The effects of duration and time-dependent, high-intensity exercise on hematological properties and inflammation-related parameters in rats were studied. 20, 60, and 120 min of high-intensive exercise were performed daily for 8 weeks. None of the complete blood count (CBC) factors were affected by the exercise, except for the leukocyte concentration which, in the 20 min group, showed an increase of 47% compared to the control, but this was decreased after 60 min by 30% compared to the control. As exercise was performed for 60 min or longer, serum concentrations of $Fe^{++}$, unsaturated iron biding capacity (UIBC), and total iron biding capacity (TIBC) were significantly elevated in comparison to the control, where 20 min of exercise did not show any change. Both levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, and interleukin-10 (IL-10), an anti-inflammatory cytokine in the serum, were elevated in response to the high-intensity exercise, however the rate of IL-6 increase was higher than the rate of exercise intensity increase, thus the offset of inflammation might be suggested. The concentration of nitric oxide (NO) in the serum became high in response to the exercise. Overall, the current observation suggests that inflammation-like responses to high-intensity exercise might be due to high circulation of blood flow and high oxygen requirement, resulting in systemic damages. However, under the current high-intensity exercise conditions, more than 20 min of exercise might not be suggested for health care purposes.
The time-dependent effects of highly intensive exercise on the hematological properties of leukocytes, as well as $CD4^+$ and $CD8^+$ level changes as T-lymphocyte activation subsets and the cell death of lymphocytes in rats were studied in this research. Twenty, 60, and 120 min of highly intensive exercise was performed daily for 8 weeks. Total leukocyte counts in the blood of rats exercising for 20 min were elevated; they then decreased to less than the level of the control group up to 120 min. The patterns of lymphocyte level changes were directly influenced by exercise duration and the extents of alteration were similar to the total leukocytes counts. The levels of $CD4^+$ and $CD8^+$ in the blood of the exercising rats were not statistically different even when the exercise was continued for 120 min; thus, the exercise did not affect T-lymphocyte activation. Early- and late-stage lymphocyte apoptosis was not affected by the length of exercise, except that late-phase apoptosis was slightly increased at 120 min, suggesting that aging processes for lymphocyte apoptosis might be stimulated at that time. As the exercise time became longer, stimulated necrosis of lymphocytes was observed, so damage in lymphocytes and a potential loss of immunity might be presumed. The current observation suggests that long-term, highly intensive exercise might result in a loss of immunity that could be due to the damage of lymphocytes in terms of both their numbers and inflammation-related functions. The results suggest that under highly intensive exercise conditions, more than 20 min of exercise should not be suggested for health care purposes.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the perceptions of teachers and students on the implementation of the intensive course completion system in mathematics courses and to provide suggestions for the improvement of the system. Five high school mathematics teachers and 338 10th graders and 87 11th graders in 2 high schools located in Gyeonggi-do participated in this study. The results of this study indicated that the intensive course completion system is more appropriate to the subjects which require less time allotment or practical exercise than mathematics courses. For better implementation of the intensive course completion system in mathematics courses, first of all, enough time allotment for teaching and learning mathematics should be guaranteed. Otherwise, the system can make students feel more burden of learning due to increase in learning volume of mathematics courses.
To investigate the effects of exercise-training on serum lipids, fat distribution and several parameters of body fatness(percent body fat, skinfolds thickness, body circumference) were assessed in 24 healthy male subjects submitted to an 8-wk high intensive exercise-training. Blood sample was taken twice, per and post exercise-training, Exercise-training took place 5 days a week and daily energy intake and expenditure were observed. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1) Through exercise-training body weight (changes : 1.1$\pm$1.1kg ; p=0.000) and percent body fat (changes : 2.4$\pm$1.3% ; p=0.000) decreased significantly . 2) Suprailiac was the most reduced site by exercise-training among eight site skinfolds. Central skinfolds were changed more by exercise-training than peripheral skinfolds with reduction of 1.7$\pm$1.7mm and 0.2$\pm$1.9mm. Central site circumferences were reduced more by exercise-training than peripheral site circumferences. 3) Total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were not significantly changed by exercise-training while only triglyceride decreased (changes : 20.7$\pm$44.8mg/dl ; p<0.05). Changes in body weight were grately related to changes in total cholesterol. Changes in deep abdominal adipose tissue were related to changes in triglyceride.
High serum cholesterol level is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease(CHD). Nutrition therapy of hypocholesterolemic diets with increased physical activity is the essential step in the treatment of the hypercholesterolemic patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term effect of intensive dietary therapy combined with regular exercise in lowering serum cholesterol level. Seventy three hypercholesterolemic outpatients(mean: 268.0$\pm$24.7mg/dL), aged 34 to 73(mean: 56$\pm$9.8yrs), who visited cardiology OPD of Yonsei Cardiovascular Center from April through October, 1998 were studied. Anthropometric measurements, usual nutrient intake survey using semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire, and daily nutrient intake analysis were performed. The nutrition counseling for the hypocholesterolemic diet and exercise therapy was performed individually. After a 4 week intensive dietary therapy, comparisons of body weight, nutrient intakes, and blood lipid concentrations were evaluated for the hypocholesterolemic effect of intensive diet therapy. After 4 weeks of intensive diet therapy, significant reductions in percent ideal body weight(p<0.01), saturated fat intake(p<0.01), and cholesterol intake(p<0.01) were observed. There were significant reductions in serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels after 4 weeks of therapy by 8.1%(p<0.01) and 9.7%(p<0.01), respectively. Our results showed that intensive dietary therapy was effective in reductions of serum total and LDL-cholesterol levels. The goal for this dietary modification should not be temporary but rather be permanent in eating behavior accompanied by appropriately increased physical activity.
