  • Each commercial cyromazine insecticide has different HPLC conditions. The aim of this study was to establish a standardized chromatographic method for the determination of cyromazine in commercial insecticides. The separation was achieved on two C18 columns - Waters® Bondapak C (4×300 nm i.d., 10 ㎛) and X bridge (4.6×250 nm i.d., 5 ㎛) using a mobile phase composed of water/methanol/ethanolamine (76:24:0.1, v/v), with UV detection at wavelengths 230 nm and 254 nm. A total of six commercial cyromazine insecticides were analyzed. In this study, the optimal high-performance liquid chromatography conditions for the analysis of cyromazine were as follows: a mobile phase of water/methanol/ethanolamine (76:24:0.1, v/v) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min and a detection wavelength of 230 nm using a X bridge C18 column (4.6×250 nm i.d., 5 ㎛) at a column temperature of 25℃. The calibration curve was linear in the concentration range of 5~50 ㎍/mL, with a correlation coefficient of 0.99995. The cyromazine detection limit was 0.2 ㎍/mL, and the limit of quantification was 0.59 ㎍/mL. The percentage recovery ranged from 99.8% to 101.0% for cyromazine, and the relative standard deviation was not over 2.0%. The cyromazine concentration ranged from 92.7% to 109.4% and was within the acceptable range (90~120%) for the percent of the labeled amount. This method was found to be suitable for determining cyromazine in commercial insecticides.

  • This study was conducted to improve the operating conditions of an adsorption tower filled with potassium impregnated activated carbon for high hydrogen sulfide capture capacity. Heat treatment modified the surface properties of activated carbon, and ultimately determined its adsorption capacity. The activated carbon doped with potassium showed 57 times more adsorption at room temperature than that of using the raw adsorbent. It is believed that uniform pore formation and strong bonding of the potassium on the surface of carbon contributed to the chemical and physical absorption of hydrogen sulfide. The SEM analysis on the surface structure of various commercial carbons showed that the modification of surface properties through the heat treatment generated the destruction of pore structures resulted in the decrease of the absorption performance. The pressure drop across the activated carbon bed was closely related with the grain size and shape. The optimum size of irregularly shaped activated carbon granules was 2~4 mesh indicating economical feasibility.

  • In this study, slender reinforced concrete columns subjected to high temperatures and eccentric axial loads are evaluated by finite element analysis employing Abaqus (a finite element analysis program). Subsequently, the analysis results are compared and assessed. The sequentially coupled thermal stress analysis provided by Abaqus was employed to reflect the condition of an axially loaded column exposed to fire. First, heat transfer analysis was performed on the column cross-section. After verifying the results, another analysis was conducted: the cross-section was transformed into a three-dimensional element and then structural analyzed. In the analysis process, the column was modeled by accounting for the effects of tension stiffening and initial imperfection that could affect convergence and accuracy. The analysis results were compared with 74 experimental records, and an average error of 6% was observed based on the fire exposure and resistance. The foregoing indicates that the fire resistance performance of reinforced concrete columns can be predicted through finite element analysis.

  • This study was aimed at designing a condenser, as a component of the organic Rankine cycle system for ships. The condenser was manufactured through press molding to achieve a bent shape to enhance the heat transfer performance, considering the shape of the heat transfer plate used in a brazing plate heat exchanger. The heat transfer plate was made of copper-nickel alloy. The required heat transfer rate for the condenser was 110 kW, and the maximum number of layers was set as 25, considering the characteristics of high-temperature brazing. Computational fluid dynamics techniques were used to perform the thermal fluid analysis, based on the ANSYS CFX (v.18.1) commercial program. The heat transfer rate of the condenser was 4.96 kW for one layer (width and length of 0.224 and 0.7 m, respectively) of the heat transfer exchanger. The fin efficiency pertaining to the heat transfer plate was approximately 20%. The heat flow analysis for one layer of the heat exchanger plate indicated that the condenser with 25 layers of heat transfer plates could achieve a heat transfer rate of 110 kW.

  • In this study, we investigated the applicability and optimal operating strategy of a closed-loop pressure retarded membrane distillation (PRMD) for brackish water desalination. For effective operation with net power generation, high temperature of heat source over 90 ℃ and feed flow rate at 0.6 kg/s are recommended. At 3 g/L of feed concentration, the average permeate flux and net energy density showed 8.04 kg/m2/hr and 2.56 W/m2, respectively. The average permeate flux and net energy density were almost constant in the range of feed concentration from 1 to 3 g/L. Compared to the case with seawater feed, the PRMD with brackish water feed showed higher average permeate flux and net energy density. Thus, PRMD application using brackish water feed can be more effective than that using seawater feed in terms of power generation.

