, respectively.

  • Parametric array transducers are used for highly directional speaker in an air environments. Piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers for parametric array transducers need DC-biased voltage driving signals in order to get high-directional quality-sound features. The existing power amplifier such as class A amplifiers has low efficiency and require large volume heatsinks. To overcome the above-mentioned disadvantages of the conventional amplifier, this paper proposes a new power amplifier system. The proposed power amplifier system ensures high linearity of output characteristic by utilizing the push-pull class B type amplifier. Furthermore, the proposed power amplifier system gets high efficiency because it contains the DC-DC converter-type power supply which can perform energy recovery and envelope tracking function. Also the paper suggests the detailed circuit topology. Its characteristics are verified by the detailed experimental results.

High-power Femtosecond Ti:sapphire Laser at 1 KHz with a Long-cavity Femtosecond Oscillator

  • A chirped-pulse amplification femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser operating at 1 KHz has been developed. The laser system consisted of a long-cavity femtosecond oscillator, a four-pass grating pulse stretcher, two multi-pass amplifiers and a double-pass grating pulse compressor. Thermal lensing at the amplifiers was reduced by cooling Ti:sapphire crystals using Peltier coolers. Gain narrowing and residual phase errors were compensated for by the use of an acousto-optic pulse shaper. The final laser output had an energy per pulse of 2.0 mJ and a pulse duration of 19.5 fs, reaching 0.1 TW at 1 KHz.

High Efficiency V-band Power Combining Modules Using Slotline-to-Microstrip Transition (슬롯라인-마이크로스트립 변환을 이용한 고효율 V-band 전력 결합 모듈)

  • Two high-efficiency and high power power-combing modules were developed using slotline-to-microstrip transition at V-band. Power-combining modules incorporating two MMIC power amplifiers demonstrated combining efficiencies higher than $80\%$(maximum $86\%$) with saturated output power of 22.96 dBm and 22.81 dBm, respectively. The measurement of back-to-back connected combiners demonstrated insertion loss less than 1.2 dB with return loss better than 15 dB around 60 GHz, respectively.
