  • Use of high-quality basestocks is increasing to produce high-performance lubricants. However, their tribological characteristics have not been understood clearly yet. In this study, a newly developed basestock from a fuel hydrocracker and a poly-alpha-olefin are selected and investigated on the properties of lubricants formulated with them. The Lubricants are prepared by blending the basestocks with typical additives such as a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, a dispersant, a detergent and a dispersant-inhibitor package. Frictional and wear-preventing properties are investigated using an oscillating-type wear-testing machine. The contact is a ball-on-disk mode and the testing temperature is varied from room temperature to 200$^{\circ}$C. The results show that their frictional property is varied significantly and that the non-conventional oils result in lower friction and lower wear compared with conventional lubricants, especially at the higher temperatures.

  • Alloy 713LC was developed to improve the tensile strength and ductility by reducing the carbon content of Alloy 713C. As Alloy 713LC was designed to minimize the mechanical property change with process conditions, it is generally utilized in the parts which have thick and thin sections simultaneously. In the thick and the thin sections, quite different properties are required. Consequently it is essential to crucially control the local mechanical properties of a parts by optimizing the process condition and heat treatment. In this research, high temperature mechanical properties including creep-rupture and strain-control low cycle fatigue were investigated together with the microstructural variations with heat treatment. Failure mechanism was also analyzed by observing the fracture surface to correlate the variation of mechanical properties with the microstructural change.

  • Creep crack growth lift of high temperature pressure equipments was assessed for various crack locations and for various material properties. Surface cracks at the inner and outer surface of the vessel in the axial and circumferential directions were considered. The crack was located in the weld metal, in the parent metal or at the weld interface. Results shored that the crack at the weld interface was the most dangerous one. The crack located outside is weaker than that located inside. Safety factors of the case in which improper material properties were used the to unavailability of the correct material properties were discussed.

  • Recycling of ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) scrap was tried by blending with polypropylene (PP). EPDM scrap powder was prepared by shear pulverization process at high temperature, which may lead to selective chain scission induced by difference in the critical elastic coefficient. On the other hand, EPDM scrap powder was prepared by adding a selected reclaiming agent during shear pulverization process at high temperature. Terpene as a bonding agent was then introduced to improve adhesion property. PP, used as a matrix for manufacturing thermoplastic elastomer, was modified by the incorporation of dicumyl peroxide and maleic anhydride. The functionalized EPDM and modified PP were blended and cured dynamically at $190^{\circ}C$. The blend materials prepared in this study showed the comparable results to those of conventional TPE in terms of tensile and flow properties. Also, the odor component of recycled EPDM was analyzed using GC-MS.

  • Mechanical characteristics of the STS 304 which is heat resistance steel were investigated after artificial aging at $650^{\circ}C$ with 1,000 hours. Tensile test specimens and small test pieces were done artificial aging up to 1,000 hours in the high temperature atmospheric environment. The results present that as the aging time increased, tensile properties were deteriorated. In the case of failure mechanism, the configuration of the fractography presented drastic change from ductile to brittle with aging time. $M_{23}C_6$ carbide leading to the change of the mechanical properties and fracture mode of the aged STS 304 steel continuously precipitated along the grain boundaries of austenite microstructure.

  • Experiment on isomorphous substitution of Al by Fe in sodalite framework was carried out using dry way method at 800-900$^{\circ}$C in nitrogen atmosphere. The substitution of Fe was possible up to 25 mole% with some deviation of symmetry in sodalite cage. The cubic unit cell parameter increased with increasing Fe content. It showed ionic semiconducting property, especially the highest conductivity and the lowest activation energy in 10 mole% Fe-substituted sodalite which could behave as a superionic conductor at above 400$^{\circ}$C. When more Fe was introduced into sodalite the electronic conductivity was improved at high temperature. But the relative electronic contribution was found to be lower compared with ionic contribution at high temperature. In infrared spectra some major absorption bands of sodalite shifted to lower wave numbers due to heavier Fe atoms substitution in Al lattice sites.

  • This study proposes a novel rotary direct evaporative cooler and investigates the potential of a moisture-wicking fabric as a cooling pad for the proposed evaporative cooler. The rotary direct evaporative cooler rotates the cooling pad to reduce the water and energy consumption of the pump compared to those of existing direct evaporative coolers. A moisture-wicking fabric is considered as the material of the cooling pad, because of its high moisture-wicking property, enhancing water evaporation. Experiments are performed under various inlet air conditions while measuring the air temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, and differential pressure. The evaporative cooling efficiency and impacts of the inlet air temperature and air velocity on the cooling performance are also evaluated. The results demonstrate the potential of the moisture-wicking fabric as cooling pad of direct evaporative cooler.

  • The electrical property of MMC is essentially important to some applications such as power transmission lines and cables, electronic and electrical components as well as electromagnetic shielding equipments. The behavior of electrical resistivity of $SiC_{w}/Al$ alloy composites under as-extruded and annealed conditions has been investigated within the temperature range from room temperature to $450^{\circ}C$. It can be seen that within entire temperature range, the electrical resistivity of composites was higher than that of an unreinforced matrix alloy under the same condition of either as-extrusion or annealing. The temperature dependence of both exhibited positive incline like a typical metal. The variation of electrical resistivity of an unreinforced matrix alloy with temperature from ambient temperature to $450^{\circ}C$ was nearly monotonous, while those of composites increased monotonously at low temperature and rose to a high level after about $250^{\circ}C or 275^{\circ}C$. The difference of these temperature dependences on electrical resistivity can be interpreted as qualitatively the interfaces of $SiC_{w}$ fibers and matrix, where act as nucleation sites.

  • In this paper, glass surface-mat reinforced epoxy(G.S.R.E.) is developed, It is assured that the material(G.S.R.E.) can be used as photoelastic model material and it satisfy with the required properties of photoelastic model material. Therefore, the material can be used as model material of transparent photoelastic experiment when we analyze the stress distributions of transversely isotropic material by photoelastic experiment. When we use G.S.R.E. as photoelastic experiment model material, we had better use the G.S.R.E. which fiber volume ratio is less than 0.7% in the high temperature(stress freezing method) and than 1.74% in the room temperature. Relationships between stress fringe value and elastic modulus in transversely isotropic material are developed in this paper, it is assured by experiment that they are established in the room temperature or in the high temperature. Therefore we can obtain stress fringe value or elastic modulus from the relationships between stress fringe value and elastic modulus.

  • This paper presents a new efficient approach to estimate the S-N type fatigue life assessment curve for S550 high strength steels under low-cycle actions at -60℃. The proposed approach combines a single set of monotonic tension test and one set of fatigue tests to determine the key material damage parameters in the continuum damage mechanics framework. The experimental program in this study examines both the material response under low-cycle actions. The microstructural mechanisms revealed by the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) at the low temperature, furthermore, characterizes the effect due to different strain ratios and low temperature on the low-cycle fatigue life of S550 steels. Anchored on the experimental results, this study validates the S-N curve determined from the proposed approach. The S-N type curve determined from one set of fatigue tests and one set of monotonic tension tests estimates the fatigue life of all specimens under different strain ratios satisfactorily.