  • We report, synthesis of high surface area composite carbon aerogel using additive based polymerization technique by incorporating graphitic porous carbon as additive. This additive was separately prepared using sol-gel polymerization of resorcinol-furfuraldehyde in iso-propyl alcohol medium at much above the routine gelation temperature to yield porous carbon (CA-IPA) having graphitic layered morphology. CA-IPA exhibited a unique combination of meso-pore dominated surface area (~ 700 m2/g) and good conductivity of ~ 300 S/m. The composite carbon aerogel (CCA) was synthesized by traditional aqueous medium based resorcinol-formaldehyde gelation with CA-IPA as additive. The presence of CA-IPA favored enhanced meso-porosity as well as contributed to improvement in bulk conductivity. Based on the surface area characteristics, CCA-8 composition having 8% additive was found to be optimum. It showed specific surface area of ~ 2056 m2/g, mesopore area of 827 m2/g and electrical conductivity of 180 S/m. The electrode formed with CCA-8 showed improved electrochemical behavior, with specific capacitance of 148 F/g & ESR < 1 Ω, making it a better choice as super capacitor for energy storage applications.

  • As the COVID-19 pandemic situation worsens, the time spent indoors increases, and the exposure to indoor environmental pollution such as indoor air pollution and noise also increases, causing problems such as deterioration of human health, stress, and discord between neighbors. This paper designs and implements a system that measures and monitors indoor air quality and noise, which are representative evaluation criteria of the indoor environment. The system proposed in this paper consists of a particulate matter measurement subsystem that measures and corrects the concentration of particulate matters to monitor indoor air quality, and a noise measurement subsystem that detects changes in sound and converts it to a sound pressure level. The concentration of indoor particulate matters is measured using a laser-based light scattering method, and an error caused by temperature and humidity is compensated in this paper. For indoor noise measurement, the voltage measured through a microphone is basically measured, Fourier transform is performed to classify it by frequency, and then A-weighting is performed to correct loudness equality. Then, the RMS value is obtained, high-frequency noise is removed by performing time-weighting, and then SPL is obtained. Finally, the equivalent noise level for 1 minute and 5 minutes are calculated to show the indoor noise level. In order to classify noise into direct impact sound and air transmission noise, a piezo vibration sensors is mounted to determine the presence or absence of direct impact transmitted through the wall. For performance evaluation, the error of particulate matter measurement is analyzed through TSI's AM510 instrument. and compare the noise error with CEM's noise measurement system.

  • Molybdenum is used in electrical contacts, industrial motors, and transportation materials due to its remarkable ability to resist heat and corrosion. It is also used to flame coat other metals. This study investigated, the thermal characteristics of the molybdenum sputtered material, such as electrical conductivity, and stealth effects on infrared thermal imaging cameras. To this end, molybdenum sputtered samples were prepared by varying the density of the base sample and the type of base materials used. Thereafter, the produced samples were evaluated for their surface state, electrical conductivity, electromagnetic field characteristics, thermal characteristics, stealth effect on infrared thermal imaging cameras, and moisture characteristics. As a result of infrared thermal imaging, the molybdenum layer was directed towards the outside air, and when the sample was a film, it demonstrated a greater stealth effect than the fabric. When the molybdenum layer was directed to the outside air, all of the molybdenum sputtering-treated samples exhibited a lower surface temperature than the "untreated sample." In addition, as a result of confirming electrical properties following the molybdenum sputtering treatment, it was determined that the film exhibited better electrical conductivity than the fabric. All samples that were subjected to molybdenum sputtering exhibited significantly reduced electromagnetic and IR transmission. As a result, the stealth effect on infrared thermal imaging cameras is considered to be a better way of interpreting heat transfer than infrared transmission. These results are expected to have future applications in high-performance smartwear, military uniforms, and medical wear.

  • Polycarbosilane(PCS) is an important precursor for melt-spinning the silicon carbide(SiC) fibers and manufacturing ceramics. The PCS is a metal-organic polymer precursor capable of producing continuous SiC fibers having excellent performance such as high-temperature resistance and oxidation resistance. The SiC fibers are manufactured through melt-spinning, stabilization, and heat treatment processes using the PCS manufactured by synthesis, purification, and control of the molecular structure. In this paper, we analyzed the effect of purification of unreacted substances and low molecular weight through solvent treatment of PCS and the effect of heat treatment at various temperatures change the polymerization and network rearrangement of PCS. Especially, we investigated the complex viscosity and structural arrangement of PCS precursors according to solvent treatment and heat treatment through the rheological properties.

  • This paper introduces the effect of grease on the degradation characteristics of bearings used as key components of packaging equipment and automation systems. Bearings parts are installed to fix and support the rotating body of the system, and performance degradation of the bearings has a great effect on the life of the system too. When bearings are used in various devices and systems, the grease is applied to reduce friction and improve fatigue life. Determining the type of lubricant (grease) is important because it has a great influence on the operating environment and lifespan and ensures long lifespan of systems and facilities. However, studies that simultaneously compared and analyzed the change in mechanical degradation characteristics and the comparison of chemical degradation characteristics according to grease types under actual operating conditions are insufficient. In this paper, three types of small harmonic drive, high-load reducer, and low-load reducer grease used in power transmission joint modules are experimentally selected and finally injected into ball bearings with a load (19,500N) to improve bearing durability. Degradation characteristics were tested by attaching to test equipment. At this time, after the durability test under the same load conditions, the mechanical degradation characteristics, that is temperature, vibration according to the three greases types. In addition, the chemical degradation characteristics of the corresponding grease was compared to present the results of mutual correlation analysis.