To investigate the effects of exercise-training on fat distribution several indicators of body fatness(percent body fat skinfolds thickness body circumference) were assessed in 128 healthy male subjects submitted to an 8-wk high intensive exercise-training. The subjects(average age=20.3$\pm$1.3 yrs) exercised 5 days/week. Daily energy intake and expenditure wee recorded. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) Through exercise-training lean body mass increased significantly (changes : 0.5$\pm$1.5kg; p=0.000) decreased significantly. 2) Suprailiac was the most reduced site by exercise-training among eight site skinfolds. Central skinfolds were changed more by exercise-training than peripheral skinfolds with reduction of 1.7$\pm$2.1mm and 0.4$\pm$1.8mm respectively. Central site circumferences were reduced more by exercise-training than peripheral site circumferences. 3) As a result of analyzing 12 of the fattest(top 10% of weight) and 12 of the leanest men(bot-tom 10% of weight) it indicated that there was a significant reduction of fat tissue in body composition and skinfolds thickness for the fat group. However there was no significant change for the lean groups. 4) Correlational analysis showed that predicting changes in body fat by infrared(NIR) measurement seemed to be closely associated with changes in body fat by Kim's equation and Katch's equation in young men.

Magnesium ($Mg^{2+}$) is an essential co-factor for over 325 physiological and biochemical processes so that plays a central role of neuronal activity, cardiac excitability, neuromuscular transmission, muscular contraction, vasomotor tone, and blood pressure significantly related to physical performance. However, only limited information on blood ionized $Mg^{2+}$ ($iMg^{2+}$) regarding to physical exercise is available and the data from blood total $Mg^{2+}$ detection are inconsistent. This present study investigated the changes of blood $iMg^{2+}$ correlated with metabolic demands during acute high-intensive exhaustive physical exercise in rats. After exhausted swimming (3-4 hours), blood pH, glucose, $HCO_3{^-}$, oxygen and ionized $Ca^{2+}$ ($iCa^{2+}$) were significantly decreased, whereas lactate, carbon dioxide, $iMg^{2+}$, ionized $Na^+$ and ionized $K^+$ were significantly increased. During the exhausted swimming, the changes in $iMg^{2+}$ showed a significant negative correlation with changes in pH, glucose, $HCO_3^-$ and $iCa^{2+}$, however a significant negative correlation with changes in lactate and anionic gap. It is concluded that the acute high-intensive exhaustive physical exercise could produced hypermagnesemia, an increase in blood $iMg^{2+}$ via stimulation of $iMg^{2+}$ efflux following increase in intracellular $iMg^{2+}$ from muscle induced by metabolic and respiratory acidosis.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of intake of aronia, montmorency, and Prunus mume on 10 km endurance exercise by investigating changes in blood lactate, ammonia, creatine kinase (CK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and eventually to recommend them as ergogenic aids, which are effective for recovering from exercise fatigue and muscle damage. The subjects were divided into a P. mume intake group, an aronia intake group, a montmorency intake group, and a control group. Blood samples were taken from the brachial vein at rest, and at 0, 30 min, and 24 hr after running to measure recovery status. All data were analyzed by a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance using SPSS. The results are summarized as follows: The changes in blood ammonia and LDH concentration following 10 km of running were not significantly different among the groups. However, lactate and CK recovery ratio increased significantly in the aronia and montmorency groups compared to those in the P. mume and control groups. In particular, CK concentration was significantly different in the montmorency group compared to that in the other groups. These results suggest that the effects of aronia and montmorency are associated with improved recovery from muscle fatigue and damage induced by highly intensive exercise, endurance exercise, or overtraining. In particular, montmorency is recommended as an ergogenic aid to inhibit muscle pain resulting from high-intensity endurance exercise.

In order to investigate the changes in growth hormone, testosterone, blood lactate, double product, and pain, this study conducted intensive weight training and circuit weight training with 60% intensity of 1RM for 7 men who had more than 6 months of resistance exercise and then performed Underwater Walking and Underwater Sitting with underwater recovery. Growth hormone was high in all exercise forms and recovery methods in order of after exercise, after recovery, and after stability, and testosterone was high in order of after exercise, after recovery, and stability. Blood lactate was higher in all exercise forms and recovery methods in order of after exercise, after recovery, and after stabilization, and dynamic recovery after concentration resistance exercise was lower than static recovery. Double product was higher in all types of exercise and recovery methods in order of after-exercise, after-recovery, and stability. Muscle pain decreased in the order of exercise, recovery, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours in all exercise forms and recovery methods. In the water environment, dynamic recovery is considered to be more effective in improving muscle fatigue than static recovery.
